I really don't see the problem with WWE protecting John. He's one the most over and marketable guys WWE has ever had, and he'll most likely continue that for years to come. WWE wants to do nothing to jeopordize that. Sure, sometimes they go overboard, but better safe than sorry. Anyone seriously offended by WWE doing this is just looking for something to complain about, IMO. This , Vince is not silly he is going to protect what makes him money, its the same for any star employee of any company...besides cena doesnt seem to have a problem with anything and i think thats what really matters

Fact: John Cena is the most over guy in the company.
Fact: WON just reported that Cena's merch sales in 2008 are the third highest in WWE history behind Stone Cold and Hollywood Hogan. This is after a half year of odd, ass-backwards booking and a half year of injury.
Conclusion: Cena doesn't need any protection...

Maybe, maybe not, but still if WWE wants to confiscate a sign that is derogatory towards their top face, they can do that. It's their show.

If the WWE made a CENA SUCKS shirt it would sell huge and Cena would get a huge % cut.

Yeah, they can. It's legal, nobody's dying from it.
It's just petty and unnecessary.

I understand WWE wanting to protect a guys image but, if it wasn't for the fans speaking and cheering Cena in his rapper days against WWE's wishes, he wouldn't be in the position he is now. It's ass-backwards.
Hell, is it wasn't for the fans booing Rocky Miavia against WWE's plans, he wouldn't have become the Rock. What in the world is wrong with letting fans express themselves as long as it is not in a vulgar or violent fashion? You might actually hit on a huge star again.

They do. They won't even let him admit he's engaged. It's THAT ridiculous. Standard managerial practice for boyband members (as all ex-12 year old girls will remember ). Don't ask, don't tell, and for god's sake, don't get pictured together. It is ridiculous, but the E clearly have in mind that they can successfully pitch Cena at the teenage girl market, and it's not that long since I was one myself: I well remember how odd they can get over their idols having partners who shockingly, aren't them. Therefore, they need to keep any potential/future Mrs Cena very quiet. He makes money hand over fist. It is ridiculous, but... I can't blame them. And this is coming from someone who took down her David Beckham shrine on the day he got engaged to a Spice Girl. And still hates her.

Confiscating a sign because it's disparaging to a wrestler is petty because it stamps out fan participation People should be allowed to cheer and boo who they want. Cheering/Booing fine as that's all the participation they require these days. Writing signs like "Cuck Fena" against their top face that seems to be screaming for attention are just asking to be taken away. It's not the Attitude Era any more where the place is flooded with signs and having all sorts of lewd/crude remarks towards everyone. I don't honestly know why someone would go to the trouble of making such a sign and honestly expecting WWE to not take it away.

I understand why they would want to protect their top face. What I dont understand is the sheer hypocrisy of Vince, going on about how America is the greatest nation on earth yet wont even let the fans implement the first ammendment!

That was so long ago, Cena hasn't been like that in several years. It's not like it's the casual fans doing it, only the smarks so it's not like it's a big problem for WWE to worry about.

What did they show instead of the signs, or did they just blur them out?
I'd be interested to see footage/screencaps of this.

And I'd say Jeff Hardy appeals to teenage girls more but he's allowed to be open about being in a serious relationship. The only thing I'd understand them wanting to keep quiet about it, is if he was gay. Because that would possibly have a serious affect on marketing/sales. As a female fan of Cena I was quite happy to hear he got engaged. I got the feeling WWE was just becoming his entire life, which isn't healthy at all. At least he has something outside of WWE now.

But, it's not like WWE is ignoring that or am I imaging the 2 Cena DVDs out featuring stuff from that era? I know the so called "smarks" you love to mention are not the only ones buying those. Hell, why do they have to be smarks to dislike Cena? Cannot you just not be a fan of someone anymore or am I too smarky for not liking Kofi despite him being a face?

I would like to think you're right about it not making a difference, but I can see why they would err on the side of caution there. (You must have known better-balanced twelve year old girls than me. ) If he was gay, you know and I know that they'd make him parade a woman at every opportunity, cause, y'know, gayz iz rong.

What I dont understand is the sheer hypocrisy of Vince, going on about how America is the greatest nation on earth yet wont even let the fans implement the first ammendment! the first ammendment is meant to make it so people can speak out against an oppresive government. It is NOT meant to allow people to say whatever the hell they want. But I don't want to make this too political.
