I'd like to see him in a major feud not involving the belt for once and possibly a heel/tweener turn.

Several people here have claimed in the past that this was exactly the case, surprisingly.

I thought this thread was about prolonging Cena's appeal by letting him get into the background for a period before bringing him back up to the top...quote] And in doing so restore credibility to the belt. How when, apparently, half the crowd hates him?

Cena was on the mid card? He is pushed cause of the merchandise he sells/sold. His popularity has peaked and at least half of every crowd boos him. So logically speaking, could he not continue to push merchandise to the women and children while wrestling for the IC title? This could rejuvenate him and get the other half of the crowd on his side. Eh while D-x was on top he was a mid-carder with the WWE title. I also don't think Cena's popularity has peaked at all. The guy who's popularity right now is peaking is Jeff Hardy. I think that's why everyone wants him to win the WWE title around here. But he's the IC champ already. If your post was about making the IC title matter again, it should be directed at Jeff Hardy

Given what I've read and heard about Cena growing up, I would find it hard to believe that his work ethic and drive would we working towards being the second-tier champion of the WWE. That would be like Tiger Woods growing up dreaming to win the John Deere Classic.

How when, apparently, half the crowd hates him? Half a crowd boos, half a crowd cheers. The people get into his match. His title defenses have all been in exciting matches. Oh and the IC belt hasn't meant much since Orton won it and they used it to transition him to the WWE title. them treating it as an afterthought for Jeff Hardy also does nothing for the belt.

Here's my idea, bit long but stay with me (P.S. I know it would never happen)
- Orton pins Trips at Mania, Cena comes in, FU's him. Kennedy's music hits and he (as winner of MITB) runs in, and pins Orton for the title. Cena is pissed as he just handed Kennedy the win, and we move onto Raw
- Cena, Trips and Orton all want a shot at Kennedy, Regal says only Orton really deserves it, Trips and Cena need to do something to boost themselves again. Orton/Kennedy at Backlash (giving WWE a heel/heel feud, and boosting Kennedy more)
- Later that night, Hardy is defending the title against YOUMANGO! and Cena comes down and tries to destroy both. Hardy manages to escape and Cena goes psycho on Umaga.
- Next week Hardy/YOUMANGO! again and this time Trips tries to come down for it, and Cena comes down and goes after all 3, descending into a 4 way brawl. Regal comes out and says this is getting ridiculous, and they are proving nothing so at Backlash it will be Hardy vs. YOUMANGO! vs. Cena vs. Triple H for the Intercontinental title.
- Basically Hardy would retain at Backlash, Cena will attack him afterwards, turning him heel, leading to a Hardy/Cena IC title feud. Hardy will manage to get to main event level, Cena gets a heel turn and him and Hardy both get elevated, and Trips & YOUMANGO! can...I don't know...screw it.
I'd love to see that, but it would never happen, as it involves WWE taking a risk on Kennedy, turning Cena heel and pushing him & Triple H down to upper midcard and pushing Hardy & YOUMANGO! more.
Shame...

Threads like this remind me why it's so funny when smarks think they're the majority.

Here's how I see things. In a way to bring more credibility back to the IC belt this is what they should do:
They should get rid of the "Money in the Bank" matches. I remember when coming up that the IC belt was the next step to the World Title. Just like when Warrior and Hogan wrestled for Title for Title and the IC belt was a big thing. They should just have whoever is holding the IC belt be a garaunteed shot at the World belt. They wrestle, and if the IC champion wins the World Title, the IC title is up for grabs and we can see who is worthy of the title next. That way if a big card wrestler doesn't have the title, then they can wrestle for the IC and they won't have to worry about looking bad going mid card.

i really don't care about whether or not cena's in the main event, because if it aint him, it'll be someone else who's booked exactly like him. while i don't hate cena, it pisses me off the way tha he beats everyone at their own game and more or less is the focal point of the show. personally, i'd rather it be cena in that position, who can make it mildly entertaining, than triple h, who i've never really cared for.
mind you, it would do wonders for the image of the IC belt.

Why need a mid-card belt? Removing it will make the tag-team and world title division a lot more thicker. Plus, creative would force to make better midcard fueds than battling over a life-less belt like the IC title. I'm sorry, but the IC title only made sense in the 80's when Hogan was off making movies. It has no point today.
