So you beat up all your friends? Or do you not have any? I'm kidding, I know what you actually meant. None of them know my real name, I actully got the school to change my real name to "Square Williams" on the registars so that no1 finds out me real name.

Could someone explain to me WHY though. It doesn't make any sense to me since pro wrestlers are basically actors on a television show. Don't think I would call Alfonso on Fresh Prince Carlton Credits don't come up at the end of the show saying Paul Levesque as Triple H etc do they.

Look at it as similar to military rank. You call a Sargeant Sargeant. His name's not Sargeant, but you address him that way because he earned the title. These guys work hard to be what they are. Mark Calloway has spent 10+ years working to make the Undertaker a name to remember. It's the least you can do to call them that if you see them in person. Unless of course they request otherwise. Took the words right out of my mouth. Thief. I wouldn't recommend it, but if you'd like to walk up to Kane and call him "Glen" to his face, be my guest. But realize that wrestlers live their gimmicks and work to make you believe them for a long, long time. While they are indeed actors, they're actors for a matter of years, while Tom Hanks was Forest Gump for a matter of hours. If you call The Undertaker "Mark Calloway" it's insulting. It says, "you haven't done your job as a performer, I don't respect your efforts to make me believe in your character, and all I see you as is an actor who dresses up." Call Hulk Hogan anything other than "Hulk Hogan" and see if you get a response.

Basically, by calling the wrestlers by their stage names it shows respect for the history of the industry. As far as wrestling has come, one thing that wrestlers are taught it's respect for its history... and since the days of believing John Cena is fighting for his life against The Great Khali are over and it's widely accepted as scripted, so much so that the curtain strings have been drawn back to actually show the fans what's going.... there are always going to be people who fear for the access the fans are given.
By calling wrestlers by their personas, it shows that you respect the industry, you respect what they do, and you actually give a crap. The wrestlers themselves generally refer to each other by their ring names unless they are good friends, or at least while they're at the arena.
I guess the phrase to sum up would be "It's a time-honored tradition"

I say call them by the wrestling name, even movies say "Kane" "The Rock" Stone Cold Steve Austin, John Cena
If that's what they want to be called, call them that unless you have known them for years, but just running into someone use their stage name.

I agree that you should call them by their stage name. But I'd like the chance to call the undertaker "Mean Mark Callous".

I guess if you were a woman, you'd call him "Mr. Savage." Then he'd look at you and say "YOU can call me 'Randy' " Congrats to anyone who gets the reference.
I agree that wrestlers should be addressed by their "ring name" for the reasons you guys have already stated. But I've always wondered: what should you do when meeting someone with a one-word name? I believe in courtesy titles as a means of respect, but "Mr. Undertaker" or "Mr. Kane" just sounds weird.
