Not entirely sure anyone's ever topping Halloween Havoc 1998 Sting. Though post-Brock feud 2013 Punk is up there.

This is indeed spot on for Bret. Dude never looked happy, confident, comfortable, or anything to be in WCW. I think despite what happened during the last 8-9 months in the fed, he knew that was his home. Home of the Hitman character, but also if Bret himself. You could argue that if his booking was what it should have been in WCW then he would have been happy, and that would have shown in how he carried himself, but I don't think that is the case. He didn't want to leave the fed.

Curt Hennig in XWF right after WCW's closure, internally begging for WWF to make that perfect call.

I think more importantly his personal life was collapsing, his marriage was ending, family members were dying or being shitheads to try and get in the WWF's good graces and his friends had started dropping dead at a young age.

You're right, I tend to forget personal/family stuff he was going through - besides Owen, of course - alongside his shitty booking. I do wonder, though, Bret must have known he was going to play second fiddle to Hogan, Flair, and maybe Sting, but he must have been surprised at just how badly he was getting booked right out the gate.

You gotta figure too that Bret was adjusting to a reality where he was no longer indispensible. WWF didn't need him and WCW's main event picture was overcrowded before he got there.

Bad booking wasn't a new thing, Bret had been screwed around since 1993, they didn't strap a rocket to him, he won the belt at a non televised event, lost it so Hogan could win the belt and never defend it or appear on TV. The WWF returned to him when other people didn't do better so he spent a lot of time pratting around with guys like the Patriot and Jerry Lawler, while Vince kept trying with newer toys.

I was going to say that in his last year in the fed his stock had gone way up and he was getting treated and booked much better, but actually his last two PPV matches before Survivor Series we're against The Patriot, with HBK main eventing against Undertaker. Even him winning the Title at Summerslam was overshadowed by the resulting Shawn and Undertaker feud. Yeah, no kidding he was miserable, all things considered.

Ax. Survivor Series. That is all. Good one! It's like he knew even then, he'd never work for WWF again. It's been almost 34 years and other than Classic toys, he's done no business with WWF/E. Though that was probably a deal with the toy companies specifically. Hercules after SID powerbombs and pins him.
Totally unprofessional by Hercules and he acted similar in the battle royal, trying to hang on while Hogan was trying hard to get him out of there. Moondog Spot did the same thing with Koko B. Ware on his last day. Took a finisher from Koko, got pinned and immediately got up. Hercules should have been grateful. He had a six year run with most of that really not doing anything noteworthy. He never improved. WWF had little to work with but gave him two of the most important managers in Blassie and Heenan. Gave him a big angle and face turn, gave him a heel turn after the face turn amounted to nothing. Given how he reacted in that Sid match, it's no wonder he and Roma worked well together. Roma probably channeled his inner Hercules in his match with Alex Wright.
