Shout out to that PPV that was main-evented by Seth vs. Dolph for the Intercontinental title for no apparent reason.

Extreme Rules 2018 Notable Other Matches: Shinske Nakamura vs Jeff Hardy for the US Championship Kevin Owens vs Braun Strowman Bobby Lashley vs Roman Reigns AJ Styles vs Rusev for the WWE Championship Ending aside...Kurt Angle vs Mark Henry at Royal Rumble 06 qualifies IMO. Idt anyone had that in their Main Event bingo card at the beginning of 2006. Kurt had Main Evented a few PPVs at the end of 2005 challenging John Cena for the WWE Championship but suddenly hes fighting for the World Heavyweight Championship against Mark Henry who just returned a month prior after missing almost 2 years and only being midcard at best all career.

Angle/Henry almost assuredly went on last at the 2006 Rumble because Undertaker made the ring collapse afterward. Can't really put on any other matches if the ring falls apart.

They just put caution tape around the giant hole for the two matches after Taz & Bam Bam went through the ring at Living Dangerously ‘98. You can do anything if you don’t care about worker safety!

Early Survivor Series are sort of an outlier. You had main events with Butch Reed, Ken Patera, Hillbilly Jim and the Red Rooster. Good point. That was kind of neat about the early Survivor Series. You'd see a guy totally out of place on a main event team. It was kind of like the Royal Rumble 92 where Bobby and Gorilla would note how unlikely it would be for a Skinner or Virgil to get a shot at the world title.

Christian Cage vs Darby Allin for the TNT title main eventing WrestleDream last year.
It pretty much had to with Edge debuting afterwards but without that knowledge it's a very underwhelming PPV main event.

Danielson/Sabre could've gone on last, I guess, but there was nothing wrong with having a title match go on last.

"Ending Aside" I know why it happened but imagine telling someone in December after Survivor Series and before Christmas that Kurt Angle vs Mark Henry for the World Heavyweight Championship would Main Event the Rumble.

I wonder how many weird WCW pay per view main event choices were because someone was contractually entitled to main event a pay per view.

Backlash 2018 was main evented by a regular-ass, non-title singles match between Samoa Joe and Roman Reigns that was famously crapped on by the live crowd and had fans streaming toward the exits the second the referee counted three to end the match.
That said, it's not like there was an abundance of quality alternatives. The world championship matches on the card were a rematch of the Alexa Bliss-Nia Jax match from WrestleMania 34, Carmella defending her newly-won title against Charlotte Flair, and Shinsuke Nakamura and AJ Styles kicking each other in the dick.

I wonder how many weird WCW pay per view main event choices were because someone was contractually entitled to main event a pay per view. I went and looked at every PPV between Bash at the Beach 1994 (Hogan's arrival) and Bash at the Beach 2000 (Hogan's last WCW appearance). Whenever Hogan had a show off, Savage usually got the main event. When Savage was "suspended" in 1996, The Giant main evented (and was WCW World Champion at the time). Sting got a few main events in 1998, even with Hogan and Savage working elsewhere on the show. Goldberg main evented Halloween Havoc and Starrcade, while Bret and DDP worked World War 3. In 1999, Nash got more main events when Hogan and Goldberg were both injured. Benoit and Sid main evented Souled Out 2000, which is a weird outlier for PPV main events between 1994 and 2000. When Jarrett won the title, he main evented against DDP, Arquette, Nash and Booker T. Booker T main evented against Jarrett, Nash and Steiner. Steiner main evented against Sid, Jarrett, Animal, Nash and DDP. So it's not unreasonable to believe that Savage and Nash probably had PPV main events in their contracts, which just happened to coincide with Hogan's movie schedule. Sting's two main events in 1998 may have been empty gestures by Hogan for cutting his World Title reign short. Flair got a random main event in 1997 after returning from shoulder surgery and we know the sorted history between him and Hogan, so that may have also been a political move. Goldberg probably had main events in his contract, since he and Hall main evented Souled Out 1999 in the Taser match, and against Kronik at Halloween Havoc 2000, over Booker T/Steiner for the World Title.

In general Backlash 2018 is just an all-time f***ing terrible PPV. The only remotely redeemable thing about it is Seth / Miz and that's the opener.

Similarly, WrestleWar '89 was main evented by Eddie Gilbert and Rick Steiner versus Dan Spivey and Kevin Sullivan ... two matches after Ric Flair defeated Ricky Steamboat to regain the World Heavyweight Championship.

The very first Royal Rumble was main evented by a 2 out of 3 falls match between the Young Stallions and the Islanders, which the Islanders win in 2 straight falls.
