I put this in the "the roster is stacked" thread, but have been thinking for a while about asking this, though I'm sure most of you think differently than I do: I think they need to close the Forbidden Door. You have enough talent on the roster that you don't need to bring in CMLL and New Japan talent. I've never watched either, so I don't have the affection for Ishii or Minoro Suzuki that a lot of people had, especially when they always lose to AEW talent. I don't care about the CMLL guys who have no personality, when you have characters like Penta and Fenix, who I've liked since Lucha Underground. About the only outsiders who have any nongeneric characters are the joshi: I enjoyed when Emi Sakura or Maki Itoh were on because they have characters. All I know is Suzuki is a physical guy with a weird haircut and Ishii is the stone pitbull. I'd rather their time be spent on making me get to know the Brian Keiths, using Lance Archer or giving Miro something to do.

The Forbidden Door is one of the things that gives AEW a distinction from WWE, and the annual show has become one of their most successful events in terms of both critical acclaim and business. Closing it would be an incredibly dumb thing to do.
Also I don't know how anyone can look at the way Hechicero presents himself in both his entrance and ring work and thinks the guy has no personality.

Nah. I think aew is pretty smart with how they use the semi-regulars since travel reopened, they're mostly perfect guest wrestlers with distinct styles and usually lose. I'd be much more down on it if the likes of Evil or Sanada were coming in an winning for no reason.
I generally like they do things just because they think it'll be cool. Although I do think Rampage should be the destination for 75% of the essentially exhibition matches for one-off guests, a few should be on Collision or ppv pre-shows, only proper dream matches should be on Dynamite.
Too early to be sure CMLL will be worth the airtime but so far so good. It's clearly going somewhere. I'd definitely prefer they're a big part of the Forbidden Door ppv now that aew has signed most of the best of njpw. Although the technical masterclass with Danielson was enough to justify what we've seen so far.

No, especially with the introduction of CMLL into the mix this year. It may not be a big show when New Japan has a down year, but it's how you're going to make the stars for future shows both stateside and in Japan.

That would be shooting the promotion in the foot. It's like when WCW was bringing in Muta and the like for short stints during their peak. Forbidden Door stuff, like bringing in people from NJPW or CMLL, becomes an attraction to the promotion and adds some unpredictability and diversity in the shows. And honestly it is almost a preview to come for a lot of talent who may end up in AEW at some point when their contracts end in those promotions.

nope because it doesn't just give dream matches it allows outside talent to see & experience what aew backstage is like and gives potential to them signing in the future if their contracts are up.

No. Anything that resembles AEW just becoming like WWE can get in the bin. I don't see why working with other companies would ever be something they stop doing, it's healthy for the business and I personally like seeing guys who are unlikely to ever actually sign still work with AEW talent. Saying the CMLL guys have no personality just sounds a bit ignorant tbh, and the whole " I don't know anything about this person" stuff is so easily remedied with a couple of quick Google searches to fill in the blanks Excalibur might leave, someone like Suzuki has been showing up for literal years, if you really wanted to find out more about him you've had plenty of time, there's only so much AEW can really do. Plus it works both ways, you don't watch NJPW, but now Ospreay is signing with AEW you already know him, same with Jay White, same with Okada, because they've shown up beforehand with the whole Forbidden Door thing.

Maybe less use so their appearances mean more but in no way end it. One of the great things about AEW and ECW and WCW before it was the acknowledgment that there is a world outside their promotion with huge stars and great talent. Liger, Muta, Chono, Guerrero, Mysterio, Jericho, and more got their chance because of this type of thing (Hell, Penta and Fenix because of LU and AAA).

How can you say someone has no personality when you haven't watched them?

Feels less special than it ever has before but it wouldn’t make sense to stop I guess. I do wonder if TNA works with them or just keeps doing their own thing.

I think right now using it to help establish CMLL wrestlers is fine since aside from Mistico I don't think many really know those guys.
I think the bigger issue is until the CMLL deal the Forbidden Door has essentially been Nagata, Shibata, Ishii, Suzuki, and Vikingo semi regularly.

Eh, AEW doesn't really present itself nearly as much as "Promo-Driven Scripted Drama" as WWE does, so it doesn't feel as out-of-place to have random Lucha guys come in and take TV time as it would in WWE.
AEW exists as a place where people with no ties to existing angles or narratives can come in and have matches "just because", and that's fine.

"AEW needs to stop working with other promotions and further isolate themselves from the business" is a hell of a take. Not a very smart nor well thought out take, but a hell of a take nonetheless.

The collaboration across multiple companies is legit cool as hell, I hope they never stop. I love discovering new talents I've never seen before, or seeing talents I've watched for years in other promotions getting to perform in front of big, hot crowds.
