What cracks me up is the US thinking this is a huge blow to the UK when people really couldn't care less. That "couldn't care less" thing is a two-way street apparently.

After the Beckham signing by LA, the Chicago Fire struck back by getting one of the biggest jerks in Mexican soccer, Cuauhtemoc Blanco. (When it was annouced on the web-site, they called him "Mexico's Bad Boy Of Soccer".) They're pushing the Chicago match in October as being a huge international affair; even to the point where you need a partial season-ticket plan just to get tickets to the game. (I'd like to go, honestly.)
Differences with soccer in America, 1977 to 2007:
Back then, the NASL paid big bucks for soccer stars overseas like Pele, Giorgio Chiniglia and Franz Beckenbauer (still a legend if you ever followed the Chicago Sting), but lack of revenue put a lot of teams in the gutter. This time around, MLS is a little more careful about wasting money for international stars, trying to use them to groom Americans.
And this time around, there is a more pronounced Hispanic population willing to go to games. MLS isn't going anywhere.
If you're somewhat interested in soccer, even just a little bit, look for the documentary "Once In A Lifetime". ESPN Classic plays it once in a while and it fascinated me, just seeing how they built soccer up into this huge draw (okay, mainly about the Cosmos), and then flamed out when things got too international.

A lot of people argue that American's suck at soccer.
While that is true, there's a reason for it. See, I think that we could have a great soccer team here in the States and compete for the World Cup every four (or is it three?) years.
However, the problem isn't that we lack the great athletes... it's that the vast majority of our great athletes do not choose to play soccer. Most of our great athletes play football, baseball, basketball, and even up north you can say hockey. They're not interested in soccer.
Over here, soccer is something most of us play when we're little. It's kind of like an introduction to organized sports for American youth. And then, if we decide we like sports, we go play one of the four, aforementioned sports that is more popular in our country.

Only because Beckham is with Posh Spice. Now, if he were married to Ginger/Geri Halliwell - then more people would care. OK, maybe just me.

Hey, you support an udnerdog team, I supprot an underdog team! High five! Beckham is good, but he is over his peak, and overrated. Don't give a crap about American soccer, don't give a hsit abotu Chelsea, so I won't be watching. Oh, and real football= English football. We invented it before 'American' football, so therefore football is football, not soccer. And American football is American football/gridiron, not 'real football'. What terrible teams do you support? I support Suckingham Forest, otherwise known as Nottingham Forest. Well, here's a small hint: Last season we went 19 games without a win. And Beckham does have talent, but he is not the same player he was 2 or 3 years ago. Having said that, when McClaren played him his first time, he was England MOTM in my view. He has good games and bad games, when he's good he's excellent, when he's bad he's atrocious. And as for his personality, from everything I've heard, he's a little dim, but he's an nice guy. I'd certainly put him above Rooney, Rio, Cole and others as a person. Funny isn't it- In the UK football is on the same level as American Football in the US, but American football in the UK is about equal to soccer in the US. Polar opposites.

The funny thing is despite the constant attempts to 'make America get soccer' they seem to get it more than the Brits get American football. I know a few friends who watch the NFL (I could care less) but generally the U.K doesn't give 2 s***s. Same with Baseball.
Do we play American football at school? No. But Americans are taught Soccer. The real problem lies with the Brits imo, just because America speaks our language we have to shove all of our culture down their throats.
I know i'm going against the Brit stereotype, but in reality, that's the problem.

Football/Soccer is an International sport. smurfin' Brits think they own it ^ I don't think i once said it was ours, but it is in our culture like it is with Holland, Italy or Brazil etc. And we invented it, apparently, so can you blame me?

I'll watch, but then again I usually watch because it's on Free TV and I'm a referee so I watch how the refs call the games.
I know I'm in the extreme minority of American's who like soccer. I'm also watching to Tour de France right now and I haven't even seen a thread on that.
I'm use to the soccer bashing because "real football" fans usually are some of the biggest pieces of crap on earth. There area good chunk of fans who care though, but I really get tired of the "soccer is for pussies" crap. I've broken my fingers (and continued to play as keeper), got kicked in the head and knocked out, been cleeted several times and much more.
But with MLS trying to acquire more foreign players to make the league better, the league itself has gotten tons better over the past few years. Not as good as the EPL, Spanish League, etc, but it's not that bad. The MLS won't implode like the NASL. The MLS is smarter and are taking things with more caution. They don't revolve around TV ratings like the NASL eventually did, which killed them.
Oh yeah, the 2006 World Cup final had more American viewers than the 2006 World Series last year.

MLS is such a borefest Yes I see the irony as I proudly support a struggling league 1 club. Hey, you support an udnerdog team, I supprot an underdog team! High five! I'm not a big fan of Soccer and am from the U.S., but you can't say it's not "real" football. It freaking came first.

I don't like the dude. Bend It Like Beckham got a good run in theatres, while Shaolin Soccer got a limited run. Some how that's Beckham's fault. I find it funny since the word "Foot" is in the name. using your foot is done only a few times in the pigskin.

No sir. I can't stand baseball because I find it boring. Soccer for the same reason. It's only popular because you just need something round to play. I don't want towatch a 2hr 1-0 snoozefest.
