#1.I don't think food service has an image as being full of stupid people, just FAST food service.People who cook ACTUAL food are getting a decent rep on the TV with all the reality cooking shows ect.I'm not dissing fast food, I did that as well, but I do want to clarify the stereotype.
#2.We shouldn't get into that (come in the last 15 minutes)thing again, as I recall a pretty lengthy argument on here about the same and we shouldn't get that goin again.

just be quite and give me my damn fries. What I'm tired of are these self involved idiot food service "workers" when I get up to the counter just look at me like "what?" They don't say a damn work to me and act like I am snorking up their day. You're just a burger jockey. Just give me my damn food and don't forget the napkins again. wow, you can tell the people who have never had to work in food service. I hope you're being sarcastic. no I'm not. I'm tired of these so called "workers" being upset. Really. once you get a REAL job. THEN you can get upset at stuff. Anyone who works at a food service job should REALLY look at what they have done with their lives. You don't like the job? THen find something else. I don't think you can. Anyone who works a so called "Real" job as a food server just failed at life. Now that's just my opinion. Sorry but that's just what I belive!

Glad to see this thread... I had something I wanted to bitch about too! So I work at Coldstone, right? This place is pretty dang popular for it being winter, and we're working short in all areas because out owner doesn't really give a crap about us (he 'forgot' to bring our checks today). He won't let our manager do her job and order the right amount of food supplies we need, so by seven we had run out of A) both chocolates, B) French Vanilla, C) Cake Batter, and D) Lemon Sorbet. Not my fault. We closed at 11, after having 50 customers walk out because we don't have what they want. Who's gonna get the blame? Me, the shift leader. God Damn, I Hate Cold Stone. Same thing happened to me once... when I worked at Boston Market, we once ran out, during the dinner rush, of chicken... and ham... and turkey... and meatloaf. Guess who was working drive-thru. The assistant manager, highest-ranking guy working that night, didn't last much longer. But that was his screw-up for not preparing nearly enough... people just had to wait half an hour for food.

I work as a barista to help pay for college(getting a BFA and a minor). Do I fail at life, sir? And we at least think we live in a communal society, thus every person and their job fits like a cog. Sure, some jobs are placed with more importance than others, but I have a feeling a lot of "important" people would pitch a little bitch fit if all the food service workers up and quit their "unimportant" jobs.

Because everyone's life turns out exactly like they plan it to, man. It ALWAYS works out perfectly. Get a f***ing grip on reality. It's not necessary to insult a bunch of people who do nothing but get insulted by their customers all day long. You have no idea why they have the job they have. And hey, at least they're working.

Yeah... this is why I've passed on fast foods. I used to make six inch hoagies and pizzas at a convenience store (Uni-Mart). I swear, every other night or so I'd get out the hoagie stuff, someone would come in and ask me if they could get them custom made. They were crappy sandwiches were just saran wrapped and shoved in a display for $2 or $3. Then I'd get the nurses yelling at me about the coffee not being fresh. We had a six hour rule for coffee. I didn't start it until 4 in the morning and was out of there by 7. The four am coffee was always gone by 5-5:30 from the steelworkers. How is an hour and a half coffee not fresh? And for all of this... there was a Sheetz convenience store less than a mile away that ALWAYS had two people on duty. They ALWAYS had fresh coffee... and cheaper tobacco prices. Pretty much everyone who worked at our store bought their smokes over there, including my manager who stopped in every day in her uniform. (Well, I usually just broke up the buy 1 get 1 packs, as that was back when you could without any problems) But yeah, service jobs are thankless. Well, I didn't even care about being thanked really, but some people just need to remember they're talking to a fellow human being, not the corporation. To be fair, coffee isn't fresh after 20 minutes at the absolute most. I don't care how hot you manage to keep it. There's a difference between hot and fresh. true. thats why at timmies you always see the time written on the pot.

What is a real job? Being a human resources operative? Making sales calls? Desk jockeys who file reports, with no actual purpose in life other than filing faster than the guy two cubicles over? Most people recognize that a job is a job, the sole purpose of which is to provide a paycheck. People take what jobs are open to them. And for many people, it is damn hard to move out of those low-end jobs. Either you've stayed at one place for a long time for the sake of stability, and are thus seen as someone who didn't previously try to better oneself; or you moved around, trying to move upward, only to find that your upward movement in the industry doesn't mean dick to human resources in another industry because you didn't stay in a crappy job for long. In a time period of high unemployment and many highly-trained staff working below their skill levels, it is hard even for well-educated, articulate workers even to get an interview for a non-service position. And those positions that are available are typically no better paying than the restaurants and shopping centers the applicant is looking to escape. If it weren't for the people who work on their feet, with their hands, for little pay and less respect, there would be no humans to resource, goods and services to sell, or reports to be made. Workers build your houses, produce your food, and make sure you have running water and electricity. Enjoy your day off next Labor Day. Most of the folks who do the actual labor won't be so fortunate.

Another thing. I get tired of people saying my job isn't a real job. I work damn hard for what I make, I always make damned sure that my job is done right and no corners are cut, and I'm constantly trying to better myself. I'm not on government assistance, I don't take handouts, and I never try to say I'm better than anyone else for what I do.
That's what pisses me off about the people in the so called 'real job market'. I'm not any different than you, and you don't get to treat me as such.

Heh, my first job was McDonald's... then I moved, and my second job was McDonald's as well.
I, being a friendly, and typically funny guy, greeted people with "Would you like fries with that?" one night, after 8pm, so it was just random people showing up occasionally (we're cleaning, etc, and just help the stragglers as they come in). People would laugh, and then we'd go on with the actual transaction. One guy decided that yelling and screaming that I was rude to him was the proper response to that. "WHO THE f*** DO YOU THINK YOU ARE ASKING ME IF I WANT FRIES, ALL I WANTED WAS A COKE! I WILL TAKE MY BUSINESS ELSEWHERE!" I replied with "I'm sorry sir" as he stormed out. I laughed it off, but my manager came out and asked why they were yelling. He then laughed it off too, so it was all good.
My favorite McDonald's moments though, are when customers think they are something special. And honestly, the best places do treat everyone as though they are special, but people take it too far. I will ask for nugget sauce without waiting in line, but I wait for the current transaction (ordering, paying, etc) to end, patiently. Some people just jump right in.
After McDonald's, I went to Circuit City for a while. Tons of retail horror stories, too.
Then I went into home computer repair, and even though the customer is paying me $95 an hour to do things, they try to tell me what to do. They try to tell me *I* broke the PC that doesn't boot (which, no offense, I didn't do... I admit it when I screw up, and the couple times it happened, the company took care of the customer).
Then I did home audio/video installation and remote control programming. Yeah, they customer spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on equipment, installation, and programming... yet they treat the people who do all the work like we either don't exist (which is actually preferable sometimes) or like we're some sort of lower life form. Ask them "Do you want this feature on your remote?" as it's 100% programmable and they get upset because you interrupted their daily routine of sitting on the couch. Heh.

A job is a job. The world needs people to work jobs that some may find menial just to keep the world going. I grew up next to a family, the mom worked as a manager at Burger King, dad worked at Home Depot as a regular guy.. got by fine. Theres the lifeblood of society. People willing to work. Hell with anyone whos going to put them down for it. If someone wants to vetch about how much it sucks at their job but they still show up everyday and do a good job and dont expect a pennt from anyone else, more power to them.

I always respect people who work in food service and I try to say "please" and "thank you" as much as possible. I dont even get too upset if they screw up my order because I'm pretty sure if I was in their position I'd be screwing up orders too. Most of the time I just get a cup of coffee and its not too hard to screw that up.

Often they screw up my order, but it's nothing important. They put in one sugar instead of the two I asked for? Sugar is available elsewhere...I can add more. This is what I try to explain to some people, "Aw, sorry Game, I'd have brought you a coffee, but I don't know how you take it." "When in doubt, just get it black. We have cream and sugar here at work."
