I'm not saying Halo is a terrible game... The "piece of crap series" part sort of gave that impression. Oh well, different strokes, I guess. Still (and this isn't necessarily directed at you), even if you think Halo is overrated doesn't mean that it is a bad game, just like the fact that I can't stand Metal Gear Solid or Resident Evil doesn't make them bad games.

Easy guys....
Let's all step back and put down the Koolaid on each side and really assess what the Halo series is.
First, it's not terrible. Secondly, it's not the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Halo is just a highly polished FPS on a console that seems to place a large emphasis of its library on that specific genre, with a huge advertising budget spent on this specific game. It takes what's been done many times before on PC games and puts them together on an easily accessible console game that doesn't require updating things like graphics cards, etc. It doesn't push the boundaries in anyway, but we can't fault a game for not redefining gaming.
Simply put, it's designed to appeal to as many people as possible and sell as many games possible by just putting the best of what's been before all together in one package, with slightly generic elements to ensure its still accessible to a huge audience, and an advertising campaign that dwarfs a large number of feature films.
So, at the end of the day, it's a good game, with a very strong online component that does what a ton of games have done before it, but puts it together in a nice little bundle with a hype machine behind it that could sell ketchup popsicles to Eskimos in white gloves....
I will vouche for the guy who said he saw a ton of Halo 3 games yesterday, as I was at a Best Buy to pick up a movie and there was a table set up with at least 150 copies of the game with two guys sitting behind it, looking bored, and no one coming up to get a copy. It's obviously done it's damage, but that's what I saw.

"That sounds great! Just one question" "What the hell is a Halo 3?!" "Pick it up at Wal-Mart!" ;D

I went over to my buddies house to watch Raw on Monday and he said there was a guy waiting for the game to go on sale at midnight since like four pm. He said there was no lines, just the one guy and they told him-- dude we have over a hundred sixty of these, you don't necessarily have to wait the full eight hours since there's no one else here, he apparently said ' nah, I've waited before, it's cool.' I can't imagine doing that. I agree. And I don't want to start a debate here, but in my opinion the Halo games are not THAT good. Yes they are fun, and worth a buy. However, they don't come near the end all, be all, "I have to wait hours upon hours in line and take off work and school to play this" levels of goodness that they are hyped as. I've got to agree with Agent on this one. I played it the other day and I've failed to see what was so mind blowing about it. Keep in mind that I had played the other two. I mean, I really can't understand it. Give me Rainbow Six any day is all I'm saying. Oh well. If only this many people went out and bought Metroid Prime 3. *sigh*

To everyone who keeps touting Halo's sales numbers as some kind of empirical evidence of quality ...
Britney Spears' first album sold 14 million copies.
Jed Shaffer ~Numbers mean nothing.

Oh well. If only this many people went out and bought Metroid Prime 3. *sigh* Well that will probably still happen, it will just take longer. The way I see it, out of the 12 million 360 owners, the ones who care about the game have already bought it. Most of the other people will either rent/borrow it from friends. So sales have pretty much topped out for it as far as major revenue goes.

Ahhh, numbers do mean something, it means it sold a lot of copies. No one is saying sales = quality, people are saying sales = a lot of people actually like the series and are willing to put money down to prove it. People can say how crappy and overrated it is all day long, but at the end of the day a great deal of people felt that the Halo series was good enough to go out and buy and enjoy. Halo2 didn't become the best selling Console FPS game ever for no reason.

I haven't started campaign mode yet but multiplayer is not that great. It's probably because we were only able to play two maps. The Gears Of War multiplayer is more entertaining.

Ahaha, yes Halo is just a crappy game with nothing but hype to keep it afloat, this is why 3 years after Halo 2 came out it's still the most played game on Xbox Live. The 7 million people that got Halo 2 are just too stupid to understand how terrible that game is, and the 1.5 million people that played Halo 3 online yesterday are a bunch of suckers. I guess. Actually, sorry Erisi, but there is one flaw in your argument here. Halo 2 was only the stop played XBL game for 2 years. In 2006 Gears of War kicked it out of the top spot, and now Halo 3 will kick Gears out of the top.

I went to Best Buy yesterday looking to buy Medal of Honor: Airborne...and what happens? They have no MOH: Airborne and like 150 copies of Halo 3 sitting on a table, with noone even looking at them...overpriced, overhyped, overplayed peice of crap series... That has somehow had the biggest opening weekend for a videogame ever. Sure, you can have your opinion on a series, but the numbers do not lie. I believe this is the part where you take the crow, and eat it. Not just biggest opening for a video game. In ONE DAY it made more money than the biggest grossing film of all time did in its first THREE days.

I bought it around six yesterday and played it for three hours. I haven't really played it much, but it's good.

Honestly, let us have our Halo series. Halo is America's Dragon Quest series, meaning we line up in long lines for the midnight release and almost everyone buys it. What I'm referring to is in Japan, Dragon Quest is their most popular series. It is so popular that the government had to tell Square-Enix they couldn't launch DQ8 on a week day, as with the previous games so many people would take off from school and work to line up for the game and buy it and play it. Halo is like that here...it sort of is our symbol of gaming, so even if it isn't the best series ever, let it be and let us enjoy it. What you're refering to is actually madden.

That being said, that guy went a little far with the "piece of crap" and all that other stuff line. I mean I don't care for Halo nearly as much as everyone else, but it's not that bad.

Halo didn't suck. You want an overrated game that sucks, look at Doom 3. Halo/2/3 are great games.

I don't think Doom 3 is rated high enough to be perfectly honest... but as for the Halo series I've always thought the first one was an ok game, that was massively overyhyped. The second one annoyed me as they didn't feel it worth the time to actually give the game an ending... and I have no interest in multiplayer because most of the people I've played online are annoying as hell. I don't know if I'm gonna get 3, but if anyone thought this wasn't gonna sell you're crazy.

Half-Life is da bomb on FPS. I pretty much agree. I played Halo 2 a few days before I played Half Life 2 for the first time, and I basically never even bothered to play Halo 2 again. Of course I know a huge component of the Halo series is it's online multi-player and I don't play games online, so a huge amount of its appeal is lost on me. Halo w/o multi-player = a very polished slightly above average shooter.
