That ISN'T a two year vacation!
Yes I know a lot of us just want him to take a long ass break so he can reinvent himself. Plenty have said "chris jericho away" or even "chris jericho to hell" but that isn't realistic with some of the odd ratings boosts he is pulling in. Look at the match he main evented in a little bit ago. Through the pretty steady boos he is getting at some of the shows, he is still popular enough that he likely isn't going anywhere. They're still singing the theme song and the matches aren't that bad but the stove/oven has been left unattended.
So!
What to do with him if he's going to continue being featured most weeks that ISN'T months off. I haven't liked his whole shtick for a while now and it seems like I'm not the only one but there also doesn't seem to be a spot he could be put right now that wouldn't irritate a lot of people. Bored as f*** as I am of him, I haven't seen any ideas really thrown out there on what he could be doing now that would be better. They don't even have to be good ideas, just anything at all.
Personally I'd hit abort on the HOOK storyline that started on Wednesday and have him go to "mentor" another wrestler who is barely featured or wins, someone like a Kip Sabian. Jericho talks a big game about helping him but Kip is the reason the team keeps getting wins, Kip gets most of the pins and there's no real jealousy but the turn doesn't happen for either guy. Within a couple months they split off to do singles stuff but in the meantime you can play off the fact that AEW's fanbase is already well aware that the fans see Jericho's shit right now as inserting himself with acts more intriguing than him, put him with someone doing something close to absolutely nothing. Not these acts that are up and coming and make Jericho look like complete ass, like he's attaching his ship to someone rising.
That or go full blown delusional 80's rock star (some would say he already is this in kayfabe and out) but turn it up to 11. Spinal Tap as a wrestler but an ultra heel. Take the worst performing quarterly over the last year for Dynamite and put Jericho out there in the ronald mcdonald David Bowie outfit, have him sing some shit and I guarantee you it would go from "oh f*** all of this" to at least some of the crowd being like "OH HELL YEAH SING THAT AWFUL SHIT LETS GO". Backstage promo where he demands nothing but green m&ms and when he doesn't get them, threatens to sing at people. Less talented Jillian Hall. f*** I hope I don't summon that guy, stay back beast do not post her. If you don't get me the chocolates I asked for, I will go down to that ring and sing "Sailing" at you. Have him talk about all these 70s/80s acts and he won't shut up until Rick Ross shows up, 450 splashes him and you could even have a yacht rock vs hip-hop feud. That last one is absolutely ass but it made me chuckle so it is staying.
So what should they do with Jericho?

Chris Jericho has been with AEW non-stop since the beginning, which is now at five years and counting.
Historically in Jericho's career, he doesn't stick around the same company as long as that without a break. The only run of his that's longer than his AEW run was his first WWE run from 1999-2005. This is probably been as big of a factor in contributing to his longevity as anything else.
So unless he starts performing a drastic overhaul of his character and not simply changing his moniker for the 5 millionth time, I don't know what he can do to solve this character rut but leave for a while.

I genuinely don't know. He can still put on moderately decent matches and the crowds in the arena do generally react to him. But there is just zero interest from most fans over whatever he does. I quite liked him going down memory with Atlantis Jr and I thought his ROH title run was good (last good thing he's done). But big picture I just don't know.
Beating him doesn't really do much for the other guy nowadays. Not that much value in him jobbing out to everyone. He's flipped face and heel a fair bit and neither really stick. He has no business being near the main event nowaday.
He has said he just wants to quietly retire where nobody notices. Doesn't want the big send off. So perhaps we are closer to his retirement then we think.

I've not enjoyed Jericho's work in a long time but I don't think he's completely washed so I'm not going to say he should be completely off TV.
Now that Sting is gone, I think Jericho should take more of a Sting role. Have some fun party matches, get a partner over, and make the appearances more sporadic and more special. Make him Sting, only without the 30-0 winning streak.

If he wants to quietly retire, I think that moment should and probably will be sooner than later. I can see him being a valuable mind to pick for the younger wrestlers backstage (and there's a wealth of them between Jericho, Copeland, Danielson, Claudio, Henry, etc), and he's actually a pretty good commentator when he isn't in tryhard mode. But he also just looks spent in the ring both physically and emotionally.
Maybe transitioning to doing tag and multi-man matches that can cover a lot of his warts that often show up in singles matches lately. Did wonders for Sting.

I miss the one-dollar potato burritos at Taco Bell. I miss the 79-cent "jacked up BRC (beans, rice, hot pepper cheese) burritos" at Del Taco too.
Bring them back Jericho and make my fat-ass happy.

Doesn't help that Sammy keeps getting suspended. Maybe Hook but that doesn't seem like a natural fit

I am going to say this about Jericho. Those of us who are long-time wrestling fans, and especially those of us who have been fans since the 90s are justifiably getting sick of Jericho's schtick. Especially the current midlife crisis version of Jericho.
But, I recently badgered my wife to indulge my guiltiest of guilty pleasures and watch the occasional pro wrestling show with me. Chris Jericho, even in all of his midlife crisis glory, is her absolute favorite wrestler. He's still got that intangible entertainer quality and charisma and his matches are still usually pretty good. I don't really buy into the notion of there being "casual fans" of pro wrestling in 2024, but to the extent that they still exist at all, Jericho appeals to them, I think.
I just feel like he's about due for one of his patented extended absences, after which he comes back feeling shockingly reinvented and fresh.

Him and Sting should be mysterious gay bikers named Rip & Dip who are always accompanied by some Jeep Wrangler music and offer wisdom from the road.

Like as much as we all like making fun of Fozzy and their music, it's undeniable how much the crowd loves singing along to Judas no matter if he's face or heel. It's such a great wrestling theme.

No hate from over here, Jericho was my first favorite wrestler and kept that title for over a decade. It is just now where he is really pushing it with me and a good amount of people.

Turn him heel. Give him a new stable. He is 53. He’s the exact age Flair was during Evolution. It’s about that time. He’s still Chris Jericho but someone, if not a couple dudes, need to be on the forefront in front of him.

Monday night war veteran. Celebrating that time, but all the bad bits.
Bring back the attitude era youtube comment energy with hint of ripping off Cardona's ecw original schtick. Parodying how for years wwe would rather keep going back to that nostalgia than move to something new and tna would worship anyone from that time.
If the Hardyz are sticking around maybe their best use would be his goons. They could try to recruit the other remaining guys from that time. Lots of opportunities for cameos but more the gangrels than any big names. Promos to upcoming stars saying yeah you're good but could you did it against The Blue Meanie?

It's a weird thing where 2022 was genuinely the best in ring year for him in his entire career, but his programs still went on way too long. Then in 2023, his in ring work got noticeably worse and the program problem continues. He just needs to step away, you can't freshen him up right now.

He probably should have called it a day as a full time talent after his run as The Ocho. His ring work was still excellent at the time but he has absolutely fallen off a cliff since 2022 in ring and he just smothers the momentum of any young guy he works with.
Probably needs to take a good year off away to make the heart grow fonder

I would mind him a whole lot less if his programs weren't so goddamned long. His feuds don't need to be 6 months long.

Send Jericho away until Wembley. He does a match with someone, and puts them over. He then does Rampage, and the occasional Dynamite and Collision commentary for the rest of the year. Then at the start of 2025, he can do a program or two every few months.
Like, I'm just exhausted with Jericho. It's the same fatigue I felt as a kid in 2004. Like he's a fine wrestler and not the dullest.. but his programs are now and you couldn't pay me to care. He's been practically nonstop since Day 1, and it's time he took time off.
