Taylor Swift didn't sell out...SHE BOUGHT IN!
Or
Taylor Swift sold out all right...she sold out the Garden, she sold out the Forum, she sold out the Coliseum.

I like her stuff just fine, but I get why others don't.
As for her being "inauthentic" and her rabid/annoying fanbase, there's a short list of mega stars that don't have the exact same knocks. I'd argue Beyonce for example, is far far worse, especially when it comes to the latter

So, I'll shoot you all straight. I see her in two lights. One is people is thinking she's the greatest musician who ever lived and guys who say shit like they can't stop jerking off to her, no matter how hard they try. And my response to both of those feelings is, "Eh". She's fine. She writes her own music and she's pretty, but...eh. That's at least a million women. why are you making so many f***ing posts about this

She probably has such a huge fanbase because she first hit when she was like 16 and all of the young girls/kids could identify with her simplistic songs and/or thought that she was hot. Throw in the Nashville marketing machine and there you go. No idea why she’s SO huge now to the point of those ridiculous ticket prices but I’d imagine that a lot of her fans from when she started are now parents as well and they turned their kids on to her music as being at least part of it. The Nashville marketing machine is just like pro wrestling if you’re an attractive person with a decent “gimmick” they’ll push you ever harder until you stop making money.
As for the songs about her exes, while I haven’t heard them all, they are all super simple lyrically and targeted towards young people. Nothing that I’ve heard is high art like some of Bob Dylan’s break up songs, or even something like “You’re So Vain” by Carly Simon and that’s part of the reason people poke fun at them. Combine that with the internet and people knowing who everyone is dating as if anyone should really be so invested in things and it becomes a monster.

This is the explain it like I'm 5 portion of FAN Explain this woman to me. Her appeal in any manner. People are f***ing obsessed with her and in a frightening way. You could throw a rock in a crowd and hit a chick who is at least as attractive and can play guitar half-assed. Did she just come in the right time? Cause she seems to me, if she were my age, she'd be mid-bill at Lilth Fair and long since forgotten, like everyone who played Lilth Fair. Even as a decidedly not poptimist guy, Taylor is genuinely quite talented and writes very catchy music that speaks to a lot of people, even if I'm not one of them.

From what I was told by someone who is a genuine fan, it's because her songs are so simple and nonthreatening she's able to listened to by all ages e.g safe for children.

Taylor has been really savvy with her promotion. She (or more likely her team on her behalf) would reach out to fans by liking Tumblr posts, commenting on social media posts, and creating a really close relationship. She invited fans to secret sessions to listen to her albums pre-release with her. She drops hints and clues in her album notes and interviews that encourages her fans to dig into her songs and figure out who they're about.
It's not just writing songs about exes. She encourages her fans to speculate about her famous exes and which song is about which. It's gossip on a ridiculously public level with a slice of parasocial relationships on the side.
Thats why it gets more attention. She's the most popular female singer in the world, she's written songs about Harry Styles, she treats fans like they're her friends, and she encourages people to decipher her lyrics.

It's a dated joke I thankfully see less of these days, since yeah, writing songs about exes isn't remotely unique, and isn't even most of her singles, or even most of her top hits. She seems like one of the most inauthentic, manufactured things since the 2000's. Something isn't right with that woman. I thought she was a really good country artist when she started and I don't like country at all. Obviously, the money and stardom was not in that so here we are. Of course, she's wiping her tears with hundred dollar bills after reading this... so really, my opinion is as useless as basketball cleats (yyyeeeeahhhh!!). Edit: I don't hate her at all. I'm probably indifferent, but I do remember her having some catchy songs back in the early 2010s. My daughter (I think she was like 4) couldn't go an hour or so without me play Shake It Off and her doing her little dances.

There are Britney Spears fans still making hate videos toward Christina Aguilera.

They'd rather piss their pants than miss anything. My only response to this... for God's sake Taylor, put in an intermission. Too many pissy pants people dancing to your music.

I'm always fascinated by insane fan bases. I'm sure they existed before social media, but I have never seen the amount of deification of someone who sings a song you like as they do today.
Like literally, the person is perfection and you take it upon yourself to destroy the heretics who say anything that doesn't portray them as amazing.
I'd love to know the psychology behind that.

Somebody who just comes off as plain unlikable with how they play the victim card and with a chip on their shoulder. Which, I think, has contributed to her massive cult like following. Lot of people relate. FWIW, I dig a lot of her songs. “I knew you were trouble”, “bad blood”, etc. some catchy shit. I really like 1989. Her last album was getting hyped to high heaven and besides like one song, wasn’t feeling it.

The thing that really bugged me with Swift (actually no fault of her own) was when she broke out and the sheer amount of 40+ year old dudes I worked with that talked about wanting to bang her every time she came on the radio at work.
That was some sick ass shit.

That was some sick ass shit. In the past, there have been countdown clocks to when people like the Olsen twins and Lindsey Lohan turned 18. The lesson is: people are f***ing gross
