Guitar Hero makes my eyes go funny. I thought somebody had spiked my drink when I played it. SAME HERE! What the hell? Me to. I don't notice it while I'm playing, but the minute I look away towards the floor, ceiling, clock, et cetera everything is all distorted and bending and weird looking. I don't get the appeal of Guitar Hero... Instead of spending hours bashing buttons on a guitar-shaped gamepad, "learning" a song, you could buy/rent a real guitar and spend the same amount of time learning how to play for real. The sense of accomplishment and joy I feel when I'm "butchering" my favourite riffs on my guitar is 100x bigger than the one I'd feel by "playing" through the whole Guitar Hero songbook at the hardest difficulty level. Would you rather be a top class Madden 08 player or a regular for your high-school/college team? I've already been over this in this thread.

I was huge on GH when 1 and 2 were out, but once Rock the Eighties hit and the note structure was so blatantly horrible, I kind of lost my interest in the series. When GH3 and Rock Band hit, I gave both a whirl and was surprised at how much more fun the notes and structure of songs were in Rock Band then GH3. It felt like you were playing the songs again, not going through the motions on a plastic guitar. I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that Harmonix were the brains behind the outfit and, even though they get crap for joining up with EA, they're much better at making a fun game then their counterparts.
As for why even bother playing, I play guitar and enjoy this because I can do it with my friends. I enjoy it much more for the social aspect of the game then the fact I can memorize which little keys to hit on expert level and think it makes me an actual star on guitar. It's definately a game that's better with friends than sitting alone and trying to master on your own.

Not everyone has the time or ability to play a real guitar. Plus, I just like sitting down and seeing if I can make it through some of my favorite songs in the game. I'm only able to beat it on medium and I'm just now learning to play on hard. Expert is something that I know I'll never be able to do. I don't have the time or patience to do it.

Why are people "hating" this now? It's just a fun game to play - nothing more, nothing less. Once you've got the basics down, there's nothing overly complicated and it's probably the best game to play with friends. It's the video game version of Twister, except with GH, you can't have an excuse to bend over chicks. Meh, seems like everything that's remotely popular is instantly hated now.

Welcome To The Internet. And I actually like the song choices. Maybe it's because I'm a huge fan of most of the bands that are featured. Christ, there's a Tenacious D song in there! What else do you people need?

after actually playing guitar hero 3 i can honestly say i'm disappointed. i mean, all the basics are there, but theres something about it that just feels... off. i really dislike the fact that you can only hammer on CERTAIN notes. that totally kills it for me. when you're playing a damn solo and the notes are flying at you, it's hard for me to focus on notes that are lit up to know when i can hammer on. that aspect really ruined the game for me. the track listing is okay (better than the first one... but EONS behind the listing for the second one)... i have still yet to play rock band, but i really hope it's as much better than GH3 as everyone says it is. otherwise i'm going to be disappointed.

I could totally see how it would be fun playing with a buncha friends.

Well, after mooching off my friends and playing Rock Band (I'm the only one who can score 100% on vocals for most of the songs on hard), I'll say Guitar Hero feels pretty empty right now.
But to be real honest, Guitar Hero doesn't have the feeling of self-gratification when compared to playing real guitar. Sure, Guy A can play "One" on Expert, but can he even noodle through "St. Anger" (Metallica's easiest song to play, just a bunch of chords) in front of 50 people? It's good finger training, but playing Guitar Hero does not make you automatically good at guitar. I think the South Park episode pretty much exemplified this.
