You can tell who is actually watching the shows or not because the things people are complaining about (there's no storyline!) don't actually exist with this current CMLL thing. It's an actual angle where the CMLL guys are "invading" and BCC have taken exception to it. Forbidden Door 2 also did a much better job of building up the matches as much more than exhibition matches for the sake of them. And of course if you're a lapsed fan, if you turn on the show for the first time in forever it's going to be confusing. That goes for wrestling in general. I turned on WWE for the first time in years after in 2005 and outside of some Attitude Era and WCW holdovers I had no idea who the f*** any of those people were. That's just how it is. I'm asking this from pure ignorance because I know so little about these Mexican federations but why exactly is it that every time I see talks about their partnerships, they're insane or petty as all f***? Because Lucha Libre politics makes even WWF and WCW at their most hostile look tame by comparison. They must be but like... You're really going to agree to not allowing any of your other Mexican wrestlers on the shows when AEW has a ton of them on an already packed roster? Multiple stars at that?

I think this is an underdiscussed part of wrestling in general. You can do all the introducing you want, but a huge amount of your audience is going to come into the middle of any given thing and that's just the way it is. Even a new promotion is almost always building on context from the existing wrestling world. The only real entry point into wrestling is in media res.

Like I wasn't exactly on the up and up on everyone in AEW when DoN 2019 started. Like I knew the guys who came in from New Japan like Omega, the Bucks, Hangman, and Cody (also WWE and TNA/ROH for him). And I knew the guys who had been around in WWE, TNA, and older ROH shows like Jericho, Kazarian, Daniels, etc. But people like Sammy Guevara, Britt Baker, Hikaru Shida, Riho, Darby Allin, MJF, and Jack Perry? Never heard of them. Most I knew about Jack was that he was Luke Perry's son. But I was curious to see more of them after seeing them for the first time.

CMLL guys have been on a bunch of TV episodes so far and they haven’t had any other Mexican wrestlers on the same show so I’m not sure the report from Dave is wrong.

Even a new promotion is almost always building on context from the existing wrestling world. The only real entry point into wrestling is in media res. Which is partly why sometimes you book a match that just feels like it'd be cool to see; you get people tuning in and seeing a good match with a hot crowd, and you have a better chance of getting people to stick around and pay attention to other stuff that's happening. Even then, AEW tends to try to add some kind of story element to the proceedings: Ishii faced OC, and it was placed in the context of Orange being willing to defend his belt against his friends and stablemates in the past, plus it led into Undisputed Kingdom attacking him and Ishii making the save, or the Bryan Danielson/Zach Sabre match has led into them having a rematch in NJPW, or Copeland drawing Suzuki for his open challenge because he called out "veterans" to step up, that sort of thing. It's not an in-depth story, to be sure, but it's almost never matches just happening within a bubble that has no impact on anything else within the show or its ongoing stories. But thinking about this particular point does take me back to buying Wrestle Kingdom 9 on PPV because I'd heard so much about NJPW at that point, heard that AJ Styles was killing it there, and I jumped in not really knowing who anyone on the card was aside of Styles, the Bucks, Kenny (and I was shocked when I saw him in his Cleaner getup, I was expecting "video game nerd who'd cameoed in ROH throwing Hadoukens" Kenny), and some of the TNA or former WWE guys in Bullet Club. I walked away with Nakamura/Ibushi leaving my jaw on the floor and thinking Tanahashi/Okada had to be the coolest rivalry I'd never seen a match of before...and it wasn't just because they were "cool matches", it was because they told good stories within those cool matches.

A lot of swings and misses from Dave in this week’s Observer then. This, the Triple H/Rock match segment, and the Dreamer TNA creative stories.

Because Lucha Libre politics makes even WWF and WCW at their most hostile look tame by comparison. I mean I did say I've not been watching for a while so might be wrong, if that's how they're handling it with CMLL then good- I hope they're communicating who the guys are and why to care about them though. Because again - I haven't found they've done that even with guys from NJPW I know and like. Really not a fan of how they've presented Ishii or Suzuki for example, and I like both. I don't know that I agree re. Forbidden Door 2. Certainly don't agree that "of course it's confusing if you're a lapsed fan" - it is but it's not always equally easy to pick back up. I regularly found that missing two weeks with AEW, or just watching Dynamite but not Rampage/Collision, felt very hard to follow and fragmented- and not in the way of a serialised show where you miss 2 episodes, of course you're behind on plot. More that there wasn't much communication of plot or ability to pick up what I'd missed, especially if guys might go missing from a show. I find it harder to pick up casually than WWE and I just don't have the passion to watch weekly anymore, haven't for a longtime. I say this as someone who did watch AEW weekly when it started but began to wane just as the pandemic started and have never really got the mojo back. I should try getting back into it, but I just feel a bit tired of it. I've said a few times lately I'm wondering if wrestling's just not for me anymore. Omega being out, Ibushi being out and washed up, Claudio being perpetually 4th wheel in his stable, Miro AWOL, Archer never going anywhere, Hirsch relegated to ROH, etc. doesn't help, lot of my favourites. Marq Quen's back at least so that might perk my interest but I'd need a hard sell to pick it back up and give the benefit of the doubt with the cross promotion as I really didn't find it did much last time. I watch wrestling with my partner generally these days, and found myself having to spend a LOT more time explaining who guys are with AEW or what their deal is compared to WWE.

This a thing where yes technically there has not been an episode of AEW TV where both AAA and CMLL talent wrestled but that seems to be a very technical point and overall it seems that they're able to appear in the same show/event as long as they don't interact.

Idk what the f*** is going on with Dave but ever since he's started skewing more negative towards AEW, it feels like he's lost a lot of people willing to actually source him correct information and he is getting screwed for it
Hope those extra hate clicks were worth it dude?

Thank God TK doesn't listen to some posters here. Akayama vs Danielson is a kickass match I'm glad he doesn't listen to A LOT of the online criticism he gets, because of a lot of it is ridiculous jibberish where if any one of them actually had the book for a day they'd produce the worst wrestling show ever seen by humans lol

Thank God TK doesn't listen to some posters here. Akayama vs Danielson is a kickass match "Bryan Danielson getting all his dream matches in for his last year of full-time wrestling" is a hell of a thing going on. Just let the man keep having kickass matches with whoever he wants until he goes part-time.
