The Intercontinental Title used to have some major meaning at one time. Over the course of it's history there have been some great feuds over this belt: Morales/Muraco, Steamboat/Savage, Rude/Warrior, Razor/HBK, Austin/Owen, Austin/Rock, Rock/Shamrock. But in recent years it's basically been a forgotten title. Sure we had Carlito/Benjamin and Hardy/Nitro but do those feuds match up to the others mentioned? Those other feuds were as hot if not hotter than the feud for the world title and the Savage/Steamboat match is still talked about today as one of the greatest matches of all time. Now the IC title is not even contested at Wrestlemania anymore so the question is, is it time to mothball it again?

No,just have more champs who think that the IC Title is the most important thing in the world to them, ala Randy Orton recently.

Not really...
It's just time to book the title as important again.
I think Jeff Hardy's reign has been decent when it came to IC title prestige, at least the IC champion is portrayed as a potential WWE Champion, instead of being just a guy who happens to hold a belt for no real reason.
So, we're still far away from the epic battles for the IC title, but it's been better than, let's say, 2004-05

Putting it on Santino in his first match didn't help matters, I think as a heel he should win it again and talk about how meaningful it is in one of his promos - maybe offer open challenges for it.

At this point, if they scrapped ALL titles, they would not be missed.
And that's a sad thing, because all titles have been booked so badly for years.

I actually think the IC Title is getting a pretty good treatment right now. You've got it on the guy who'll be challenging for the top title soon, after all. Plus, Hardy's had it for a decent amount of time and just got a solid angle/win behind him with HHH. In fact, the clean pin on HHH was huge if you ask me. Besides, just because you can't name a recent feud that matches up with Savage/Steamboat or Austin/Rock for the title, that by no means equals bad treatment, and it certainly doesn't mean you should give up on a title. How many feuds in recent wrestling history of ANY kind can match up with those classic feuds? And there's ALWAYS the potential for improving the title's treatment, which I'd much rather hope for than just give up on it. They did that when HHH beat Kane and combined the titles for a while, and that was faaaaaar more disappointing to me.

The current IC champion just pinned the WWE champion...what more do you want?

i think the reason the ic title looks weak is the current state of the US title. it has become more prestigious lately with mvp hardy and the mvp/ benoit feuds

No, they should do away with ECW and the ECW Title. Then you could have guys like CM Punk, John Morrison, etc. fighting over the I-C title, which would raise its profile.

WWE has three world title, which automatically drops the IC title down a couple notches. If the IC title needs to have more prestige, then they should scrap the World and the ECW belts. I don't see that happening soon and I am glad it won't happen.

That's a good point, but I don't think its a great idea to have the IC champion actively in the World title hunt. It makes the IC belt into an afterthought to some extent. The IC champion needs to focus on defending the IC title and act as thought it is the most important thing in the world to them. Whomever is chasing the IC belt needs to be booked as a contender as well (in other words, no squash-jobbing to Umaga and such)

They did get rid of the IC Title. Spring 2002-spring 2003. And everyone seemed to hate that, so why do it again when we KNOW what the fanbase will think?

At this point, if they scrapped ALL titles, they would not be missed. To you maybe, to the rest of the casual fanbase and hardcore fanbase yes

The "glory days" of the IC title were at a time when that belt was the ONLY singles title regularly contested on television. It got the most attention at a time when you had to buy a ticket to a house show or a a ppv to see a world title match.
It REALLY isn't as easy as people always love to say - "The IC Title should be made to look more important!" The only way to do that is to either get rid of the WWE Title, or don't feature the WWE Title on TV.
It is IMPOSSIBLE to make the IC title as important as it was in the old days because it's not a focus of the shows anymore.

Here's a thought;make the IC Title kinda like the money in the bank.Whoever holds it has a free shot at the WWE title anytime he wants. The could be that he gets only ONE shot at it! If he loses, then it becomes up for grabs. This would at least give the mid-level guys a reason to go for the IC title.
