As someone who believes in Bret Hart's scale for pro wrestlers being look, mic work, and working, I have always thought Cole's look has held him back a bit.
That said, dude scores so high in the other two that it matters a whole lot less. Like I would give him a 2 for look and 9s for mic work and working, and a 20 level wrestler is damn great.

Held him back from what, exactly? Because the dude has been over as hell and has been a solid upper midcard to main event talent in every company he's been in, including WWE if we're counting NXT as a brand.

Cosmetics are and always have been a big part of wrestling, but I think people just get it twisted and reduce it down to 'big muscles = star'. You don't have to look like a jacked bodybuilder or a supermodel to have a good look. It's about whether it fits your presentation, your character, how you wrestle, etc. I wouldn't say Adam Cole has a *great* look but it doesn't stick out as an issue to me because he doesn't wrestle like a powerhouse or a monster, he's not presented like some insane physical force like a Brock Lesnar or a Scott Steiner. He wrestles in a way that fits his general look and presentation. If Adam Cole was out there one-handed chokeslamming Satnam Singh or whatever, I'd probably have more criticisms about his look. Actually I'd find it hilariously entertaining, but you know what I mean. The Hurricane, Adam Cole has a ring to it.

You are never going to escape this thought on wrestling, most of these guys talking wanted to be wrestlers in the 80s or started watching then so their idea of wrestling is Hulk Hogan, Warrior...where even little dudes were huge compared to a normal person.

For me it's like I can't quite picture him in a Wrestlemania main event say. Many said the same about Bryan Danielson around the mid-2000s though he did seem to tone up on his way to WWE and once there. I don't think most of the people critiquing expect everyone to be muscle bound steroid freaks either, they just prefer their wrestlers to have a more athletic look which helps them suspend their disbelief.

I think it's more that he doesn't "look" quite as good as he did at his peak in NXT.
But in the end, it's his choice, and if he's happier not having to be as much of a gym rat, more power to him.
It's hard to put in your best work if you don't like who you are.
