I've always felt Fastball (especialy their first album "All the Pain Money Can Buy") were HORRENDOUSLY underrated. THey had another album?!?

Some of these mentions are a bit...ridiculous. Pixies are seen by millions of people as being amazing, now at least. Weezer's debut album went multi-platinum. The MC5 are recognised by many as among the originators of punk, and Television are seen as one of the bands who recreated it.
For me it's Barenaked Ladies.
Their last two albums (really two parts of one album), particularly Barenaked Ladies Are Me, were breathtaking melancholy pop masterpieces, but they will always be seen as fat white guys doing comedy raps.

I'm in huge agreement on the Barenaked Ladies. I haven't heard their last couple of albums...but everything I have heard by them is SO awesome. I love them.

Not a "band" really but Jello Biafra with DOA put out an album that I rank right up there with his best Dead Kennedy stuff..and everyone knows they are my all time favorite band.
Thought Riot is another overlooked band. '
I'll disagree about bad brains..unless you mean it in a mainstream sense.
I think most hardcore/punks (and others) appreciate them as much as they deserve to be.

You guys obviously don't live in their native country of Canada, where they're cultural icons like Bret Hart and Neil Young.

Keane Seriously, their what Radiohead should have turned into after The Bends. Eh? So you would have preferred Radiohead to release standard, unoriginal indie pop music your parents like to play at dinner parties to prove they're still with it instead of OK Computer?

I don't really consider record sales to equal appreciation. Even though the Pixies were amazing and influential, today are merely a footnote except with the most hardcore of fans. They could easily be on the same level notoriety as say R.E.M., but they aren't. Weezer was a very influential band in the early 90's, and really started paving the way for the transition from grunge to indy rock. Yet they'll always be remembered for "that Happy Days video*" and Hash Pipe. *Buddy Holly, while a great tune, isn't, IMO, even in the top 10 Weezer tracks.

Didn't Pixies headline Reading or something in 2004? Because I'm pretty sure it's not just the hardcore fans any more as far as Pixies go.
And hey, I agree that Weezer are mucho underrated. They are one of my favourite bands. In fact, Blue is my favourite album ever. But they are by a wide margin not the most underrated band ever.

This band... I'm willing to bet none of you have ever heard of them. Well, you deserve congratulations for posting a band I've never even heard the name of...I can safely say I didn't dig it, but they're probably underrated simply because most people haven't heard of them at all

I'm kind of stuck on this one, I can't decide If Velvet Underground is underated or not. I would say they're underrated. You hardly ever here there stuff on the radio or basically get as much exposure as they should.

A cookie for me. I like those guys and got a few of their albums. Thought I'd just share them with the world. Of course it's debatable whether or not it's for the better.

uhh I hate them, especially Johnny Rotten. Good call. I would say that the other way around, with Bad Brains being overrated and Pistols, especially John Lydon being underrated. Lydon was also the brains behind PiL, which was an even better band. The most underrated band of all time though is Red Crayola. Seriously, Underrated? Rolling Stone put them on 100 best artists of all time and put "Anarchy in the UK" in the best songs of all time. Here's another terribly underated Punk band The Hippos

Yeah, they are hugely praised yet there music is not played on the radio. maybe because they have songs about Lobotomies and Drugs.
