If they gave John Wayne an Oscar for "True Gritt," they better give Rourke an Oscar for "The Wrestler."

Question how did he spell his real last name? Was it Polish, Jewish, or Russian. Ramzinski - his character's meant to be Polish.

How about Randy "The Ram" as a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble?

I have a question for those who saw the CZW taping.
My girlfriend is convinced that a good number of the wounds on Mickey Rourke were nothing but prosthetics and makeup. How much did Rourke really take when they taped?

Loved the movie, just about every part of it. One of my favorite scenes was the first time you see the WXW guys backstage going over their matches, because what you hear in the scene is virtually verbatim what goes on in indy locker rooms (hey, I'm not the one exposing anything here). It shows that they didn't mess around when making this film; they worked to make every little part of the wrestling scene as real as possible.
I, too, loved the scene where he makes the long walk from the bathroom to the deli counter with the sound of the crowd chanting his name. Pretty cool effect they did there.
Also, I enjoyed the fact that Blue Meanie made a cameo for about 5 frames. At least, I'm pretty sure it was him.
And yeah, if Sean Penn beats out Rourke for the Oscar I'll be pretty bummed. I don't expect Tomei to get the win, but Rourke damn well better get it. Hollywood loves a comeback story...Sean Penn never left.

How much did Rourke really take when they taped? Sigh. Dude, you don't REALLY think Mickey Rourke was for real pulling out bar wire from his stomach and taking staples to the chest did you?? If that's how it works in the movies, then I need to get me a Flying DeLorean. I didn't know those things actually worked.

I just figured he did at least some, after hearing him talk about all the actual injuries he took during filming. Also, to lighten this post up, I wasn't the only one between my girl and I drooling over Marisa Tomei that afternoon...*Foley thumbs up*

I'm not sure who the stunt double is but I believe he is an actual stunt man who doubles as a wrestler as well. Rourke went to the hospital for MRIs most probably because he is a pretty old dude. I mean he is around 50 years old. I would guess that anyone around that age getting into wrestling isn't going to fair too well health wise with it compared to say someone in their 20s just starting out.

I have to say, the Necro match was the first time I've felt physically nauseous watching anything pro wrestling related. I'm normally pretty sensitive when it comes to violence and bloody stuff and horrible bodily injuries on screen (hell, a couple of years ago I ended up walking out of a Planet Terror showing, because for some reason I started feeling extremely nauseous during the scene at the doctor's office 30 minutes into the film), but somehow I didn't find the Necro Butcher match hard to watch at all. I watched quite a bit of CZW, BJPW, FMW and stuff like that several years ago, though, so I guess I'm used to seeing guys staple dollar bills to their foreheads and get mauled by sharp objects. Strangely enough, the only time I've truly felt nauseous watching wrestling was when I saw that infamous Terry Funk vs. Sabu barbed wire match (which I will never watch again if I can help it).

I saw the movie this evening and loved it. There were maybe five other people in the theater besides me, and they were quiet for the entire movie. Awesome.
I also loved the scene where Randy is walking down the hall to the deli counter and we hear the crowd noise. For some reason, I've always been fascinated by the dark tunnel that leads from backstage to just behind the curtain. That's why I loved when WCW would film Goldberg walking from the dressing room to the gorilla position.
I knew that Ron Killings and some ROH stars were in the movie, but watching the credits I was surprised at how many I recognized who played the indy stars. And seeing the name "Gary Capetta"? Damn, talk about a flashback. Near the beginning, when the booker is going over the match listing for the night, did anyone catch that one of the wrestlers was named "Jim Powers"? I immediately thought of WWF house shows I attended in '93; Powers was usually in the opening match jobbing to someone.
When the DVD comes out, I think it'd be cool if they did featurettes on the promotions that lent themselves to the film. Certainly it would help ROH as it prepares for its debut on HDNet--the more exposure the promotion can get, the better.

Yeah, I'm not a big hardcore wrestling fan, so I'm totally NOT used to watching staple guns used on people. But SPEAKING of that scene, did anyone get a Ric Flair vibe from the whole scene? Old school, popular wrestler trying to fit in with the boys of today by doing extreme, bloody matched to keep up.

I just saw it and I'm really sad now. Don't get me wrong, I loved the film, but man what a downer. I feel bad for the guy.
A couple random thoughts.
*Ernest Miller got fat.
*That had to be one of the coldest movies I've seen in a while. Everytime someone went outside I bundled up in my sweatshirt.
*I damn near screamed "CLAUDIO!" when he appeared on screen.
*The fireman thing was a laugh riot.
*There were a couple hipster douchebags sitting near me who were giggling and acting all snarky when the wrestlers were going over spots. Then Necro Butcher showed up and they shut their mouths real quick. After that they didn't say jack. That made me happy.

Bruce Springsteen's new album is set to go to #1 in the UK, the most popular song on iTunes from it by far is "The Wrestler". Hopefully Radio 1 plays the song if it does go #1.

...I chuckled and whispered CLAUDIO! to myself. Same thing with Bobby Dempsey hanging out in his "Survival of the Fattest" shirt, actually.
