Riccaboni and Lancers are spot on with what I was trying to say. The smart New York crowd really had an opportunity to make a difference in sombody's push last night and with Saturday Night's Main Event and failed to make any sort of impact. I believe it's been said on more than one occasion that Vince sees MSG as his pulse on the WWE audience and unfortunately, they really dropped the ball last night.

But you gotta think that the massive pops Austin was getting as he was being helped out of the ring after the 'I Quit' match with Bret at WM13 was something that everyone within the company noticed. Seeing as that I was there, that was easily the biggest pop the crowd gave a wrestler that night. Perhaps, it could have happened in Tulsa or in Salt Lake City as well, but it didn't. There was absolutely NO way they could have had Bret come out the following night on RAW and cut a face promo. He was booed out of that arena.

Another thing. Yeah, the crowd booed Cena a little bit, but are those folks smart marks or casual marks who Cena's clean cut character just doesn't resonate with?

Austin was slowly getting babyface pops more and more ever since KotR 96 and the folks really just didn't take to Bret when he came back after being gone.

Oh I know what you mean. I do recall Austin getting pops. It definitely was developing throughout their feud. I honestly don't recall the commentators acknowledging the face pops he was getting until the night of WM13, but that was such an amazing reaction he got from the crowd that night. It gave me goosebumps. It almost looked like Austin was a little shocked by it. At that moment, it couldn't be ignored anymore. The fans loved Austin.

Actually, after Austin won KOTR in 1996, he didn't get that immeadiate push past and future King of the Ring winners would get. He had to wait out the summer for Bret Hart to decide if he was going to return to the then-WWF. So really, Austin didn't start picking up steam until the fall of 1996 and by the spring of 1997 he was officially the hottest wrestler in the company.

They earned my eternal respect during Goldberg/Brock at WM20.
Last night's "Let's go Cena! CENA SUCKS!" (by 2 parts of the audience) was great.

He was pretty well protected over that period. B.) In large part the program with Bret was always numero uno in the game plan for Austin. C.) The magnitude of his push isn't what was important, it was the way to people took to him.

And getting back to the point of my thread how MSG can play a factor in a wrestler's push, you can definitely pinpoint the moment they were going to make Austin the top babyface of the company. MSG, Fall '97. Austin stuns McMahon. The crowd went nuts and we were on our way to the Attitude era.

MSG really helped Viscera get another try in the WWE.
Remember how he ran in to help Trish during the whole "Trish tortures Lita for getting knocked up" story. He attacks Kane and suddenly the whole crowd busts out with "LET'S GO MABEL!" chants.
I really think that chant has helped V keep his job during cutting seasons.

I thought the crowd was a little too smarky for my taste, but I'm old school. When I hear anyone cheering for the heel it gets on my nerves. When I hear people cheering for the heel and the heel does nothing to turn the crowd against him, that really gets on my nerves. Randy should have brought it down to a chinlock for the rest of the match to get them pissed, but knowing how things are these days, they probably scripted down to the second how long he could have the heat before Cena got his comeback. so we should just cheer for who were told to? wise up - i cheer edge, mr kennedy etc because i am a fan of theirs. if anything your attitude is as bad as those you are badmouthing! I actually agree though, the better way to show respect to heels you like is to boo them, as that's what they're trying to get u to do.

I thought the crowd was very good last night. Cheering the faces, cheering the heels, laughing at the comedy skits...I really thought the let down of not seeing Triple H live would kill the rest of the night, but it really didn't.
By the time SNME started, the crowd looked to be out of it, as they barely popped for the opening credits and fireworks display. Without giving away anything, a certain someone came back at the end which made the place EXPLODE!

all the girls, including these annoying marks i was sitting next to, cheered for Cena. All the guys booed the hell out of him. I just clapped, I'm still a Cena fan but I don't mark out much anymore.

I think the gist of this message isn't registering with some of you. It's not so much that the crowd wasn't responsive to what was being put out there, it's that typically Madison Square Garden crowds are a smarky bunch and last night there seemed to be a lack of that smarkness.
