Well, TNA just signed him for 2-3 more years, so odds are they have some kind of plan for him. The question is, what's the plan?
Where does Christian go from here, storyline-wise? They milked the "Christian as devious cheating heel champ" angle for all it's worth, I think - they can't have him win the belt back and start all over again any time soon. They could keep his persona unchanged and just have him chase/contend for the belt for a while, but like I said, they can't really have him win it, so that seems like a dead end.
I don't know about anyone else, but I actually really liked Christian as an underdog face during his early days in TNA. He's been a heel most of his career, and it was a nice change, and not just in a "quick changeup with no staying power before we go back to the normal state of affairs" kind of way. He seems to still get pretty good pops even as a heel, now that he's lost the belt I think the time is ripe for a face turn.
Who else does TNA have as a main-event face?
Sting isn't a long-term solution and really needs to be a special occasion guy, like TNA's version of The Undertaker, as other people have suggested.
Jeff Jarrett? Whole list of reasons why not.
The former top X Division faces like Daniels and Styles are heels now (although A.J.'s promos have gotten better of late and he could work as a tweener).
Samoa Joe is closer to a face than a heel at the moment, but he works a lot better as a demolishing (not to say monster) heel in my view.
Abyss is probably going to be more of a "nice guy" when he comes back, but they can't totally de-monster him without completely killing the character (although the guy is such a complete Kane ripoff they may as well stick with the Kane arc and ruin him, too).
Kurt Angle doesn't seem likable enough to be a main-event babyface for long to me (I would like him a lot better as a heel), though I know I could be (probably am) in the minority there. We all know they're going to put the strap on Angle at some point, and soon, they've been building up to it since he debuted and they already teased it at Sacrifice, but whether that's as a face or a heel in the long run could go either way.
The problem is: if you're going to turn Christian face again, how are you going to do it? Who are you going to have him feud with? What's the angle?
You could have his henchmen (Thomko, Styles, etc.) turn on him now that he can't give them title shots and say it made him realize he has no real friends or allies and do some self-evaluation or something like that. They could also play something between him and Sting and/or Jarrett similar to the stuff when Sting won the belt from JJ, about the hunger for the belt corrupting people and whether it's worth it.

I don't think the heel card has been played out yet. His role has diminished due to the loss of the title and lack of air time on impact (another example of the two hour need) I think he could stay on in that mode for a long time. Flair did it, HHH did it, Debiase did it.

Flair did it, HHH did it, Debiase did it. Like I said, I agree they can get some more mileage out of him as a heel contending for the belt, but I'm not really sure it would work to ever have him actually WIN it as a heel again at any point in the near future. I guess the parallel question to this is: who's TNA's #1 face going to be?

Eventually there's going to be Angle/Joe III for the title. I'm guessing Joe will be the face.

TNA's #1 face? Hmmmm......well a homegrown talent would be better but I think they will likely put Angle in there due to the money he costs TNA

Considering that hes their only main event heel atm, I don't see him turning face in the foreseeable future, nor do I personally want to see him do it. I love him in the position hes in, and I think that Cage is one of the few guys that TNA has used correctly.

Don't feel bad, they pulled the trigger on all 3 of those so fast people tend to forget it.

If TNA is smart they will NEVER EVER make Christian a face again.
I am Christian's number 1 fan but he SUCKS as a face. The fans became indifferent to him when he was champion (Remember that promo he had before a title defense where he asked WHOSE THE CHAMP and noone answered)
He just isn't meant to be a face. He is terrible at it.

I never had the impression he lost the fans as a face champ. As for my question of who TNA's top face will be... It depresses me to think about, but if I had to bet on what I actually think WILL happen (as opposed to what I WANT to happen), I'd say Kurt will become TNA's version of Cena and have a mind-numbingly long title reign as an utterly colorless golden boy with no persona or gimmick beyond being the face champ who wins all the time.

His future is the same future of Road Dogg and Billy Gunn. He's gonna bash his buddy Edge on TNA.com, but he's just gonna call him Adam. He's pissed that when Adam was messing around with Amy, he didn't get in on any action, hence he could have made lots of money feuding with Matt cause he'd have slept with Amy too! He then goes on a powertrip saying it's ok cause he did sleep with Trish even if it was only a storyline. And yes he's gonna start calling himself "The Rated NC-17 Dream" Christian Cage. He's gonna say he can whip John's ass anyday, and challenge John and Adam to a 3 way dance to determine who the true world champ really is. Him and Tomko are gonna drive up to Titan Towers and scream at the writers for not pushing "Captain Charisma" to the moon. But Christian takes a wrong turn and ends up in a really bad neighborhood. A black guy carjacks Christian and demands that he pay for his autograph. Christian's scared to death and gives him 20 bucks. The man signs a piece of paper "Virgil". Christian looks in shock as the man takes off his mask and it is indeed Virgil! At this point Virgil begs Christian for a job cause he's missing child support payments. Christian takes him along on his quest to confront his ex-best friend Adam and John.
And yes there will be a hostile takeover cause Christian, Tomko, and Virg will buy WWE house show tickets. Virg will stupidly but the cheapest seats so they had to sit all the way up top. Christian's yelling at Virg saying he wanted front row. They enjoy the show. Christian gives a WTF look to the camera when IC Champ Santino Morella comes out saying he won the belt by being a fan right? Why don't I come out of the crowd and challenge this immigrant right now? Will Santino Morella accept Christian's challenge? You'll just have to wait until next weeks TNA IMPACT to find out!!!

Since when did TNA believe in having a #1 face?
It's gonna be like 80 people in the main event scene like always, with nonsensical heel and face turns all over the place.
