Never played them, probably never will either. I'm sure they'd be a blast with a group of people, but like myself, all my friends are married, and we just don't have the time/opportunity to. If this was 10 years ago, I'm sure we'd be playing every weekend.

I'll say this about Rock Band. I absolutely love it.
I got rock band and started playing drums and currently play really well on expert, being able to 5 star most of the songs. But the cool thing is, this game taught me basic drums. When I started getting good, I started to fool around on my friends set, and a month on two later I have my own set and have started to improve even more.
Its a great game to chill and play with friends.

I adore the franchise but it requires multiplayer support. Get a group of people together and you will have so much fun, works even better with the new full band support on Guitar Hero:World Tour. xxxx Trust me. I've played it with a group of people. It didn't help. It's just not my thing. ya see this is what i respect. you've tried it. and you don't like it. thats fine. but what you did that i really like is that you've tried it... you didn't like it... and you didn't come on and say what kind've morons would play this?? you don't like it... but your not stopping other people from liking it and thats what i like. there are too many people trying to change others minds... i like having a debate over somethings good/bad points but if they're trying to make me like what they like and hate what they hate then it just loses its fun. BTW i've played both Guitar Hero and Rock Band and i find RB easier for guitar mostly but i'd choose it over GH (1, 2, and 3) simply because you can have more people... and it has more DLC (from what i've seen anyways) although i must admit world tour does have some good songs it seems like

I'm not a big fan of it.
It may be as well good fun, if played with some friends [but pretty much ANY game played with friends is fun...] but I just don't get the appeal.
Fine, pretending to be a rockstar and whatnot is cool, but the time/effort required to actually play the game is, from what I've seen, on the "too much" side for my tastes.
Why not picking up a REAL guitar instead [you can get one for about the price of the game+fake guitar combo] and learn to play ACTUAL songs? Sure, you won't quite become a Guitar Hero in a matter of months, but it'll be so much more fun, especially when you're somewhere and there's a guitar to play.

I think I don't like it because when I hang out with friends and we go to someone else's house and they have a Guitar Hero guitar someone asks if they can play it, and then the whole atmosphere turns from everyone hanging out to one person cycling through a bunch of songs that they've probably never heard of, then picking one song, failing it. Then the guy who's house we are at puts it on expert and beats a song and everybody begins to praise him for beating a level on a video game.
If everybody went to my house and was forced to watch me tear up Metal Man's stage on Mega Man 2, they'd probably get mad and say that they didn't come to my house to watch me play video games.

I just played it for the first time tonight. It is pretty fun with a buncha people. I doubt I'd get it and play it by myself, but at a get together, it's quite fun. this is my opinion also.

I honestly hate the opinion of "Getting a real guitar" to enjoy it.
It'd be like telling someone playing Madden to go out and play football because it's better.
Now while some people could benefit from the exercise, it's stupid to tell people that something they like to play isn't cool because it isn't "The real thing."

Now while some people could benefit from the exercise, it's stupid to tell people that something they like to play isn't cool because it isn't "The real thing." See, my point for saying "get a real guitar instead" is based on this very easy assumption: How long does it take to win a Superbowl with Madden 09? A couple of hours, maybe some weeks if you take your time and/or want to win it at the highest difficulty level. How many chances to make it to the real SuperBowl do you have? Or even to make it to a regional minor-league final? The difference between Videogame skills and Real Life skills is huge, in terms of time, effort, practice and talent you need. Now, how many tries/hours of practice on a fake guitar does it take you to "play" a song? How long does it take to learn to play an equally "stripped" version on a real guitar? Unless I've totally mistaken both Guitar Hero and guitar playing, I think the difference is not that huge. So, if I enjoy picking up my pad and pretending to be able to dribble past Cristiano Ronaldo, on my way to scoring the winning goal of a Champions League final, you can't really say "get a ball and do it for real". But if I practice hard on GH [South Park style...] to play Enter Sandman, maaaaybe it could be more rewarding (and useful?) trying to do it on a real guitar.

First of all, you don't have spiffy scrolling notes in real life that tell you what to do with your fingers. Learning to play a real guitar on a GH level takes years. Guitar Hero takes 5 tries. Secondly, what could you possibly get out of playing a real guitar that you don't get out of playing Guitar Hero? The satisfaction of playing an instrument over a video game? I'm sure the vast majority is uncaring. The likelihood of getting into a band and being the next Metallica is about as likely as actually getting on a pro football team. I've seen guys get chicks with Guitar Hero more than a real guitar. THAT is mindblowing. Because chicks can play too. (not that they can't play guitar, but come on)

I've been running around since I was 10 forcing my animal pets to fight each other. My current team consists of a mongoose, a bear, a hawk (I leveled this one up from an egg), a shark (I need one animal to surf with right?), a snapping turtle and a hercules beetle. I had a rat as well, but that ones got to be stored in my PC with my other animals while I'm surfing around the fire islands trying to find a gym. Stupid 6 animal limits. Now if you'll excuse me, there seem to be blocks falling from the sky and if I don't get these things lined up now I'll never get rid of them...

What's so good? I GET TO SING ALONG WITH JIM MORRISON ON "LOVE ME TWO TIMES", THAT'S WHAT!!!! No, seriously, I bought it for my brother and sister for Christmas and it's more fun watching the two of them play it than actually play it (although I do enjoy it myself). It's so awesome watching this little 7 year old girl drum away at some awesome music with her tongue sticking out to the side and then hear her say "Did I do good?" with a big smile on her face. That right there was worth the 200 smackers. Also, I do enjoy singing along with Jim Morrison a lot.

Um, no, the difference is huge. First of all, you don't have spiffy scrolling notes in real life that tell you what to do with your fingers. Tabs? And you learn how to read music and how to find it [by ear as well] on your guitar... 5 tries? At which level? If you don't care or don't get the difference, I won't explain it again, as it'd be a waste of time for the both of us... You don't really "learn" to play a thing on GH... You just learn how to replicate a pattern. Something that won't be useful in any other time/place than in front of a TV screen, with a GH game. A real instrument, on the other hand, can be fun everywhere. Uh uh... playing in an actual band =/= being the next Metallica... Just a random garage band with some friends can be fun and rewarding, even if all you're gonna headline is your high-school/college party Good for them... Maybe I should go around all cocky because I drive a 550 Maranello on rFactor.

Scrolling notes are way easier than tabs. Most people can't read music, they'll have to learn that and take even more time. Accessibility is key here.
Guess I can't speak for everyone, but once I tried expert a few times, it's a breeze.
A real instrument is fun everywhere ... everywhere you can play. I don't think it's smart to be taking guitars everywhere you do. GH on the other hand..
Oh, the pattern thing. That's what kept me from these games until GH 3. The mindlessness is ridiculous. You almost go into a trance just watching these notes go by. Real guitar though ... that's all pattern too, once you get the hang of it. Unless you play some abstract crap nobody has heard of that doesn't have a chorus or verse or anything.
You can't compare a random garage band to a pro football team in these terms. I could start a garage band right now. Can't start a pro football team.
You can go around all cocky when you find a chick that enjoys rFactor with you. I'm almost positive it's a proven fact that 97% of chicks dig Guitar Hero. I threw that in there because, honestly, as I said, it blows my mind. People that don't like video games are into GH.

I am a big fan of both the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games; I have had a blast with Guitar Hero World Tour over Christmas. I usually play guitar or vocals; I do not enjoy the drums too much for some reason. I usually play on medium or hard but on medium I find the balance between challenge and enjoyment for me is just right, On Rock Band I did a tour on vocals on hard difficulty which I got through but I would never do it again on that setting as some of the later tracks got really difficult, I had the sore throat medicine on standby.
The games are great fun and they all have songs that people know well from the offset, other songs that people may know vaguely and then others that you may have never heard. I have found that these games have enhanced my enjoyment of the music I already like while also exposing me to some music I probably overlooked in the past or wasn’t aware of.
Oh yeah, I have to add that the scrolling notes are hypnotic, especially on Guitar Hero. Often after completing a few songs I look away from the TV and posters on my bedroom wall seem like they are floating. I am not alone in this as others who have played the game with me say the same thing. Does this happen to everybody playing these games?

I like Guitar Hero. It's fun.
Just as good as a video game, they show your score, and you try to top that.
I don't play it all the time anymore, but it's a good break from doing nothing but sitting there with a controller.
(By the way, my "mind-cleansing" song when I get frustrated is "Message In A Bottle" by the Police. If I'm not "getting" a song, I go back to that to clear my head of all the complicated tabs and chords on other songs.)
