a lot of it had that "midcard veteran getting a chance to shine" vibe to it.

He would never be a long term champion because he has'nt the sports entertainment factor or promo skills that is required for a lengthy run on top of the WWE. I would see him more as a transitional champ like Bret Hart. Two of the most underrated things about Bret Hart were the facts that he had pretty decent promo skills and had a TON of charisma. He wasn't exactly a robot out there like Benoit. Yet, for some odd reason, nowadays people like to think of him as a bland technical wrestler. That couldn't be further from the truth. Still, the best way to book Benoit would've been to book him as a "fighting champion" like they did for Bret during his first reign. I agree, Chris is not a long term guy you can build a company around as champion. But, I think using him as a transitional champion a few times and using him to make guys he was passing the belt to look good (kind of like Angle did) wouldn't have been too bad of an idea. It's what good in ring workers like Benoit excel at, making other guys look good whether they win or lose. Keeping both wrestlers over. So yeah, he should have just gotten a few "transitional" champion reigns, instead of his summer-long "Thankyou" reign of 2004.
