It’s a gimmick that’s always gonna get over with their hardcore base that were turned off other promotions by an overt amount of sports entertainment.

But it’s not like AEW doesn’t produce its fair share of sports entertainment anyway so that’s there for all the people who enjoy it.

I refuse to believe anything about Eddie Kingston is a character. Pretty sure he legitimately hates "sports entertainment" and most other things. And I love him for that.

The whole thing is a fine line anyway, AEW do a lot of goofy stuff but generally get the tone right for me, I mostly find the stuff intended to be funny to be so, whereas I mostly found WWE's attempts at humour in the bad years to be a combination of unfunny, offensive, cringeworthy, puerile, tactless, and gross. And I think that's what most people associate "sports entertainment" with, not stuff outside of wrestling which has always existed, like long promos, comedy etc but WWE's own brand of it, and the actual term "sports entertainment" which obviously people despise.

Mox is one that fascinates me, one of the best talkers in the business but doesn't seem to overly like promo segments, couple of times I can recall him seeming irritated and saying "this isn't All Elite Talking" and it didn't feel like it was aimed at his opponent (don't even think there was a specific opponent on one of the instances). Remember Kenny making a similar comment himself though he's a weaker promo and it's more understandable. I mostly favour the in ring stuff but that kind of thing goes too far in the other direction for me, there does need to be some non-in ring stuff too. But again in Mox's case it probably just comes from bad experiences in WWE.

My only issue with this has always been the complete tonal clash when companies try to integrate specifically spoopy shit and then wanna go all ESPN.

Always comes back to what the company wants to be.

Bret was more like Gunther in that he was serious in a campy way. A determined badass and family man but he also walked around in giant pink epaulette jackets. Also Shawn was such a slimy shit that you got why he hated him so much.

I wouldn't actually mind if they had just ONE act that was inherently anti-fun and had them go RTC on the goofier acts. Even have them "indoctrinate" some of the lower-tier guys, like Nese and Daivari. I would personally nominate Peter Avalon, since he fits the prototype that Stevie Richards did when he formed Right to Censor. Call it Write to Wrestle or something stupid like that lol
