One time, I met Karem Abdul-Jabar, and called him Roger Murdoch. He appreciated it.

I haven't read every post so it may have been said. But even when i am working a show with someone i've never met before i introduce myself by my gimmick name. Hell even my family and friends call me by my gimmick name for the most part. It's part of the buisness and showing respect.

Most wrestlers like the name they're given. It'll usually make them more happy if u call them by their wrestling name. Exactly. The same goes for musicians with fake names. You wouldn't call Slash,Saul. Or 50 Cent by his real name. Slash is the man. lol anyways, back to topic: If the internet didn't exist, I think everyone would call Undertaker by the Undertaker or "Dead-Man". It's totally respectful when you call them by there wrestling name. If you walked up to Taker and called him by his real name, I really hope he slaps the taste out of your mouth.

I think the only way you could possibly get away with calling a guy by their non-ring name is to be REALLY good friends with them completely outside the wrestling community. If I'm Colt Cobana's good friend and I have nothing really to do with his wrestling, I'll probably call him Scott until I'm corrected or told otherwise. But aside from that, stick to ring names, it's just respectful.

Yep. I was gonna use that same example. With the exception of maybe a few guys(like Cide usually being called "D"), most wrestlers refer to each other as their ring names, even out of the ring. CM Punk is "Punk", not Phil. Colt Cabana is "Colt", not Scott. Austin Aries is Aries, not Daniel. Christopher Daniels is Chris(or OMD, according to Joe and Punk), not Daniel(his real first name). Arn Anderson is Arn, or Double A, not Marty. I could go on all day, but you get the point. Wouldn't you just look like a retard going up to Double A as a fan & calling him "Marty" Well, you wouldn't look like a retard for long, because you'd probably be dead shortly thereafter. One example of confusing I had was while interviewing Nancy Benoit. I asked her up front, what do I refer to you as in the article, and what should I call you? I mean, I knew her real name, she introduced herself as Nancy, but I still asked.

How about I'll call a wrestler by what ever the f*** name I want, and if they touch me they will be poorer then shit because I'll sue them for everything they are worth. They aren't gods, they are actors.

I look at it on a one-by-one basis. Amy Dumas, for instance, is more than happy to put away "Lita" and be known as Amy Dumas, lead singer of the Luchagores. However, if I called Raven "Scott" or Alex Shelley "Patrick Martin," I'd expect an ass-whoopin. Or at least a severe tongue-lashing.
Call any particular person whatever they wish to be called, simple as that.

It comes down to basic respect for me, rather than treating wrestlers as gods or heroes. I always call people the names they prefer. If a colleague prefers me to call him "Mr Smith," I'll call him Mr Smith; if he prefers John, I'll call him John. Most wrestlers want to be called by their in-ring names, so I would call them that.

I'll put it like this, and this is coming from Raven's whole deal on it, and it's using him as an example: Raven/Scott Levy belongs to the Screen Actors Guild, on his SAG card it does not say "Scott Levy" it says RAVEN.
It's like you wouldn't go up to RANDY SAVAGE and call him "Mr. Poffo." Or you wouldn't call any of the Ramones by anything other than _____ Ramone (Johnny Ramon, Marky Ramon, Dee-dee Ramon, etc). Or you wouldn't call Iggy Pop by anything other than Iggy Pop.
Same reasons. They are the stage names of the people, and you don't call them anything but.
As a wrestler myself I am very annoyed when people I don't know come up as a fan and use my real name. Hell even other wrestlers use my stage name when talking to me. The only people that really use my real name anymore are: 1)my girlfriend 2) my family 3)friends from before I was a wrestler/outside of wrestling 4)bill collectors.
Although Rick Steiner did have some trouble a few months back because he tried to use his stage name in running for an election.

One thing, Ranger, if I bumped into you at a show or something, and knew it was you, I'd probably revert to your screen name, since, well, that's mor familiar, ya know?

Yeah it never hurts to ask if you're unsure. Hell like some people mentioned, just about everyone in the buisness still calls Mick Foley "Cactus" or "Jack." Hell, in his books he made mention that even after he bacame "Mankind" people backstage (like the Undertake) still called him Cactus.

I had a sit down with D'Lo, who was working Mick that night. He was as excited as some of the kids I'd seen running around, kept telling me "I can't wait to wrestle Cactus tonight". I, naturally, asked if we'd get to see the return of Cactus Jack, and he said "Nah, I just always call him that, I can't call him anything else".

On my fiancé's SAG card, it states his stage name as well. I'm one of maybe three people outside of his immediate family that knows his full given name, but out of respect alone, I won't call him that.

ugh for the last time YES you should call them by their ring names. The movie poster of Forrest Gump and the credits in the movie did not list "Forest Gump as Forest Gump", its Tom Hanks. With that said, its Hulk Hogan's name on the program, not Terry Bollea. Really, I dont know why people don't get this concept. Exactly. The ring name is their public name. Calling Raven "Scott Levy" is not the same as calling Forest Gump "Tom Hanks". It's like calling John Wayne "Marion Morrison" (his real name for those too young )

It's a stage name. It is the name they use in public. Where are you when you meet them? You are in public, so you use that name. If you know them in private, you can use the name they use in private, but you do not know them in private.

OK let me spin the question, if I ever met you across the street and I came up to you would you want me to go "hey (your real name)" which you havent told me or call yourself on here or would you want me to go "hey (crapper's name)". Because if anyone outside of my family calls me my real name I smack them.
