The answer for me will always be the Gail Kim vs Taryn Terrell Last Knockout Standing match from Slammiversary 2013. I know how good Kim is. It still makes no sense that Tiffany from WWECW had that match. It wasn’t just good. It was spectacular.

This is a wrestler I was surprised I liked instead, but even though I used to be very “meh” on him, I realized in recent years that most of my favorite WWE matches from about 2007 to 2012 were John Cena matches.
I don’t believe you can lay credit for all of that to his opponents.

Trying to find a balance, trying to build a balance. It wasn't until 2020 that I saw the full High Incident Tommy Dreamer vs Brian Lee scaffold match. We all know *of* it from the ECW Extreme Warfare commercials and the very ending being seen in so many clip shows - but WOW! I'm using no hyperbole when I saw it's the best scaffold match I've ever seen. Hot crowd, chemistry absolutely clicking, and a surprisingly deep level of psychology. One to definitely look deeper in. Next, the December 1991 Rockers vs Legion of Doom match from Superstars. I don't believe this has been on any of the LOD's or Shawn's many compilations, so when I saw it announced during my on-the-day rewatch of Superstars 91 a few years back I guess I expected it to be underwhelming considering the talent involved. I was completely wrong - great match, impressive finish and really pushed forward both the LOD's rep and the Rockers toward a breakup. Everything you could want from a Superstars match. Antonio Inoki vs King Kong Bundy (1985) - Bundy's absolute all time best match. Just an outstanding encounter. You watch it and you of course since absolutely that Bundy needs to headline the next Wrestlemania. Umaga vs Cena at Rumble 2007. I know John Cena broke his reputation of being "bad" and is known as being a bit of a workhorse now, but in 2007 he was being openly panned by guys like Triple H, Meltzer, Cornette and Lance Storm while also being eaten up by the audience. I think it was the first time in his career he had the highest rated match on a card

Full credit to her, she learned her craft and decided to improve. Unfortunate it was at the absolute deadest time in the history of wrestling, with really only one company being on a major TV provider

Jeff Hardy's recent string of matches before he got his nose busted on an errant bump and is now shelved.
Was some of his best work in like... five years? Didn't think he still had it in him, thought his body was cooked.

Two immediately come to mind. I'll never get over how surprised I was by the men's WrestleMania showcase tag match from WrestleMania 39. It had no right being as good as it was. It had no build, no hype, and no expectations and turned out to be one of the most fun and exciting 8-minute car crashes I've ever seen in professional wrestling. Every single competitor in the ring gave it 100 percent and floored it from the moment the bell rang. I have no problem saying it was one of my top three matches of 2023, it was that entertaining. Everyone involved in that match deserves a TON of credit for getting a night that started off on the worst foot possible with that Cena/Theory match onto the track of “Was this the best night in company history?” that it ended up on.

So I got around to buying the WWF Summerslam 1992 DVD. Never seen the show in it's entirety before, but started watching the full live version last night.
Tito Santana Vs Papa Shango. Honestly, a great match. Well defined heel and face, an overall slower pace that allows excellent character work from Shango, but then you notice the pace pick up when Tito takes control, and some genuinely good action. It's one of the better matches on the card, and it's a shame it was left off the main show.

-Hulk Hogan vs King Kong Bundy WM2 I've always thought this one gets an unfairly bad rap. By modern standards it's perhaps not a "Wrestlemania main event", and it's not a mat classic by any means, but it's a perfectly fine eighties Hogan vs. monster heel match with some good visuals, and the crowd was really into it. It's alright.

Let me put my Jay Hunter mask and reference that Test vs Brock Lesnar at King Of The Ring 2002 has no business being that good of an hoss battle.

I get that wrestlers are generally smaller now, more agile and healthier - in regards to substances - but two big, jacked up dudes throwing shit in really snug.. not enough of it haha

I would guess that most get around it with a doctor prescription for TRT, but quite honestly the jury is still out on what synthetic testosterone does to the human body over the long term anyways. give me more HOSS fights!

Ric Flair vs Big Show hardcore match in 2006. Gory and wonderful
Mike Knox and Test vs Sandman and Dreamer at Hammersmith. Short but surprisingly brutal too

I'm really happy to see more love for the Wrestlemania 2 main event here. I revisited the whole event last year when I got a restored copy of the original broadcast (not the Coliseum Video or Network one) and it's a fun show aside from the boxing match debacle. Great chaotic energy and a lot for everyone. Just fun chaos.
And yeah, Hogan vs Bundy is exactly what it needed to be and what it should be.

Hulk Hogan vs. The Genius isn’t workrate warfare, but damn it’s some well constructed pro wrestling. It’s not all Lanny Poffo either, Hogan playing the nigh-indestructible man of iron off of Genius’s agility and mocking his pomposity is golden.

I don’t know what the temperature of the match is for anyone else, but given The Sandman’s narrative of being ‘all-entrance’, I actually really loved the Stairway to Hell match against Sabu at.. whatever year’s House Party? Might’ve been a different event but I’m sure someone will know what I’m talking about. Pretty sweet match.

So I have two matches and they're from the same event.
First is the Underdogs vs. the Bodydonnas from Survivor Series 1995. It was definitely a match designed to fill time and give eight guys a PPV payday, but man, did they make the most of the time allotted to them! While the main purpose of the match was to build up the newly heel 1-2-3 Kid, everyone got a chance to shine, in particular Skip, Jannetty and Horowitz. Hell, Bob Holly even got to eliminate Tom Prichard.
The other match is the Wildcard match. A really good mix of guys with compelling matches and intersecting storylines. You had Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon having issues/history with nearly everyone else in the match, but while Michaels didn't make much effort to work with Sid or Bulldog, Razor actually made an effort to work with his teammates, even taking some cheap shots at Ahmed from the apron. Speaking of Ahmed, they did a great job of establishing him as a top guy right away, and they definitely hid his weaknesses well. It also got people excited for the Razor/Kid feud, and continued the arc started during the Underdogs match with Razor, Kid and Sid.
