Does anyone know why Virgil push quickly ended after the feud with Ted DiBiase?

Virgil despite being incredibly over, wasn't exactly the biggest guy. And for a guy who wasn't very big, he wasn't otherwise unique in the ring.
Maybe if he was able to reinvent himself in a new way, it could have worked, but I don't think he could have sustained a strong push.

Virgil was only worth pushing relevant to that particular storyline. Beyond seeing DiBiase abuse him to the degree that fans were invested in him getting comeuppance, Virgil had nothing to offer as an in-ring performer. He couldn't talk. His wrestling was atrocious. He had nothing going in the charisma department. It's pretty remarkable that he was as prominent as he was, for as long as he was, despite being pretty much a zero. Sorry Virgil.

As I said in a thread about the so-Virgil couldn’t have been cool if he’d been a refrigerator salesman in the arctic

All I can think of when I think of Virgil is Roddy Piper at World War 3 1996 - "I taught you how to fight!"

Yeah, after the Dibiase feud ended, they couldnt really come up with anything for him. The closest thing he had to a "gimmick" was the whole boxing thing he did, and since there were no wrestlers where a feud involving that would make sense, they pretty much phased him out.

Because he served no function outside of DiBiase. Once he turned on MDM, he got the pop he deserved and sustained that through the feud. So when it was done, that's that then.
It's why I never gave a shit about Kane. Once the Taker feud was done, by Mania 15ish, I stopped caring. Credit to him, he pulled a lengthy career out of it.
Virgil didn't have what Kane had to move onto the next thing, and while I didn't see it in Kane, people did and that's really all that counts.

Because once you take away his association with Ted Dibiase he was average in the ring and had no other gimmick. Then he lost most of his matches to every other heel under the sun.

He had one more moment in the Sun where he challenged Bret for the WWF title on an episode of Superstars. Bret managed to get a pretty decent, albeit short match out of him.
Other than that? He was ass by every possible metric

Once the DiBiase feud was over, he had no real identity of his own and fans weren't given much of a reason to care about him.
Maybe he could've been repackaged shortly after the storyline ended, but instead he was just . . . Virgil.

His entrance music ruled though. I'll say that much.

Side rant: he joined the NWO as the “head of security.” Id he ever actually prevent anyone from attacking DiBiase in the 80’s WWF? It was more like Ted shoved Virgil at them and then ran away.

All of the above.
The striped tights did him no favours either. He at least looked somewhat legit with his Summerslam '91 look.
