The original MK really stunk, and I spent probably hundreds of dollars (parent's money) on the damn game. I played it again recently, and I was shocked at how bad it was. Any games you've played recently that you loved as a kid that you realize stink?

Yeah, I'll give that to you. It was the Fatality gimmick that really sold that game. Back in 93 that was a big deal.

All old games suck compared to new ones
Tekken for example was great and amazing but after playing Tekken 5 the originals are a piece of crap

All old games suck compared to new ones And that's why retro collections and the Wii Virtual Console rake in hundreds of thousands of dollars. Because they old games suck. Sure. Jed Shaffer ~I'll take Super Mario World and Phantasy Star II over Final Fantasy XII and Super Mario Galaxy anyday.

MK1 had great mystique, good storylines, and neat characters. But yeah, the gameplay sucked, expecially compared to Street Fighter 2 (it's main competition).

Saying all old games suck compared to new ones is stupid. The first Mortal Kombat however, mreh. Though I'll take Resident Evil over Resident Evil 3 or Veronica.

The first Mortal Kombat is remembered fondly because of how much controversy it stirred up, it was the first game to really do that.
As for the quality OF game, the best Mortal Kombat in arcades was Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and then it all went downhill. Nothing compares to UMK3. The new console games are fun, but they're nowhere near the fun that was had with the 2D originals.

i like old games way better. I play my NES and Super NES way more than other stuff. I just got back into playing Rygar and Tiny Toons for NES, those were sweet.

I really thought Sonic's Adventure for the Dreamcast was ok since it was the first Sonic game testing the 3D Waters back in 1999. Playing it again in 2007 I know every Sonic game after Sonic & Knuckles sucked.

MK1 does suck now... But MK2 definitely still holds up pretty well...

I still play MK1 to this day but yeah I won't lie, a lot of it is for nostalgia reasons.
But I absolutely will defend MK1 because it was the first game (to my knowledge) to feature juggle combos. It didn't have nearly as many juggles as MK2 did, but there definitely were a few. I think that for this reason, MK1 was a lot more innovative than it often gets credit for.

I can't play that many new games... the gameplay just isn't the same. The game I play the most? Either Mat Mania or Mania Challenge for MAME.

I remember Mat Mania! I never could figure out how to do the People's Elbow in it.
