Breaking his neck
He came back from the injury, and the fans booed him....WWE listened and turned him heel. It was the best thing that ever happened. He never would've became champion as a face

Edge was a vanilla trapped between heel and face midcarder until it got out on the internet that he stole Matt's gf while he was at home with a knee injury. After that, it help Edge tap into the inner prick that he is, intensify it, and create a character that stands out and you love to hate. Just like Austin, The Rock, and so many others who took a part of their personality and cranked it up, the Matt/Edge/Lita thing allowed Edge to do just that and he has been on a roll ever since.

Mick Foley and John Cena feud.
Mick should be credit for a lot more than he is. He elevated Triple H, arguably The Rock in the I Quit Match, Randy Orton and Edge to another level. They only became the mega-stars they are now after beat him. BANG BANG!
In Edge's case, it was the Cena feud that proof he was that good. Although a lot should be credit to Cena, Edge charisma and Attitude Era behavior put him over like shit. Since 2002 the E' was trying his luck with the guy, and the feud with Cena really step up his game.

Like Khali gives his paycheck to his hometown in India, Edge should give a large portion of his money to Matt Hardy.

Made him how? Hardy cemented him as a heel with nuclear heat and a first class douche, Cena cemented him as a main event player. I suppose they both kind of made him what he is today.

With Edge winning the MITB, IMO WWE already had him planned to win the title at some point. He won it before Matt came back. I think people started taking Edge as a main eventer when he defeated HBK at the Royal Rumble. Then had a great street fight on Raw. The the Taboo Tuesday deal with Edge -Benoit -HBK 3 way match on Raw to get fans vote, Edge won. Stock was rising. STILL NO MATT. Edge just took the ball and ran with it. My question is, If people think the Matt angle made Edge ( Which I think Matt had nothing to do with Edge's rise. But I respect the people's opinion who disagree with that) Why didn't it help Matt? cause Edge went over and Matt was banished to smackdown to do nothing and feud with gregory helms Anyway, TLC made Edge.

Becoming the Rated R Superstar cemented his main event spot.
So yeah, pretty much Matt Hardy. I know he had MITB but he was still in midcard hell feuding with Kane. Then he screwed Lita and the rest is history.
I think if not for all that, he would have lost his MITB challenge whenever it was to be at.

Hardy set things off in to high gear, and the Cena feud cemented him as a main eventer the company can go back to at any time. Hard to believe he's a 4 time champion already. I'm sure barring a very severe career threatening injury again that he'll have as many as 7 or 8 reigns.

I would say his awesome string of matches in 2002 and early 2003 planted the seeds for Edge to be a main eventer, but kind of slowed after he got back from injury. However, anyone that doesn't say the Matt Hardy and Lita incident didn't help Edge become established as a credible heel is kidding themselves.

Honestly, he still hasn't gotten there for me yet. I like him and all, but he still seems to lack something for me to truly think of him as top tier. you'll think differently once you tear your MCL and he sleeps with your girlfriend.

Edge is far from "made".
IF he takes Undertaker's streak at Mania, THAT will be the match that will seal his position.
Otherwise he's still just another upper midcard heel who was given some title reigns to be instrumental in putting the Top Face over. (especially on RAW)

The current heel persona was made before Matt...I can remember him being incredibly over as a heel in late 04 and early 05, before the whole Matt Hardy and Lita thing.
But I started to notice him as a potential main event player when he was feuding with Angle, right after the brand extension in 02.

I see no-one has mentioned his 2002 feud with Kurt Angle. That for me cemented him as a top player. Might just be me though.

I don't necessarily think one angle or match made him. I think his angry heel character that wanted the world title morphed into the Rated R Superstar with Lita was around the time that he started coming into his own. It seemed like it fit him as a character more than the babyface character that he had played on Smack Down prior to his neck injury. The promos Edge started giving as a heel on Raw when he wanted the title were effective and it seemed like a much better character for Edge.
