I often read people stating that his run was very underwhelming. I wasn't around for this era, so I would like to know what made it so bad. It had to be pretty bad considering people had been BEGGING for Benoit to be on top ever since the late 90s. Then he gets it and it seems some people are just like "eh".
What was the problem?

It didn't generate intreast because they didn't have any legitmate heels to face off against and was still basically all about Evolution. Basically HHH still made Benoit look like crap and made him look better. Thats why it failed, it was Hunter's fault it failed.

The focus of RAW at that time was on Triple H and not the champion. To be fair Benoits lack of mic skills probably hurt him too but they never really focused on him at the time and instead he was playing second fiddle to a Triple H/Eugene feud. I think that is what annoyed people about his title run.

It played second-fiddle to the exciting main event of HHH vs Eugene for the duration of his reign, that's pretty much why.

It was a shame because he could've been a great champion who would take on all comers and been match of the night week in/week out. Sadly triple H's feud with a mentally challenged wrestler and the "4 horsemen in all but name" Evolution were given more TV time than the champ. Still though Evolution did have kick ass entrance music.

Shawn Vs. Triple H not only main eventing the PPV's while Benoit was champ, but also inserting themselves into his matches to deliberately take the focus off of Benoit and keep it on themselves kinda pissed me off.

Everything that needed to be said has been said.
I will say this for the hell of it: The image of Benoit coming out with both the WHC and tag team title ruled!!!!

"THERE'S NO CRYING IN WRESTLING!"
Yeah...that's what really ruined it to me, the sight of The Titantron showing Benoit and Regal standing above a beaten Eugene, crying, with Triple H mocking them in the ring
Bad stuff

It made those belts look like garbage and buried tag teams on the roster. I hated it with Benoit and I hated it with Cena. Why would a World Champion bother going for other belts. What also pissed me off was When HHH unified the IC Belt, that killed the belt and hasn't recoverd since, maybe it will with Santino Marella but with the Tag Titles they look like total crap right now.

Your right I still have some of the tag matches he had with Edge on VHS, and would mark out when during Benoit's entrance would have a belt on each shoulder! If only they would have let him win the IC belt during this time that would have been amazing.

While I personally enjoyed it, I see other people's frustration. Much like Jericho's reign, HHH ended up being the main focus.
Benoit did get one of the best matches out of Kane I've seen him have though, and the HHH matches were all good.
I don't have nearly as big a problem with Benoit's reign as I do Jericho's. Benoit's was pretty cool with me.

At the very least, in defense of Triple H during this period, he took some time to work with younger guys on the side, those being Eugene, Shelton and Tajiri. At the time, all those guys were over!

Yeah it never really felt like Benoit was gonna have the belt for any decent amount of time, so it made his run not as interesting. It was the same with Goldberg to, you just knew that HHH was gonna get it again so why even care about it.
Another cool thing about Benoit run was HHH's "You taped out!" chants.

I don't have nearly as big a problem with Benoit's reign as I do Jericho's. Benoit's was pretty cool with me. I agree. Benoit was definitely treated better than Jericho. I was actually angrier with the company when Jericho had the title then I was when he didn't. Just because of the way his reign was treated. But get ready for the same thing to happen again. Triple H is going to return from the same (non-)career destroying injury as before. I love when he returns from those injuries. Her feels the need to actually destroy someone else's career.

Not to switch from Benoit to Jericho, but Jericho's wasn't as bad as you remember it. You're remembering his crappy angle for Wrestlemania against HHH. You're not remembering his awesome unification win, then going for 3 months with Austin and the Rock as contenders that kept being screwed. That was fun!
I though Benoit's was pretty fun too, but way too short.

I don't remember the first couple months of his reign, but I thought the summer of 04 was pretty good. Sure he wasn't the focus of the show, but he wasn't made to look like a joke during any part of his reign (Jericho was made to look like a joke several times if I remeber correctly)

Here's what I think!!!!!! (very important)
I think Benoit was the kind of guy that you wanted to see win the championship, but not necessarily be the champion. Huh?
I just mean, the guy deserves it so much. He works so hard, for many many years, stays in great shape, really respects the business, etc etc. So you feel that dammit, this guy deserves to be WWF champion and deserves to win it at no less an event than the Granddaddy of them all Wrestlemania.
But then, the morning after, you wake up and realize you have a bad champion on your hands. A deserving one, no question, a great guy and great wrestler, but a bad champion. Chris Benoit is not the level of entertainer required to be a good champion in the world of sports entertainment. So you give him a few months and take the belt off him.
If I had my way, he never would have gotten the belt to begin with. I don't believe the business should reward people who "deserve" to be champion, even if they do. All you end up with then is a bunch of unsatisfying title reigns.
