Michigan coach Lloyd Carr retires after 13 season leading Wolverines By LARRY LAGE, AP Sports Writer November 19, 2007
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Lloyd Carr retired Monday after 13 years as Michigan's coach, following a season defined by a startling opening loss to Appalachian State and yet another defeat by Ohio State.
Carr, groomed for the position by Bo Schembechler, coached the Wolverines to 121 wins, five Big Ten titles and a national championship.
"On this week of Thanksgiving no one has more to be thankful for than I do," Carr said at a news conference Monday.
The departure by the 62-year-old Carr opens a job the nation's winningest football program. LSU coach Les Miles seems to be at the top of the list of potential successors. He played for Schembechler at Michigan, where he met his wife and later became an assistant.
Carr said he hopes that whoever comes after him will continue the long tradition at Michigan of winning "with integrity."
"That's what we want to do," he said. "In the big picture the character of this institution will be defined by the way this program is run, and that really is what Michigan is about and what I hope will always be about."
Carr said it will be up to athletic director Bill Martin to decide what role, if any, he will have in choosing the next coach.
Even though Miles appears to be in a great situation leading the top-ranked Tigers in a talent-rich area of the country, the school was concerned enough about him bolting for Michigan that it put a specific clause in his contract to make it an expensive move.
In the "termination by coach" section of his deal, Michigan is the only other school mentioned. It states that Miles will not seek or accept employment as Michigan's coach. If Miles does leave LSU to coach the Wolverines, he must pay LSU $1.25 million.
Other candidates might include Carolina Panthers assistant Mike Trgovac, who played for the Wolverines and joined their coaching staff in 1984 as a graduate assistant; Kirk Ferentz of Iowa, where University of Michigan president Mary Sue Coleman was before coming to Ann Arbor; and NFL coaches Bobby Petrino in Atlanta and Tampa Bay's Jon Gruden.
Carr had a 121-40 record for a .752 winning percentage, seventh among active coaches, behind Florida State's Bobby Bowden and ahead of South Carolina's Steve Spurrier.
Michigan opened the season with a 34-32 loss to Appalachian State in one of college football's biggest upsets, and loss to Oregon immediately followed.
The Wolverines rebounded with eight straight wins and closed the regular season with two more losses -- to Wisconsin and Ohio State. Saturday's 14-3 defeat was the fourth straight loss to the Buckeyes, matching Michigan's longest losing streak in the storied series. Carr was the first coach in school history to lose six times in seven years in the rivalry.
The Jim Tressel-led Buckeyes beat the Wolverines 14-3, Saturday, dropping Carr to 6-7 overall in the matchup that matters most. "Lloyd Carr is one of the true gentlemen of college football," Tressel said Sunday. "His legacy is extraordinary and his leadership in the coaching profession is greatly appreciated. He made a difference in collegiate athletics."
Carr led the Wolverines to the 1997 national championship. He won 77.9 percent of his conference games, trailing the success rate of just two coaches that were in the Big Ten for at least a decade: Michigan's Bo Schembechler and Fielding Yost. Against top-10 teams, Carr was 17-9.
Michigan has lost its last four bowl games, including three Rose Bowls, the longest postseason skid since Schembechler dropped seven straight in the 1970s.
The Wolverines were ranked No. 5 before this season started by voters who thought returning stars on offense would make up for inexperienced players on defense and special teams.
Then came the loss to Appalachian State, making Michigan the first ranked team to lose to a team from the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly Division I-AA. That led to an unprecedented fall out of the poll. The 39-7 loss to Oregon was Michigan's worst at home since 1968.
The Wolverines did rally and had a chance to win the Big Ten title outright and earn a spot in the Rose Bowl in the regular-season finale against Ohio State. With the loss to the Buckeyes, Michigan is likely to end up in the Outback Bowl or the Alamo Bowl.

Carr's resignation is bad news for LSU. Now all they're gonna hear is 'will Les Miles take the job?' which could be a potential distraction for them. First they lose Saban to the NFL and now they might lose Miles to another program. It's odd because LSU could beat the Michigan Wolverines and the Miami Dolphins right now.

If you ever needed evidence of how classy ESPN is, look no further than their coverage of his press conference this morning. They kept going to a split screen of Michigan "highlights." I think they showed him getting gatorade dumped on him once, presumably the national title year. The rest looked like a football follies video, Michigan players fumbling, throwing INTs, ball-carriers getting destroyed by tacklers, and video packages of this season's App State, Oregon, and Ohio State losses. I say all this as someone who doesn't give a crap about Univ. of Michigan football. We all know the last few seasons and this one especially have been disappointing, and there are plenty of screaming debate programs to toss it around in the days and weeks to come. But this was his actual retirement announcement. Is it really necessary to kick a man on his way out the door?

I hope that's just a bad rumor though. Miles has a 1.5 million buy out in his LSU contract and the only school that he listed in the option is Michigan. I am hoping if its not Miles that Peterson gets it. Its sad to see Carr go but, its time. The man did great things for the program and the students but, its been obvious that the on field game has passed him by.

I just say give the job to Defensive Coordinator Ron English. After how well he coached up the D the last two years, I rather he not come back at all.

I don't think Gruden would leave an NFL job, where he's probably paid at the least as well as at most he'll be paid at Michigan. MAYBE if the Bucs fired him, which there were rumors of before the season. But thanks to the Bucs playing in a horrible division, he'll probably make the playoffs. That way he can continue to outright REFUSE to build Tampa a team for the future, and keep rolling the dice with quick-fix, veteran "Rent-a-players". See, it's well-known that Gruden doesn't like to (and by that I mean "can't") develop young talent, therefore he keeps bringing in the Jeff Garcia's and Ike Hilliard's of the world and praying it works out (it is this year kinda, because their division is otherwise brutal). So how would he coach up college players?! ANYWAYS, I think it's funny that LSU is a consistently a top ten team, yet coaches are always rumored to be leaving. First Saban now Miles. So guys are willing to forgo being great at LSU to be mediocre in Michigan and outright suck in the NFL. Wierd. West Virginia's going to make it to the BCS title game. Book it!

By the way, I think it's funny that Cincinatti, after losing a tight game to a top 5 team, is ranked behind two Big East teams they beat.
I know they make for great arguements, but you've got to admit that the rankings are total b.s. most of the time.

I really doubt the Gruden thing is true but, since it was out there I thought I thought I'd mention it. I really don't want him near Michigan. Michigan may not have been great in the last few years but, we still are the winningest program in college football history (D1 or whatever its called now) and a constant threat to win the Big 10 and contend for a National Title. So I hardly think we are mediocre. In a slump? Yes but, not mediocre. Add to that Miles history at UM (played and coached under Bo, was an assistant after Bo left, met his wife her and her being a former Women's basketball assistant) and I don't see why he wouldn't at least be interested in it.

I heard Miles has a clause in his LSU contract that says he can only opt out of it if the Michigan job opens up. So that right there tells you he has some interest.
