I'm numb to this stuff at this point. Let them have their remakes. I'll check them out, probably dislike them more times than not, and watch my DVDs of the originals.

Eventually I'll get around to watching any remake that gets made, but it won't ruin the enjoyment I'll get from the original. Still one of the greatest horror movies I've ever seen.

I'll treat this the way I treat most remakes.
Pass.

If it does not have Robert playing Freddy I won't even give it a chance.

If it does not have Robert playing Freddy I won't even give it a chance. Robert said he wants a new person to take on the role. In essance he said "I'm to old for this s***."

It'd be funny if they went the Rob Zombie Halloween route and did 1 hour of origin and 45 minutes of the old story re-done.

Considering this series only produced two good films in my opinion (one of which parodies the brutally shitty others) I don't really see a problem with this. Special effects are much better these days and they could be potentially laying the groundwork for a GOOD series of films.

You don't need to go see the "Nightmare" remake. You can just PM me for my script of my version of Nightmare on Elm Street [shameless plug]
Now that that's out of the way, this also marks approximately the 500th time I've read the "Robert Englund must play Freddy or I riot" argument. HE himself doesn't want to do it anymore - he stated that Freddy vs. Jason was going to be the last he played the role, as it's a very physically demanding part. And the dude's 62. He can't play the role forever. Someday, SOMEBODY else will have to play Freddy, so let's see what somebody else can do.
My choice? Cillian Murphy - he would absolutely nail it.
This is something that I'm very passionate about, so I'll continue although the following will likely not make me a very popular person - I think people look at the first Nightmare movie with rose-colored glasses. I don't want to trash it - I really, really like the movie. But it's far from a perfect film, and hasn't aged well AT ALL. Most notable to me is this theorem of mine - Wes Craven cannot write teenage characters to save his life. All of the teenage stories in the film seem to begin in the middle of something (Rod and Tina's argument that starts with one sentence and ends with another being the best example). In addition, we barely know ANY of the teenage victims when they die, so why care? I think that the absolute BEST thing you can do with a horror movie is build up sympathy for the victim characters - the death scenes than carry a lot more weight. And, IMO, the original Nightmare on Elm Street fails at that.
Thus, I would like to see what somebody else's flair could do with this material.

I'm not sure what else they could do to make this movie different. they just about covered everything in every sequel.
I think if they make Freddy real scary like in the last one it could work. I can also think of a few people that would be awesome in the role as Freddy........Ben Foster anyone?

Cillian Murphy's awesome, but kinda young for the role, if you wanted him to be Freddy.
Liam Neeson would be awesome, but there's essentially a snowball's chance of that.

I would say after watching Dark Knight that Heath Ledger would be perfect but yeah that is just about impossible.

He may look younger, but it's kind of a misconception. Murphy is 32, and Englund was only 36 at the time they shot the original Nightmare. Again, the guy would be absolute dynamite in the role.
