For supposedly, being one of, if not, the smarkiest of the smark crowds, the audience last night in Madison Square Garden was a little underwhelming in their reactions. Aside from the obvious Cena despise (and admittedly, it seemed as if the Cena fans outnumbered the smarks, a minimal of 60/40 percent), NYC didn't bring the noise for anything they weren't supposed to.
Are NYC-area smarks at shows a dying breed? Discuss...

The crowd wasn't super smarky other than the main event, but at least it was loud; I'd rather have a crowd blindly cheering for the faces than a crowd who is quiet.

I guess what I was trying to get across was I was hoping for more a cynical affair from New York. The crowd was responsive, but they weren't smark-like at all aside from the obvious and aforementioned Cena despise. I think it might be time to hand the throne of Smarkdom over to Toronto or Chicago.

There was very little for them to chant about. You either laugh or boo the comedy bits which made up most of the show. Most of the matches were of the thrown together nature, and didn't feature anyone too horrible (save Snitsky).

I think what the original poster is trying to say is he wanted the crowd to boo Cena. Because they didn't he was disappointed, but that happens.

They did boo Cena. Though there was the usual kids cheering adults booing dynamic. It isn't like in 2005 when the boos were so overwhelming.

I thought the crowd was a little too smarky for my taste, but I'm old school. When I hear anyone cheering for the heel it gets on my nerves. When I hear people cheering for the heel and the heel does nothing to turn the crowd against him, that really gets on my nerves. Randy should have brought it down to a chinlock for the rest of the match to get them pissed, but knowing how things are these days, they probably scripted down to the second how long he could have the heat before Cena got his comeback.

The smarks had to work last night.
Those other times like Wrestlemania, etc., they were off from
the weekend.

I wasn't disappointed that MSG booed Cena, I said that was going to be obvious and expected. They just didn't do anything smark-like last night. I think the closest they got was popping in the opening segment when Vince McMahon and Mr. Kennedy had their little face-to-face.

Edge is my favorite wrestler, kid. But you know what? Edge doesn't want you to cheer him. If folks are cheering him, that means he's not doing his job. If you pay your money, cheer for who you want to. It's a free country. Just realize that if your favorite wrestler is a heel and you cheer for him like a babyface, it's counterproductive to the heel heat he's trying to get.

Thing is, New York has always been smart, but never smarky. Just because it's the Northeast doesn't mean it's Philadelphia. Growing up in an extended suburb of Philly, Philadelphians are just different people. Philly makes people hard; its socio-economic structure produces a distinct synical blue-collardness. They boo when the Phillies win because they should have won by more than a run or get angry at McNabb because he broke his leg. In my experience, you can totally tell personality wise the difference between a New Yorker and a Philadelphian.
Not saying one is better than another, because I've spent extended periods of time in both places and loved both cities, however, New York, especially the more kid friendly MSG-shows, completely lack the edge that ANY show in Philadelphia has.
Anyone else notice this? I'd say it's synical smark in Philadelphia v. a breed of smart fan willing to atleast give the performer a chance to entertain in New York.

Smark crowds seem to be the barometer for the future for some of these guys. Case in point, Wrestlemania 13 in Chicago. That was the night that forced the WWE to reverse Austin and Bret's heel/face status. And also was pretty much the night that the WWE realized they were going to have to repackage Rocky Maivia (even the Rock himself singled out WM13 as the moment they realized they needed to change his gimmick). Obviously, those two maneuvers greatly helped the WWE for the next couple of years.
I don't necessarily think all smark cities like Chicago only boos the faces and cheers the heels, they cheer for who they feel is over. I think the WWE does pay attention to that whether they'll ever admit to it or not.

after their various disappointments became reality (no HHH run-in; the Cody/Charlie match continuing) they accepted their situation, stopped booing, and got into it. Vince must have been proud. Good audience. Woof.

I don't think that the Austin/Hart turn was a result of the smart marks cheering Austin over Hart because Hart's always been a smart mark golden boy. I think that was purely the regular marks saying, "We like this guy!" based on what they saw of his personality on TV, rather than how he was as a worker or anything they read in a sheet. Austin had actually been a smart mark favorite for his entire run as Stunning Steve in WCW.
