I'm increasingly not a fan of "WHERE THE BEST WRESTLE!" being trotted out in every other promo, it's very... WWE-like and not in a productive way.

I still think my fave part of the video was Joe just lurking in the background knowing where things were headed.

It did seem like he probably watched how TNA dealt with legends at times and went "I'd like a piece of that" instead of thinking "That's actually really bad in the long run, I want to do things differently". ...Now I kinda want to see a "Low-Effort Legend" gimmick that's somewhere between a pastiche of Main Event Mafia-era TNA and Toru Yano, where it's like a heel where their gimmick is they're a veteran that expects to do the bare minimum for matches but then moans when they're not high enough up the card and doles out patronizing advice to the younger wrestlers as appropriate.

Feeling like tonight might be a good Dynamite for a bingo card or drinking game, just have to figure out what all to put on it. 🤔

Are they that comparable? Punk is seven years older, was already a multiple time WWE champion and had been a main-eventer there for years. He'd also already done a run on the indies. So it's not surprising that he didn't follow Cody's path. He wrote comics, did some acting and fought in the UFC. To varying degrees of success sure, but then he was a guy in his late 30s ticking things off a bucket list. For me at least, it's more of in the sense of where Punk seemingly expected to be when coming back. Granted, I could also see that as Punk having the expectations of the usual WWE modus operandi where the part-time guys coming in on nostalgia runs pretty much have always been put on an impossibly high pedestal and allowed to walk all over the full-timers. Admittedly that also tracks with a lot of Punk's behavior regarding wrestling 'traditions' where it's been less "I want to change this for the betterment of future wrestlers" and more "I want it to be my turn to be the part-timer on a nostalgia run so gimme the belt and let me beat everybody".

Would love to see Hook paired with Shibata, particularly if it means Hook gets to cycle through New Japan in some capacity or at least do a few matches here and there like Mox and Bryan have. I don't know if I'd call it an excursion per say since I think Hook is reasonably past the Young Lion stage (though not necessarily by much) but even just letting him pop in here and there as "Shibata's protégé" would be fun.

Pity that A. we've lost Bob Saget and B. AFV is Disney/ABC not WBC, because this would be a golden opportunity to dub and SFX-up the clip like Saget-era America's Funniest Home Videos.

For every stupid dive that resulted in Sammy Guevara hurting somebody, I feel like there were two more that he did that have just completely been forgotten.

Yeah, who knows, I'm just going by what his dream was, and watching a guy who told the company to f*** itself, built himself up as a star, is still well liked everywhere, came back a bigger star, and is now the center of the company. Honestly, when you think about it, it's a pretty striking contrast to compare what Punk and Cody did in their initial post-WWE careers, and where that took them first in AEW and then now that both of them are back with the 'E. One pretty much entirely reinvented himself and his character and honed it in ROH and New Japan and then perfecting it between AEW and his return to WWE, to the point that dark-haired short trunks Cody just seems weird to look back upon sometimes... the other seemed to think he could accomplish more and then some purely on the notion of "I'm CM Punk, MMA superstar. I had a pipebomb once. Ice cream bars?"

This is by no means intended to imply that anyone in this thread specifically has been concern trolling, but I'll definitely say it's rather tiresome how AEW in particular seems to bring out the concern trolls to a degree that I don't recall ever seeing with TNA, ROH, or NJPW. The quote from SRS (I think it was) about how the folks who make the most noise about "oh no AEW's ratings!" tend to rather transparently not actually want AEW's ratings to do well, was pretty on the nose.

I have a little more trust in AEW to not pull a "the entire show was a single segment" than some other companies at various points in time.

Yeah but it’s like saying: In reference to the post above with the screenshot of the guy saying he wanted the Bucks dead, “makes you wonder how many murderers there are wishing for AEW’s demise” or however he phrased it. It’s really not a huge deal as I get what he was getting at but I just kinda give the side eye to people who lean to that kind of fear-mongering. You probably don't run into lots of murderers day to day on the internet? Racists, though? On the internet? I think it's a fair statement to make, and not fearmongering in the least. Anyone who's talked about AEW online knows there's a subset of AEW hates who bring that precise energy. Hell, look at the anti-Japanese sentiments helped along by Cornette with AEW. It's not obscure. And if this was referring to me, I wasn't even necessarily trying to make it fear mongering so much as just feeling like if you're ringside security you kind of HAVE to take shit like this at face value. Yes, you could argue that fans attacking wrestlers (at least in the US) hasn't really been a thing since the territory era, but I'd also argue that A. the Bucks and Kenny in particular have gotten excessive and rather specific threats even past the usual internet tough guy shouting at celebrities, and B. the last number of years sure seem like they've emboldened folks to act on threats of violence like that, particularly when they're practically encouraged to do so by the personalities they idolize (I'm entirely referring to wrestling personalities in this context), which is hopefully as political as I'll let this get.

I already seen people openly call Tony Khan a "Sand______" on his twitter post. Make you wonder how many people actually hate AEW becauses it isnt run by a white alpha male. I mean, this tracks. I've seen the same sorts of folks get enraged about AEW at least trying to have a more inclusive environment for things like LGBTQ+ and such.

Nah, CM Punk isn't going to wind up like Bret Hart. He's gonna wind up like Jim Cornette. I'd say about a 50/50 split of Cornette with Ole Anderson's sheer bitterness and isolation, with a dash of Tommy Wiseau's "everybody betray me!".

Got this from another place . people like this legit scare me. This was posted after the Bucks were revealed as Sting’s last opponents. Put it in a spoiler because of the language. I legit wonder if AEW's security team has briefings periodically on things like this, since I feel like you almost HAVE to take it seriously. Same for automatically assuming anyone jumping the railing has bad intentions. Also makes me wonder if there's times that they've had to veto the Bucks fighting through the crowd or some such because of stuff like this.

I would honestly pay to see a mean tweets-type greatest hits compilation of all the vitriol and harm-wishing that the Bucks have received over the years.
While I feel like they've gotten it to such a degree that it's just another day for them, I imagine it's still not fun for one's psyche no matter how much you're used to it.
Also kind of curious if there's been any points with deranged fans that they've had to get legal involved, since a lot of tennis racket and Punk simps have been known to dance a very fine line sometimes about what constitutes an actual threat.

It's simple really: WWE: can take potshots at whoever they want because they're the top dog, having Pat and co. poke at AEW and Ospreay and attendance during the week of their biggest show of the year is fun and the move of a very cool company. CM Punk can say whatever he wants to without repercussion. Also business, they really GOOD business therefore even more cool WWE dollar signs bay bee! AEW: should just shut up forever because they're the uncool bad ratings no attendance one, anything they do is a desperate ploy to fix that, any striking back is petty and LOLTNA WCW 2000 bush league WWE lives rent free in their heads. Also doing anything mean towards CM Punk is the worst thing you can do okay? Don't forget it's also all about business dollar signs too. This basically said what I was getting ready to say, better than I was going to say it. There's a certain subset of online wrestling fan who seem like they took the Stand for WWE blurbs 100% seriously and defend the 'E to a level that feels seriously like cult conditioning sometimes.
