It has now been almost 9 hours since I found out the terrible news. Sitting here now, it still hasn't quite sunk in. I can only think back to the days past. How ecstactic I was when John showed up on the boards. The fear when he first announced his cancer. The joy of him saying it was going away. The heartache of it returning.
I can't pretend that I really knew John. I talked with him often on the boards, in e-mail and a few times by phone, but I still feel like he was a friend I always had somewhere far off. He was, by and far, probably the nicest person in this business, and it still numbs me to know that not only has wrestling lost one of its true gentlemen, the world beyond the business has too.
In this day and age, there's a certain expectation to get online and find out another of the brethren has passed on. And yes, with John's situation, I knew deep down it was only a matter of time, depending on how hard John fought. And fight he did. But even with this knowledge, it still was nothing less than a total numbness that I felt as I learned the news.
I wish I knew John better. I wish more people were like John.
The pain is over, John. At least we can take comfort in that. To any and all friends and family of John's, you have every inch of my grief, my sympathy, and my love. You had a truly beautiful human being that touched your lives, and I, as well as the whole of the Wrestlecrap community, am thankful that we shared even the slightest fragment of that. Please know that John was not only appreciated by us, but truly loved like a brother.
Rest in peace, John. You will be truly missed.

It sort of hurts me that I was never on the forums long enough to have had a question answered by the guy, but I had been closely following Mr. Tenta's story ever since making the announcement that he had cancer. I greatly respected him for finding humor in a site like Wrestlecrap, and his ability to laugh at himself was something that I held very highly of him.
I'll be one to admit that, at a younger age, I completely marked out when John made his splash onto 'Damien', back when I had absolutely no clue about the reality of the business backstage. I have faint memories of his run with Typhoon, but I do remember the snakeburgers.
But, as I learned about how egotistical and manipulative the world behind the kayfabe could be, Mr. Tenta stood out far and above as a humble person who loved what he did.
I'll always remember his visits to Wrestlecrap and his ability to take both the good and the bad with a smile.
It's just a shame I've never met the man. I think I would've liked him.

One of the best big-man wrestlers to ever grace a ring, and from everything I've been fortunate to read on here, a heck of a guy. I send my condolences. Quake, you will be missed my many.

I remember one of the first things I did on the forum was ask John about his Tiger/Shark tattoo. John was a truly great guy about it, and I'm confident when I say I think he was a generally wonderful person.
I already bought an Earthquake action figure, and I've set it up on my desk as a tribute.
RIP, John. You will be missed.

This is truly a great lose for the world. His family and friends are in my thoughts and prayers, as I'm sure in everyone else's. John was a very considerate being who took the time out for us, to answer any question we may have had, and even joked around with us, because he greatly cared. The world really needs a lot of others like Mr. John Tenta. He found most of his fame, as a wrestling heel, but outside of those ropes, he was anything but that. thank you Mr. Tenta for all the great memories which you gave millions upon millions of fans around the globe. You'll forever be missed.

The first I ever saw of John was on the local Vancouver tv news. There was a famous sumo wrestler from Japan visiting and actually looking for recruits in Canada. He said, through an interpretor how this one guy stood out above the rest - we saw John in the background. He was a big man, and was flexible - he bent down and easily touched his toes (or maybe it was the floor). He indeed wook up the sumo wrestlers offer to go to Japan.
A couple of years later, he was on the news again as a follow-up story, more of a human interest thing instead of a real news item. He was coming back to Canada. The sumo wrestling was do-able, but he really didn't like the culture and heirarchy involved with it. As a beginner or student, he was expected to do menial tasks for the higher ranked sumo wrestlers that he trained with. Helping bathe other sumo wrestlers and doing their laundry didn't really suit his tastes, so he chose to go back home. He did get something out of the whole experience though - a wife. He concluded the interview with his possible future plans of pro wrestling.
Next I saw of him was on All-Star Wrestling from Vancouver. Then next, a little later, I see him being pointed out of a crowd during a WWF show, being asked to sit on Dino Bravo as Bravo did push-ups. The rest is history.
When I read that headline at Wrestling Observer about a former star passing away, I thought it was the WellDunn guy. When I read John Tenta's name, it was like a big weight coming down - I knew he was fighting cancer, but it still seems so sudden.
Rest in peace John - you will be missed

The first Earthquake match I ever saw was the one where he squashed Greg Valentine in about three minutes at Wrestlemania VII. I thought that guy was impressive.
I hope the WWE or TNA pay tribute to John the next time they can by having one the of their larger athletes use Quake's Tremor finisher to win the match.

He was truly one of the greats and never his day to shine in the day will be induced into the HOF. None of my words can express my sorrow for his family nor just how much of a man he was. RIP Quake.

Thank you John for every minute of entertainment that you ever gave us.
My wife may ever only remember you as an "oddity" but she loves you for it.
I have been paying attention for quite a bit longer.
And I still must just thank you for bringing your most to the table no matter what was asked of you.
So whether you were Golga or 'Quake... We'll love you anyway.
Rest in peace big man, I will never forget you.
