I just matched his match at No Way Out the other night. He is good in the ring. He can cut a good promo. He's just booked as such a generic wannabe badass right now.

Cena's "Rock-lite" promos do nothing for me. Cena is not the Rock, no matter how much WWE wishes it so. At least Cena doesn't have to reference monkey asses in every promo. You forgot: Pie,strudel, monkey nipples, hermaphrodites, money piss etc double standards are funny. Cena gets crapped on for his "dick jokes" and the Rock, who was 10 times worse, gets a free pass

However, there's no denying the Rock was 10 times more than Cena.

Rock also is the only person in WWF/E history that could make an entire crowd do what he wanted. I've always been ho-hum on Cena. Don't really hate, don't especially like. Find him boring to use on video games. I went to a house show two years ago and saw tons of kids going nuts for him and wearing his merchandise, so I understood why the WWE put the belt on him later that year. Still, I think an only semi-interrupted three year title reign is a bit much.

okay, sorry. Kids excluded. But explain to me, what there is to like about a slow, prodding along big man, who hits like Lashley talks, is injury prone and has never had a good match ever? I can think of plenty of good matches Cena has put on, but Batista? Batista is just balls. The man has no character whatsoever. Really, what is the difference if a kid or an older person likes a wrestler? They just do.

I don't care about "work-rate" it's not like you can measure it or anything.

You know what's funny? Cena goes out there and does exactly what he's told to do. I also believe this. I think Cena usually puts on the match he's expected to put on and cuts the promo he's expected to cut. The guy is capable of more, and he's better than what he shows us on TV, but it's not his fault; he's following orders. I only wish WWE would really let the man show us what he can do. And Cena's performance at ONS was amazing. He played off that crowd perfectly, and his every move during the match was staged to draw all that heat. You don't need to be the best technical worker when you have psychology as good as what he showed in that match. I don't understand the hatred about his ring work anyway. The guy ain't a Chris Benoit, but he sure as hell isn't a Giant Gonzales either. With that said, however, the gimmick is stale. And a title loss and heel turn might benefit him AND his storylines.

The problem is that his "serious" promos don't sound believable and his "funny" promos just aren't funny.
A heelish attitude and the "diss-raps" would be a welcome addition to his character.
Cut the military stuff too.

I don't care about "work-rate" it's not like you can measure it or anything. No, I'm pretty sure some smarks have a meter attatched to their TV which measures workrate. I've never seen one, but I hear workrate talked about so often on here, it must exist.

He's good, but the Undertaker and Michaels are really good, which make him look bad.

He can put on good matches, and when he has a backstage interview like he did tonight he can be damned entertaining. You can do a lot worse than John Cena. Just not a hell of a lot worse..

I don't see what's hard to grasp about the term workrate. If someone has great matches and entertaining in ring skills then that's pretty much it.
Just depends on your taste as to who you think has "it" or not.

Just depends on your taste as to who you think has "it" or not. If you put it that way I guess you can measure "work-rate" it's the ratio of good matches a wrestler has to the number of bad ones... still I don't care as long as I like the wrestler work rate means nothing.

The answer to whatever Cena is a hack worth hating or a good worker, lets compare the present with last year.
Last year, I despised him as a paper-title champion-wearing hack with applause only from MILFs and kids. With the serious push by WWE, his promos and persona was very bland and manufactured, sort of a lame Stone Cold Steve Austin/Rock hybrid-illegitimate clone. It felt as forced as some people's insistence that the government was behind 9/11.
Yet, there was that ECW One Night Stand from last year. The whole crowd of ECW loyalists probably seriously considered murder as an option if Cena *did* win over RVD. Remember the riotious crowd that threw back Cena's shirt back at his face?
Yet, Cena played well with the vicious atmosphere. He played with an outsider stuck in the wrong place. Now you say, so what? Look at when Batista worked that lame title match against the Big Show in the same arena months later. The crowd chants CHANGE THE CHANNEL!, and Batista visibly looks angry and pissed that there are no silly marks to cheer him on.
I still lacked respect for Cena, but I granted him the fact that he played with the crowd atmosphere. But by the next year, he's been given more free reign and freedoms with his promos(like last night) and he's doing much better in his matches.
Now, I think he's a credible champion or at least a good main event personality. His uneasy truce/feud with HBK in the last few weeks was well-played, and I seriously think we will have a good match on sunday. Yet I'm sure the Detroit crowds will cheer on HBK as the sentimental favorite to win the belt one more time.
Thing is, what about the rumors that WWE will pull the trigger and have Cena turn heel on sunday?

Cena has his very good qualities, and unfortunately those qualities don't mix with the way he's booked and portrayed. Plus he's not a very good wrestler.
