Oh I've heard of them too. I called Beckham a douchebag....not "Beckham is the only douchebag in Football." But then again, I'm a Gridiron Football man....or American Football........or mother truckin FOOTBALL...... Not saying you were, but like I said, I don't understand how anyone can call him a douchebag when you have those sort of guys running around. Hell, I can't understand why people call Beckham a douche at all. Why I call him one? Remember that dippy haircut of his? Really, he looked and reminded me OF a douche.

I never really did dig soccer. (though I played it for two years. We won the gold once. Thanks John Goldsberry!) Beckham to me though seems too marketed or something. Like he's the only player in the world. Like MJ for soccer only less pristine. I don't know where you live, but over here, there are definatly more players than Beckham in the world. Heck, you could even say the most talked about figure is Barcelona star Ronadinho. Nothing wrong with that because the guy is damn well amazing. It's just for those on the outside, that's the only player they get real exposure to outside of World Cups and such. Like I said, that could be a reason people don't like the guy.

Ohio brother, not a very large window to the world here. The only soccer names I've ever heard more than once are Bechkham, Pele and Freddie Adu. The sports channels don't really devote any time to it even.

Remember SAN ANDREAS? "Soccer?!?! I don't like YOUR game because we aren't good AT IT!" I hear that a lot when I play Wii sports with friends.

The only soccer names I've ever heard more than once are Bechkham, Pele and Freddie Adu. The sports channels don't really devote any time to it even. Over here, you can pretty much find any type of soccer. Channel Five shows South American football, Bravo shows Italian, Sky Sports shows the Premiership and Spanish Leagues etc. I know there's the Foc Soccer Channel over there, but that probably goes to a few homes so I can really understand your situation. Heck, I can somehow justify people not liking Beckham over there because he's the only player playing right now who is a big name and is going over there. Adu was a big name in US Soccer for awhile, I remember. Every European club around wanted the guy. We (Arsenal) were linked with him several times. Then he signed for Real Salt Lake and.....well, haven't heard anything ever since. It's unfortunate, but maybe he isn't ready yet for the big leagues. Maybe he never will, who knows. Having said that, yeah, America needs it's own stars to build up. The thing is, they do have thier own stars. Guys like Landon Donovan and people like them. Even Freddie Adu (If he's still playing since, like I said, I haven't heard ANYTHING about him since a couple of years ago) They just need the exposure to get them up there. If Beckham can even do that, he's sort of succeeded in my view

This is only big news in Europe. I still won't give two s***s about soccar no matter what. Espically with real football starting in less then two months. "Real" football? LMAO!!!! ;D Yes, I'll watch if Sky or anyone else are showing it. I would imagine LA will get stuffed by Chelsea, but it'd be worth watching nevertheless.

That's the strange thing about this whole thing, though. Only one channel has hopped on the MLS bandwagon and that's Five and even then, it doesn't really count because it's only, what, a series about Becks?
When Beckham got signed to Real Madrid, we suddenly got La Liga on our screens. I would have thought from the second Becks agreed the Galaxy deal, someone else would have done the same. Even someone like Setanta Sports.

Footballers naturally are leaner than say grid-iron or rugby players because of the nature of the game where one doesn't necessarily need to be hulking slab of muscle. Also having a stylish haircut and dressing in designer clothes makes business sense because they can gain endorsements and make their club look more professional and commercially friendly.

Nope. I don't think theres anything that could make me care about soccer in the least. I have an MLS team in my city, couldnt tell you if their good or not. We had an arena soccer team, I went to some games. Boring as hell.
I played soccer for 3 or 4 years, did not enjoy it at all. I didnt have fun until basketball or football season came along.
I really tried to get into soccer during a few of the World Cups, I just couldnt. Couldnt watch more then 20 min of a game without falling asleep. So I dont see some supposed superstar coming over to take a lot of money changing my feelings.

MLS was treated as a joke over here, even by ESPN, then all of a sudden Beckham comes over and ESPN is pushing this thing like smack.
I MIGHT watch. The only time I watch soccer is if my friends still in high school have games and during the World Cup. And even then, the only games I watched all the way through were the Sweden games.

What cracks me up is the US thinking this is a huge blow to the UK when people really couldn't care less.
