Hate it out of principal.
Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, I was paid to scan and pack grocery items.
Now I go into the same supermarket and pay them to scan and pack my own goods.

I use them as much as possible at stores, I find them much, much better then going through the cashier. Home Depot really pisses me off, because someone comes over and talks you through the whole thing anyways and a big part of the reason I use self checkout to avoid the random small talk. I'm buying a box of screws, I don't need help scanning, I know how to use the machine and f*** your f***ing online survey.
McDonald's is the only fast food where I use it because they basically force you to here, all 4 McDick's in Brandon only have 1 till now and 2-6 kiosks

I love it at Walmart, since I’m usually only buying a few items and it isn’t fussy. The grocery store is too much of a pain in the ass, though. It’s slow. Everything I scan has to go in the bag, then I have to wait for the bag area scale to settle before I scan the next item or it will tell me to put the previous item (the one I just put in the bag) in the bag. I buy a lot of produce, which is a pain to look up. Oh, and the bagging/scale area only has space for four bags. Heaven forbid I have more stuff than that and need to put one of the full bags in my cart to make room.

I hate it mostly because the screen never works so I'm poking it repeatedly to do something

Prefer them if I've just got a few items. Hate them for a "big" shop.

I like it when I only have a handful of items. Ultimately though I'd prefer to suffer through an awkward exchange with a server if it means more people have jobs.

In almost all cases, except when I'm running short on time and need an overworked attendant to confirm I'm old enough to buy an energy drink.

Pretty much all the time if they are available which is a god send when I’m not really in the mood to talk to anyone. I don’t really see packing my own stuff and scanning it as a big task either. Especially when staff are being paid badly anyway.

Yes absolutely I prefer self check out. I don’t need the shame of having someone scan my groceries. I don’t need someone to judge me for the trash food that I get at the grocery store. Let’s review my most recent visit to the store: 2 pints of ice cream (it was a bogo!) bag of chips, box of cookies, and a bunch of energy drinks. I don’t need to be shamed by an employee about my poor choices.
Also don’t tell my gf about this, she’d go into orbit if she knew

I avoid self-checkout as much as possible. Whenever there's an option to do something myself or have someone else do it for me for free, I'll almost always take the latter. The only time I do self-checkout is if I only have one or two items and the express lanes are too packed.

I f***ing hate dealing with people, so self checkout is almost a must for me. A Food 4 Less I used to go to took out their self checkout and I never went again. I just found a Walmart with a huge, amazing self checkout and I love it.

It really depends on my mood plus the amount of groceries or products I look to buy. If it's a busy weekend and I need to get someplace in a hurry, I'd go for self checkout just to get my purchases out of the way. But if I end up having twenty or more items, and the lines aren't crazy, I'd go for traditional checkout.

Depends on the store and the situation. If I'm shopping for one of my patients at Stop and Shop, I do self-checkout so I can do her stuff separate from my own. At Walmart, though, I insist on having a person ring me up, because their self-checkout machines never work right for me. And if I'm buying something like a gift card or a video game, I have to go through the normal checkout.
For fast food, I order ahead using Doordash or the restaurant's app. I find there's less margin for error if it's spelled out exactly how I want it, plus I don't have to wait five minutes just to have someone wait on me.

I don't work there and there is no discount for self checkout. I will avoid it like the plague when possible even if it means waiting in line for a bit. Most interactions with the cashier consist of 'do you need bags? Do you have a loyalty card? This is how much your total is'. Not a great amount of chitchat and I don't mind when there is a bit of chatter.
Self checkout if you have to weigh anything or have a discount sticker on something, half the time you gotta call someone over anyways. There is also the jobs argument.

Consider, they ring through potentially hundreds of people in a shift. Unless you go out of your way to be a jerk to them, you'll be forgotten quickly. Plus, yours is probably not the only one they've had like that and they've probably seen far worse.

Grocery shopping I prefer to use the self check out but when I eat fast food I prefer to go to the register and deal with a real person. At actual grocery stores, it's just slower. If one till goes down or one person who is not tech literate has an error, it creates a massive backlog. At a local drug/convenience store, I prefer it. I can just grab my 2-3 things, keep my headphones in and leave

If it is just a few items, I absolutely love it. If I'm doing my monthly grocery shopping where I'm buying somewhere around 2-300 dollars worth of groceries and household supplies, I'll be damned if I'm using it. I already trekked around this god forsaken store, dodging the unwashed masses and I'm not going to scan and bag my own stuff.
My last two trips to Wally World nearly resulted in me having a stroke or going to jail. My first trip I took my disabled mother there, the motorized cart was running on fumes (so to speak, its electric and claimed to have 100% when we started a mere 30 minutes earlier). There was one damn real check out line open and a line for that went to Des Moines. I was about to lose my mind when they finally opened two more lines. The second one, I literally went for two things, the attendant watched me scan my two things, and wanted to see my receipt. I could have handled it better, but god damn, there was like two people, the attendant and me. Get a life.

If the self checkouts are set to accept cash and card I am good.
Most of the time I am out shopping I am picking up stuff for 4 or more people. So I put everyone elses stuff on the credit card and pay cash for my items.
And if the machines are set for card and cash selfcheckout is much faster. And I rather save time.
But it is rare tehy are set that way. So I am stuckk in the normal lines. Where it appears the local store decided to put the slowest people they got to run the registers.
I prefer shopping at 2am when it is only myself and the stock crew in teh store. But that ended 4 damn years ago.
Fast food paying with card I will do self check out. Paying in cash gotta goto register.
Might just be getting older but I know my time is limited. I rather not waste 20 to 45 minutes waiting in line.

If I'm in a rush and only have a couple of items, sure. But for my regular stock up trips, it's nice to go to my favorite cashiers and say hi.
