Personally, I prefer "Learning Facility".

I...wait, what? The word "school" has a negative connotation somehow? In other news, the chair, which many people find both outdated and offensive, will be renamed the "bent-legged sitting device", while the barbaric "restaurant" will be redubbed a "place of enjoyed eating".

Way to go!
Let's strip school of what's left of its authority, and let's turn it into a daycare center for spoiled brats, aged 6 to 18.
That's really SMART!

You know what, I want this approach tried at, say, some underfunded, run down inner city school. Give it some cutesy name like these morons did, and just tape it. I would watch. I think what's worse than the name change itself is the logic that, if the name is changed to something else, and some more touchy-feely, everybody wins, kindergarden philosophy is thrown into the educational system, it will somehow prepare kids for the real world. Then, when they graduate from the "learning environment" with absolutely nothing beyond book learning, and some co-worker stabs them in teh back or they don't immediately get what they want through some immediate gratification employment plan, they will either become total basket cases incapable of functioning, or they will snap and kill someone.

I think I sense a story idea.I know I'll never write it, but it's an idea nonetheless.

Oakland Learning Center for the Family FTW. In all seriousness, what are they going to do next? Call their students members of The Watercliffe Meadow Universe?

This has gotta be the most blatant example of pussy, soft-minded, weak-willed, useless and unnecessary PC bullshit I have ever heard of. f*** off with your euphemistic wankery, it's called a goddamn school and there's nothing wrong with it.

Of course not, they'll be Academic Superstars. There will be no report cards, everyone will receive completion certificates noting their exemplory work, and there will be cake. An academic superstar will only be able to fail if they do not attend learning sessions regularly, but, as attendence will not be monitored so as not to hinder their free spirits, the policy will be impossible to document.

i love stories like these. i don't see why people are getting so pissed off. you're argument is "why change it, it's only a word", but if it's only a word then why does it matter what they call it. if one parent called in and complained because the word "school" was offensive or whatever the hell their point was, then at least you've chilled them out.
political correctness in this form doesn't hurt anybody, but it did make some weirdo feel less offended when taking their kids to sch-i mean learning, which is a positive thing in my book.

It is more then that if you read the article more. There's pretty much no dress code and no doors are locked. That scho..."place of learning" is gonna be wrecked by the end of the year.

yeah, the approach to everything is flat out moronic, but that's not the focus of the story, which was kinda my point. rather than focus on the fact that, you know, they're taking the f***ing locks off the doors, the writers, along with most of the posters in this thread, seem more concerned with what it says on the sign outside the building. most of this "political correctness gone mad!" ranting nowadays lacks perspective, and the idea that maybe, just maybe, there are more important things than whether or not someone's allowed to use the word "blackboard" etc.
