Side rant: he joined the NWO as the “head of security.” Id he ever actually prevent anyone from attacking DiBiase in the 80’s WWF? It was more like Ted shoved Virgil at them and then ran away. Then he would get destroyed. Some head of security. LOL!

Maybe he could've been repackaged shortly after the storyline ended, but instead he was just . . . Virgil. That's not true. He was repackaged as a peppermint.

In my opinion I feel he was not over but the storyline was It could of been anyone in that role against Dibiase. Plus Once you take the Dibiase and even Piper element away, you take just have a guy with below average skills at best and who can't cut a promo

I was so beyond hyped for him standing up to Dibiase. It was awesome and one of those specific moments that I clearly remember after all these years.
But as others have said, where do you go from there? He wasn't good in the ring, he wasn't charismatic, he basically looked cool standing there stone faced with a fan of cash. The Dibiase split was a great story, but there wasn't really anywhere for him to go after that.

In all seriousness, Wright I could see in the bodyguard role; he’s a huge guy, in his prime he was solid as a rock, and he’s covered in tattoos, sans the godfather gimmick he could look like a menacing guy. The kind a cowardly heel has stand behind him and look scary during promos. But instead, Virgil.

He was too small, no charisma.
Still awesome in his role, though.
Also, Virgilina was the best thing he ever did

Then he would get destroyed. Some head of security. LOL! When you think about it Mike Jones wasn't a good casting choice for Virgil in that while super jacked with big arms he was simply too small with all the huge beasts that were occupying the WWF roster at the time. He was a good bit smaller then most of the faces Dibiase was facing as well as Dibiase himself the guy he was supposed to be protecting. I think the character was originally intended to be more of a physical threat but then it seemed like they had to switch it to him being more of a stooge/pest type guy who get's beat up all the time with him trying to run away and getting thrown to the wolves by Dibiase. Which defeats the whole purpose of the character of him being a bodyguard as his job is to protect Ted. Why is he trying to run away? If they had put some huge guy in the role it would've worked better and also played into the eventual turn better as well as people could speculate what Ted had over him for him to take the abuse when he could break him in half.

Same reason that Alex Riley fell off the face of the earth after the Miz feud, Cena bagged his girlfriend.

He went on the shelf with foot poisoning after sampling a bad batch of meat sauce I hate when poisoning targets my feet. It's one of the worst kinds of poisonings you can have

Virgil had charisma, it may not have been the kind of charisma that makes you want to strap a rocket to the guy, but he was a perfectly servicable lowercard face who did okay with the comedy stuff WCW handed him during his run there. I think his biggest problem was the early 90s WWF wasn't a great place to be a lowercard face, you weren't really going to get a bunch of TV time to do anything interesting unless you'd just debuted, you weren't getting a sniff of a title and the roster churn was continual so he got lost in the shuffle, just existing to fill time at house shows or on Wrestling Challenge.

Virgil despite being incredibly over, wasn't exactly the biggest guy. And for a guy who wasn't very big, he wasn't otherwise unique in the ring. Maybe if he was able to reinvent himself in a new way, it could have worked, but I don't think he could have sustained a strong push. Incredibly over, even during his feud with Ted Dibiase is a HUGE overstatement. The reason why he was getting pops was because Ted Dibiase was a heat machine, and as mentioned in this thread, it was a culmination of him finally standing up to Dibiase after all those years of abuse. Piper's endorsement also helped. Now, as far as what to do with Virgil after the Dibiase feud is over, someone suggested that they could've had him in an underdog role. Have him get some wins over lowercard name talent, while putting up a good fight against monsters(such as Sid), only to come up short, that way he dosen't look like a total scrub that he became. It might've not worked, but it would've been better than how he was used IRL.

Imagine Virgil wearing a cowboy hat, calling himself Curly Bill and getting a world title run.

During this they should have brought back his bodyguard gimmick and had him as Sid's bodyguard.
