Recently, over on the ROH board, those fans have been giving the crowds a lot of crap for making Benoit chants at Davey Richards...
Now, when I first read these threads, I thought it was just some stupid fans trying to entertain themselves coming up with these chants out of nowhere.
However, I went to pop in my Race to the Top Night One DVD, and what do I see......DAVEY RICHARDS WEARING A BLACK LEATHER VEST, GENERIC BLUE TIGHTS, SLASHING HIS THROAT WITH HIS THUMB, AND USING A GERMAN WITH A BRIDGE.
Hmmm...I seem to remember a guy who was small, but incredibly built, wore a black leather vest, had generic tights, pulled his thumb across his throat and liked to use a German with a bridge...and I'm not think of Davey Richards...I'm thinking of Chris Benoit (circa WCW days)
So seriously, he's asking for it, so you can't complain when fans chant "Benoit" at him.
Now, maybe there are some tasteless chants, I haven't gone far enough to hear them, but if the don't go far past "Chris Benoit", how can fans complain???

I remember when fans were chanting Benoit at Richards when he did two German Suplexes in a row at MM2. I don't know how, but I think it had a contributing factor to the PAC/Richards match being so awkward.

Well, they thankfully didn't make Night Two of RTTT, but there were a bunch of asses yelling things like "PUT HIM IN A PILLOW CROSSFACE!"
Anyway, he hasn't made the throat gesture since, at least.

They should get kicked out for crap like that. Anyway, tons of people did German Suplexes before Benoit. Generic tights are just that, generic. Vests, the same. And Kane, Taker, Goldberg and more also use Cut Throats. It's like the oldest taunt ever, so it's not really fair to retire it.

It's the whole mockingly Benoit...
Like it's hilarious the best "wrestler" in the last decade happens to be a homicidal maniac.

Yeah, I wasn't aware if any "Pillowcase" jokes went down, but if you're going to dress and somewhat act like early Benoit, you gotta think someone is gonna make inappropriate remarks.
And there is a difference between Kane, Taker, Goldberg throat cuts and the Benoit throat cut that Richards did.

Sorry if I seem rude, but it's just a taunt. It's not like he did it and followed it with a crossface, andwrote "4 Real" on his tights.

Didn't he do a crossface in a match too?

If anything, it looks more like a tribute to me - the way a lot of posters continued to post RIP sigs even after the news came out. As for the Crossface, there were conflicting reports. Some people said it was a Crossface, others said it was merely construed as a Crossface; we'll see when it hits PPV.

I'm fairly certain he hasn't done a Crossface. Human Tornado on the other hand...

I just find it weird that I never saw him do the cut throat and wear the vest until after the Benoit deal happened

From what I've seen of Davey of late, he may be doing some Benoit homages, because, hey; it's clear Davey's influences growing up were Dynamite and Benoit. Not my place to judge how Davey might feel about the whole "situation", just that he's likely doing something for himself.
That said, any homages really haven't been particularly blatant, especially considering that Davey's already known for wrestling the style Dynamite and Benoit helped popularize. It's not like he just changed his style after "you know what" happened.
And the idiots in the crowd should've been smacked. I'm sorry, there's no excuse for hurting an event with disrespectful bull like what they pulled at MM2, which I was at. I'm never one to say "censor things!", and I'm not sure I'd condone kicking the guys out, per se, but it doesn't change that they're jerks.

Yeah some guy was at the last PPV tapigns in chicago spouting off shit all night to Davey about Benoit... saying... well i'm not gonna even put what he was saying because it pisses me off thinking about it. But it was constant when Richards was out there. Then after the age of the fall stuff the briscoes had a shouting match with this guy... the guy just kinda sits down... dejected ... then some funny stuff happened with a buddy of mine going off, but that's a story for anther time... but yeah.. why the hell ruin shit by just talking about things that are not fun or funny or cool at all.. f*** those guys. and if you are those guys... no offene but f*** you

He revels in the cheap heat. THat's the kind of guy he is. I mean he wrestled a match with his ass showing. Literally.

You know who else did all of those? The Dynamite Kid... ...Guess what Richards also wrestles as? DYNAMITE DAVEY GODDAMN RICHARDS! Exactly. ROH fans like to pride themselves as the most mature and well informed of all wrestling fans. It's about time they've acted like it.

I'm serious.
Though Tornado using the crossface to after beating on women is total HEATZ..
I actually like it.
You know...All of a sudden the cross face has become a MURDERWEAPON OMGZ
I just don't see the line between benoit the person and benoit the wrestler, because since i didn't know him personally they were the same guy.
oh one more thing
Davey says "DOn't call me Dynamite" for a reason.
dangit where are all the other PWG guys to really just you know back me up on that.

If it was done for cheap heat, then mission accomplished. If it was done as a tribute, he needs to have someone sit him down and explain why performing a tribute to a murderer who is now as reviled by many people, people who, often enough, revered him might be a bad idea. It's a couple of moves: how important is it for him to do them when he could be offending other people and bringing up memories regarding a person most people in the wrestling world have incredibly mixed and complicated feelings about.

Jesus Christ, you people are seeing s*** that isn't there. He wore a vest - yeah, ok, so do a lot of guys. His tights are bland - uh, they look more like Jericho's tights, but whatever. He does a German Suplex - IT'S A F***ING WRESTLING MOVE! He hasn't done a flying headbutt yet.
He's admitted to it not being about Chris Benoit, and he's been doing this style forever now, before Benoit even died. One of his favorite wrestlers is the Dynamite Kid, who Benoit jakked his style from anyway. GIVE IT UP ALREADY!
