This makes me wonder why they didn't try replacing all the talent that left during the mass exodus. There's probably many reasons why, but I'm gonna go with them simply being lazy. I'm sure there were plenty of untalented hacks that would have joined, but Doug and crew likely didn't feel like putting in the work. I think, and I will be as charitable as possible here... No I won't. It's because they're f***ing idiots that don't know what they're doing. Anyone worth recruiting for the website at that point was already friends with the people who left. Anyone else with decent numbers was not appropriate for their site because of their unhinged takes. Anyone younger than them who was getting over had no need to go on their shitty website because they just use YouTube. They were screwed, but also, dismally unqualified for their jobs.

Honestly by that point having a seperate website for stuff like that was irrelevant. YouTube's standards had relaxed considerably, allowing for long form videos. There was nothing to be gained for anyone.

I'll give Doug credit for lasting 15 years at least.
But man it was a rough and sad ride here. He was seen in such a positive light the first 4-5 years and then Demo Reel changed a lot and it seemed like that turning point lead to the rabbit hole that ultimately derailed his product and chances at relationships.
I can't remember the last time I watched but I remember his schtick and routine starting to become dated by 2015 and made worse with skits that no one cared about.

That, and there’s no money involved. Channel Awesome pays in ‘exposure’, and since I can’t imagine many people were going to Channel Awesome to watch after everyone left, what kind of exposure could they possibly get?

I haven’t watched many recent nostalgia critic episodes in the last few years, but something he started doing consistently towards the end of my time as a regular viewer was the thing at the end of his reviews where he took on the tone of a sitcom dad during a “very special episode” and did this condescending speech about the perceived mistakes the movie made and how it *should* have been done. He did this “I’m not mad (despite angrily riffing on this movie for the last 25 minutes) I’m just disappointed” thing that seemed to be done with a genuine earnestness that was COMPLETELY misplaced every single time he did it.
He tried to pull the “I’m a legit fan of cinema and these are words of wisdom that I wish to impart on filmmakers” and it rings hollow as all hell.
James Rolf is a legit fan of cinema, but even when he’s like “I would have liked to have seen this or that done differently” it’s not like he’s talking down to actual filmmakers.
He’s the “Nostalgia Critic”. He’s supposed to remember old, sub-par stuff so you don’t have to. Kinda takes a bit of the fun out of the gimmick when he’s just Angry Joe-ing recent stuff that’s already been shredded by everyone and their mothers on social media.
Dude deserved his 15 minutes. I hope he saved and/or invested wisely. But there are a LOT of folks out there who do what he was good at WAY better than he ever did.
Still, as far as YouTubers who’ve fallen from grace go, at least Doug Walker’s not done anything *too* bad.

It always makes me laugh when I think of what a martyr Doug was for fair use when his method of reviewing films wasn't even remotely fair use. He'd literally just show most of the movie in order from beginning to end and riff on it. You can make a very sound argument that his videos actually do replace the act of watching the film he's reviewing, which means it's not fair use at all.

Yeah, when he was good he was really good, but he was nowhere near the same guy when he returned to doing the NC after the demo reel stuff. I thought he KILLED it with the commericals videos. Might be my favorite work of his

Yeah, there's a bunch of reasons why the style of site was no longer viable. Blip and the other services had a different pay out I believe, and not to mention people would come to Channel Awesome to see like Spoony and then maybe see "oh this person I never heard of is reviewing a movie I like/hate" and you'd click on them and maybe you found someone new to watch. It happened to me a lot like 12 years ago >_> But when there were no draws anymore there was really no point to get on there.

Mom help JesuOtaku has been cosplaying Radical Ed for the last hour and won't stop I remember a lot of the time in crossovers they'd do a lot of, "Haha, girl!" jokes with him and I have to imagine even if it's not exactly intentional all of that stuff has aged unbelievably poorly.

If you want to know how the bits have aged, Jew Wario inexplicably showed up with no shirt on like 5 minutes ago.

To be fair, you could say the same thing about Wikipedia, since you could just read the summary of a film instead of watching it.

Yeah, like, as much as he threw a fit over it Tommy Wiseau's attempts to block the Room review were perfectly justifiable because it really is just Doug showing you a highlight reel of most of the funny parts wrapped in some weird Back to the Future framing device for reasons.

I forgot about the whole “fair use” thing that Doug Walker twisted himself up in knots over.
Even if they did meet the guidelines for how long each clip could be (and in a lot of those early reviews, they didn’t) there’s still the issue of how each of the NC “reviews” was a collection of the best parts of the movie.
Sure, maybe each clip was only 30 seconds, but there were like 20 clips from the entire running time of the movie. You could watch those clips, absent all the NC stuff, and usually get a pretty good summary of the movie.
Oh, and while we’re critiquing NC reviews, can I just point out that those videos AREN’T REVIEWS. I don’t know what he thinks “reviews” are, but they’re not detailed summaries of movies with gags and snarky commentary. Sorry. Pet peeve I guess.
