Another new year is upon us, and that means a new thread keeping track of games we beat in the year.

Let's see if I can actually get double digits this time.

I specifically wanted to break 100 for 2023, which turned into trying to do 122 (equivalent to one every three days) when I did that well ahead of schedule, so this year I'm definitely scaling it back. There's a lot of stuff I kind of wanted to put more time into that was hard to fit around that I'll probably try and get to for 2024, probably make it a lot more of a visual novel and RPG year.

I don't drink and I don't like to socialise that much (I do enough of that at work), so I celebrated the New Year with my usual run-through of Helltaker.

Already beaten my first game. Doctor Who and the Lonely Assasins. Short little puzzle adventure. Picked it up on the Nintendo eshop sales. Pretty fun little game and a nice sequel to the Blink episode.
Brought an Xbox Series S over the holidays and have purchased a few games already that just need downloading. Looking forward to getting into it once the holiday period is over and i can get some me time

1: Undertale
Finished a playthrough me and my girlfriend had been chipping away at for awhile. It was fun because she wanted to stream it and some random dude showed up in the comments RP’ing as Sans. Always a great game, that home-stretch is magical. Pacifist run, of course. I can’t bring myself to the other one.

And we start the year with...
1. Plants vs. Zombies
I'd never played this and only downloaded it on Gamepass to get achievements for the TrueAchievements Christmas challenge. I ended up liking it enough to try for all the achievements and mess around with the mini games.

1. Super Mario 64
I've played this game way too many times over the years - looking at my files between NSO and 3D All-Stars I've beaten it on the Switch alone six times in the past three years and three months since they put the game on the Switch, and I've beaten it in other formats in that time as well - but it's just a game I find really easy to just pick up and play and can reliably 100% in a few hours at this point.

2. Super Mario Bros.
Kind of speaks for itself, was playing the All-Stars version. Always a really fun way to kill some time, even if the game does kind of show its age in how wonky the physics can be.

Game 1: Sonic The Hedgehog 1 (via Sonic Origins Plus on Switch)
Fun game. Was an easy play session, with only one special stage tripping me up, though The final climb before getting to Final Zone really was annoying, whet I lost most of my lives.
However, I'm excited to move into Sonic 2 and Sonic CD.

3. Super Mario RPG (2023)
Yeah, I've been still in the mood so kind of wanted to replay it already, ended up bumrushing through it over the past couple days; final playtime was only like 8 and a half hours and it probably could've been a lot less if I weren't filling out the Thought Peek logs again. Kind of mixed it up this time by beating Culex soon as I got to Monstro Town instead of waiting for after Barrel Volcano like I typically do, and also used the original soundtrack this time while first time through I used the new one.
Either way, love this remake. Do think it is too easy, the original is a baby game already but this one it's not hard to just completely blitz through every single boss to the point it's kind of hard to keep some of them alive long enough to get all their Thought Peeks (and indeed I didn't get the chance to get Smithy's default or ? Block heads) but it's still a lot of fun and some of the quality of life improvements are quite nice. Not really feeling up to the boss rematches right now but those are at least a more even challenge.

1. Save Room
A decently entertaining RE4 inventory game that's well worth the $2 I paid for it. Though I didn't care for how the later level just become about poisoning yourself to heal or combining gun powders to make bullets which was never an aspect of RE4's inventory, and even ignoring that the last third of the game focuses too much on both which gets old.

I'm doing a streamed challenge where I have to beat 100 games in 365 days, which I started on January 4th. I'm two games down with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers. I got lucky with SOTN when a Crissaegrim dropped after killing a Schmoo. The best weapon in the game and it dropped. I'll add more to this list in the future. The plan is to do a few games off of all the mini consoles. Next up would be from the NES Classic.

1. Street Smart
I got the "SNK 40th Anniversary Collection" for Christmas and I put on this game. I recall having seen a Sega Genesis cartridge for this game at a small business many years ago, but I didn't buy it. However, I played the arcade version, and though I beat the game, I didn't do it without continues. Of course, the whole point of arcade games is to see how many quarters a consumer could punch it to continue playing. It's not a long game, but it's not easy, especially with the controls being kind off. If I played this in the arcade, I likely would have spent a lot of money on it.
2. Def Jam Fight for NY
I was in the mood to play this recently, especially with my last playthrough being back in April. It is still one of my all-time favorite fighting/wrestling games, even after about two decades.

4. Super Mario World
Kind of just been playing it on and off as a buffer for when I'm not in the mood for the replay I've been doing of Xenoblade 2. Always a lot of fun, not a lot to say about it.

Earlier in the week I did runs of Metroid on the NES deathless and Super C on the NES without getting a game over. I plan on streaming more games on Twitch in the future.

1. Game Dev Tycoon. It's a fun time sink in its way, but it does kind of have certain issues of luck, like whether or not you end up with decent Topics to make games out of, and that it's kind of limited by how the game console releases just sort of mirror real life. It'd be nice if you had a way to change the course of history, but you really don't. I think like the only thing that really differs that much is that the Ouya-equivalent comes too late to be killed off and has any market share to speak of, even if it's not a whole lot, so you can release successful games on it if you want to.
That's another thing, I guess: So much of your success kind of rides on if you're already big and doing well. If you're got 10s of millions of dollars, whether or not your next game does well barely even matters because you can easily take the hit and try again, versus how much of the early game keeps you on the razor's edge. It is nice to not have to work for publishers past a certain point, at least, and their bizarre game requests.

1 Signalis A survival horror game with a sci fi setting. Lots of puzzles and key collecting while avoiding zombie replicas getting you. (of course you could use up your ammo). Not a bad game but think i need to hit Wikipedia and make sense of the story. x.com/X_Burnside_X/status/1745519370934346147?s=20
