Christian Cage vs Darby Allin for the TNT title main eventing WrestleDream last year. It pretty much had to with Edge debuting afterwards but without that knowledge it's a very underwhelming PPV main event. I think it being a title match and 2-out-of-3 falls elevated it a bit. Danielson/Sabre could've gone on last, I guess, but there was nothing wrong with having a title match go on last. Here's what I said at the time about that show: I voted 8. Scrap the four-way tag and the trios matches, in their place add another women's match to the show, and never allow Moxley to do commentary again, and this PPV would be a 9 verging on 10. Cage/Allin 2/3 falls is probably my favourite AEW PPV main event this year. Christian Cage is AEW's MVP. He always delivers.

Great American Bash 1991: Rick Steiner vs. Arn Anderson and Paul E. Dangerously in a steel cage. It was supposed to be a tag team match, with Missy Hyatt teaming with Steiner, but the Maryland State Athletic Commission wouldn't allow a woman to wrestle men. Yes, the actual commission that governs legitimate sports forced a scripted event to be changed, all because wrestling was still trying to be legit in 1991...

The very first Royal Rumble was main evented by a 2 out of 3 falls match between the Young Stallions and the Islanders, which the Islanders win in 2 straight falls. But that wasn't a PPV, it aired as a TV special, similar to Saturday Night's Main Event.

Yeah, Royal Rumble 88 seems like it was originally booked as a SNME, then they souped up the 20 man battle royal and moved it to a Sunday afternoon. Funny enough, SNME always seemed to put their 'main attraction' in the direct middle of each show, since the last match would be airing very late on the East coast and most fans would be in bed by then.

It was booked to F with The Bunkhouse Stampede ppv, a show so bad it Fd itself. If anything the main event was the Hogan/ Andre contract signing.

Sort of like how the original The Main Event special featured a final bout (that got cut off!) of Strike Force vs The Hart Foundation.

Yeah almost all SNME shows had the Main Event (usually the Hogan Match or Savage/Warrior when they were WWF Champ) to air at around 12PM ET/11PM CT. And usually the 2nd biggest match would open. I think they assumed that they would lose a big chunk of the audience halfway through the show given the timeslot.

AWA's only PPV, 1988's SuperClash III, was completely built around the title unification match between Jerry Lawler and Kerry Von Erich. Yet for some reason they chose to end the show on The Rock n Roll Express vs. The Stud Stable. It might have worked if the show was in Memphis or something, but I can't imagine a Chicago crowd caring about a match like that, especially considering how deflated they must've been after the result of title match.
