16. 31
A Rob Zombie movie about a group of people who are kidnapped and fight to stay alive against an assortment of murderous psychopaths. It is a standard Zombie movie. Violence, gore, and nudity. The twist in this one is the appearance of Malcolm McDowell who hams it up like no other.

26. When Harry Met Sally Been copied so much, I tried to get into the mindset of this as the first of it's kind and I can see why it was so game changing. Attitudes have changed making things come off a bit worse, but really, they should NOT have gotten together at the end, seemed like that was the whole point then boom, felt so tacked on. Billy Crystal was really funny but that character was pretty unlikeable, so I just wanted better for Meg Ryan.
27. Road House 1989 Well, this is about what I expected, fairly generic, cool seeing Terry Funk... WHAT THE f*** DID HE DO TO THAT GUY'S THROAT!

There are some great ideas in here but I think the execution was off. The ambiguity really kind of goes nowhere and this drags. [**½]

132. Firewalker (1986) - had been on my to watch pile for a while but Louis Gossett Jr. sudden pasisng had it jump the queue, fun b-level movie where he as enjoyable chemistry with Chuck Norris. 133. Scream VI (2023) - actually enjoyed this more on a second watch, intrigued where the franchise is going after this after external goings on.

55. Bray Wyatt: Becoming Immortal - Watched this on Peacock. My friend wanted to watch this because he is doing a review on it. He doesn't have Peacock, so he came over for it. I decided to watch this myself, too.
The first I have to say is that I knew that it would get emotional, but I did not think it would hit me that hard. While it was great to see various aspects of Windham Rotunda's life, from his childhood to playing football and to getting into the wrestling business, it was also great to see various people getting interviewed. It was a given that the likes of Bo Dallas, JoJo, Mike Rotunda, and the rest of their family would get interviewed, but I liked how various wrestlers were interviewed. It was interesting to see Barry Windham in it, too, being that he was Bray's uncle.
It was also interesting to see some archived footage that was never used from Bray's time as Husky Harris, and then we got to see how the Bray Wyatt character was born. However, when it got to the parts of his untimely death, my eyes were not dry during those parts. I felt for JoJo, Bo Dallas, Mike Rotunda, Stephanie Rotunda, Samantha Pixley (Bray's ex-wife), and Mika Rotunda. However, I felt sad when I saw Braun Strowman get emotional. The same with Alexa Bliss.
It was a very emotional documentary, but it was also good to see also the other aspects of Bray Wyatt's life and career.

What with being away on vacation and then recovering from jetlag, I've not had much time to keep on my New Release reviews, so here's a condensed version of the last few.
2024 New Releases
#13 Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
I had a great time watching this movie! Though I feel my enjoyment was massively boosted by the fact I was watching it in a 4DX screening. Once I remove all the excitement of being thrown about in a rollercoaster-like chair with water and smoke spraying everywhere, my memories of the actual movie aren't as generous. I enjoyed the previous Ghostbusters: Afterlife enough to make me interested in seeing a second entry. Having now seen a second entry, I'm less likely to check out a potential third. One of my main issues with the film is that there are SO many characters. You could have easily dropped Finn Wolfhard and the two returning sidekicks from Afterlife entirely and nothing would've been lost. Honestly, had they done that and given that time to James Acaster and Kumail Nanjiani, I wouldn't complain.
The story is fine, it's your standard looming paranormal sci-fi doomsday threat. But the pacing is a real slog with a lot of talking about how bad things will be, which leads to the strange scenario where you find yourself actively wishing for the apocalypse to hurry along so that something might actually happen.
VERDICT: Nowhere good as the originals and disappointingly not as good as Afterlife. A perfectly fine movie to pop on if you're stuck for something to watch, but by no means a must-see.
#14 The Holdovers
I probably watched this movie in one of the worst places you could watch a movie, in the back of a airplane seat whilst on a transatlantic flight. I think it speaks volumes that even with a small screen, less than optimum sound, interruptions of flight announcements, turbulence and the tiredness that comes with crossing timezones in the middle of the night, I found The Holdovers to be an immensely engaging watch.
There's little I can say that hasn't already been said countless times over by others at this point, but you should check this film out if you get the chance. All three of the main performers are fantastic, but Paul Giamatti especially is wonderful. Even at the beginning when his character is at his most condescending and abrasive, he delivers it with such pomp and relish that you can’t help but be endeared. Watching his cloistered curmudgeon gradually soften and allow himself to be vulnerable is incredibly satisfying to watch.
VERDICT: A wonderful three-hander character piece with outstanding performances all around led by Paul Giamatti in a career highlight.
#15 Immaculate Immaculate is the latest in what appears to be an influx of Christianity themed horror in mainstream cinema over the last year or so. Off the top of my head, in recent years there’s been The Nun II, The Pope’s Exorcist, Prey For The Devil, The Exorcist: Believer, as well as the upcoming The First Omen. It’s easy to see why, the dressings and rituals associated with organised religion already have a foreboding feel to them and inverting or corrupting these is an effective means to make us feel uncomfortable.
With Immaculate, the plot is focused on Sydney Sweeney as Sister Cecilia, a young nun who has recently arrived at an Italian convent where all seems well but soon sinister secrets and nefarious acts soon come to the fore. So far, so Suspiria, which seems appropriate as there are certainly some shots and lighting choices that feel very Argento-y. My only prior exposure to Sweeney’s work was Madame Web, in which she was fairly bland and forgettable. However here, she is fully convincing in everything that’s asked of her. From Cecilia’s shrinking demure beginnings, to her mid-movie desperation and resignation, to the final manic climax, she fully delivers.
VERDICT: With so many studios going to this well, it’s easy for the water to run dry quickly. Thankfully in this case Immaculate certainly quenches the thirst for religious tinged terror. Sweeney goes from
#16 Late Night with the Devil This is a movie I’d heard about during the festival circuit last summer and had been looking forward to seeing. It’d been getting really strong buzz from the festival screenings and the premise certainly sounded interesting. On Halloween night 1977, in an attempt to boost ratings, talk show host Jack Delroy invites a supposedly possessed girl onto his program.
David Dastmalchian is front and centre and he fills the role of Delroy flawlessly. Watching him hold court with his audience and delivering quips, you feel he could easily transition into being a talk show host in real life. But what I loved most was seeing how he perfectly portrayed the insincere sincerity hosts often display, which made the times when true sincerity (and fear) came through all the more effective.
The recreation of the 70’s TV show is pitch perfect. From the set design, costumes, the fictional titles and credits of the show itself, it’s all on-point. The special effects appear to be mostly practical as opposed to digital which again feels appropriate for the setting.
This is a slow burn of a movie, with breadcrumbs being dropped and portents of danger suggesting our host, in his quest for success, is meddling with dangers he doesn’t fully comprehend. As you can imagine, it all goes predictably wrong.
VERDICT: A highly enjoyable, original take on the found-footage and possession subgenres with an amazing central performance from David Dastmalchian.

51. Tremors 5: Bloodlines (2015)52. Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell (2018) 53. The Three Musketeers (1993)54. Santo vs. Frankenstein's Daughter (1972) 55. Stay Tuned (1992)So I saw this as a kid and hadn't watched it since. Then, a few years ago, it popped back up in my head and I got the urge to check it out again, but I couldn't find it anywhere. No streaming service, no physical copy on Netflix, nothing. I think I finally found it on Dailymotion or something. Anyways, fast forward to now and it's on YouTube, and with another quiet day at work, I'm giving it another watch. For those not familiar, John Ritter plays a couch potato Dad who gets his family trapped in a demonic satellite dish and has to run the gauntlet of all 666 channels to save their souls. Honestly, a really fun and underrated movie. It has a quirky feel to it very similar to something like Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.

56. Hard Target - Watched this on Blu-ray. I recall buying this a couple of months ago, but I just hadn't gotten around to watching it. Since I was on a kick involving a cross between survival films, some of which involved urban landscapes or a rural landscape, I supposed I had meant to include those with a "Most Dangerous Game" story scenario. I also recall liking this movie, but I am not sure when the last time I had watched it was. I do, however, remember seeing it for the first time on the USA Network back in 2002, and then months later renting it because I wanted to watch it again and to see the uncut version. Really, all that was different was the lack of expletives and maybe toned down violence, and perhaps cutting out a risqué phone ad flyer, but that was it.
One thing that I must note is that I watched an international cut with a few extra minutes of footage. I am well aware that there are longer cuts, particularly the workprint cut that has more footage. If I could just find a way to watch it, or maybe watch a fan cut that incorporated some of that footage. Until then, all I can say is that it's interesting to see this cut, but with the exception of maybe one or two scenes, I am not sure what was added because it had been a while since I last watched the US theatrical cut.
The action is still fun to watch, but I think what I appreciate about this film is John Woo's directorial style. Many of the slow-motion shots in some scenes, the reflections, some close-up shots. Hell, even the use of doves added to some of the scenes. I also have to appreciate Jean-Claude Van Damme's martial arts prowess in some of the fight scenes, too.
As far as John Woo's films go, I would put this at the top when discussing his American films, but I wouldn't put at the top when discussing his films in general because I would put the likes of "The Killer" and "Hard Boiled" above this. Hell, maybe the same could be said about "A Better Tomorrow" 1 and 2. I have always liked this film.

17. Jigsaw
Pretty much what I expected from a Saw movie. Creative ways to murder people. Blood and gore galore. A storyline that is more plot holes than substance. And then a twist at the end that makes no sense at all.

53. The Three Musketeers (1993)54. Santo vs. Frankenstein's Daughter (1972) 55. Stay Tuned (1992) 56. Drop Dead Fred (1991)Another movie I haven't thought about since I was a kid but stumbled across on YouTube. For those not familiar, as adult Elizabeth's life self-destructs around her, she's suddenly re-visited by her childhood imaginary friend, Drop Dead Fred, intent on helping her through his power of sociopathic chaos. So this movie has something of a bad rap to it, and don't get me wrong, it certainly has its issues, but at the same time I also don't feel it's without its charms. Phoebe Cates is certainly trying her darndest to get her character to work. It's biggest problem is that it's trying to be the next Beetlejuice, but Rik Mayall is no Michael Keaton. In general it's solid but kinda uncomfortable to watch at times.

56. Drop Dead Fred (1991) 57. Project: ALF (1996)This television movie was an attempt to try to revive the ALF brand and get a new show going. Unfortunately there wasn't really much of a taste for the return of ALF by the general public in 1996. It's an ok enough TV movie. ALF was funny, it was neat seeing all the cameos from all the old sitcom actors, but forgettable over-all.

When I initially saw this in theaters, I really didn't like it. This time around, over a decade later, it's better than I recall but still never grabs me the way I feel it should. I like the cast, the visuals, and aspects of the story but something is missing. [***]

44-Akira-Blu Ray
Realized I didn't own this on Blu. Grabbed it and watched it with the 1998 English Dub. Which I dont think I have ever heard. Saw it subbed on VHS then a revival screening. And the DVDs I have I think are the later dub.
Visually an amazing film. Storywise it is a bit of a mess. I know it is just part of the story from the manga.
9.7 Clown Bikers out of 10.
45-Blade-Blu Ray
Another I haven't watched in forever. Still holds up. And this blu ray looks nice.
7.8 Bloodbaths in a meat locker out of 10.
