I had a friend who had DVR'd all the shows and put them on DVD and I got the season set. I'm watching them now as I didn't have Sci Fi at the time till like 07. The first show, was kind of a comedy of errors and had alot of issues. But the second and third show, they seemingly fixed all most all the issues, they fixed the lighting, the crowds were more into it, better matches, shorter/better promos, solid booking, they have been seemingly perfect shows so far that I have been watching. Sabu got a really good push, the Dreamer/Show thing made sense, commentary was good, I'm on the 4th show now, which has been meh, its the Show/RVD match which is saving it.
But my question is, where did it all go wrong then? Maybe I just think the shows have been awesome so far so tell me if I guess im in the minority there.
When ECW first started, I didn't see the problems with it that a lot of people did. Granted, it did go downhill quick, but I've still mostly kept with it.
For most of this year, though, it's been my favorite wrestling show on TV, and for damn good reason.
Dreamer is still there... and no its a completely different show.
The show started off with: Kurt Angle, Sabu, Rob Van Dam, Big Show, appearances by John Cena, Edge, Orton,
and they stripped it off anything ECW by getting rid of Taz, Styles, the lowered lighting for the intimate feeling, the extreme rules matches, and they stopped treated it as a big show (no pun intended) and stopped the promotion of it and stopped any appearances of bigger names on the brand.
and the booking went all to shit seemingly and went from getting solid 2.5's to 1.0 immediately seemingly.

I think giving Bobby Lashley the belt over Rob Van Dam was where it went wrong. Nothing against Lashley, but he didn't have the look to him to be ECW, if you get me. He was too WWE-esque, if you get what I'm saying. Big Show was a great champion because he was a legit main eventer. If RVD would have won the belt that night, it would have helped launch ECW in a positive direction, and Bobby Lashley could have been built up in different feuds in ECW.
At the time, Bobby Lashley was just getting started working main events. At the No Mercy pay per view, he was supposed to headline with King Booker, but it got changed last minute (which I disagreed with, but that's me). So, he didn't have that much main event exposure behind him. Not that he couldn't be main event material, but he just wasn't ready. And that started the downfall.
A few things after that started to spell the end. When they got the new set, when Mr. McMahon won the title (maybe if Mr. McMahon had a chosen one on ECW that could be a main eventer, it would have been better), and the final nail in the coffin was the Benoit tragedy, because he was supposed to come on the show to build up the ECW belt back to main event prominence. Then John Morrison won the belt, when he didn't deserve it. And of course, having Morrison lose to Cena two days after that didn't help much. And since then, midcarders and upper midcarders (at the time anyway) have been holding it, with the exception of Kane.
But yeah, the first few weeks were really good. Another bad idea was putting Batista vs Big Show at the Hammerstein Ballroom as the main event. I think they should have did something with Sabu, or put Dreamer & Sandman vs Knox and Test in a hardcore match as the main event, with Heyman getting Dreamer thrown into the barbed wire. I think that would have been a good ending to the show.

How is it anywhere near the same as it was?
i mean the dreamer/show feud
And i agree, they stoped the ECW "pushing" but it still has solid booking, better matchs, and less irrevelance

I still like ECW, but I miss when it was actually treated on equal footing with RAW and SD.
I also miss Extreme Rules matches happening as often as they did back then, so it had some actual justification for being called Extreme Championship Wrestling.
As for the stripping and beer comments, I would rather have tits and booze on my TV screen than Abraham Washington. I doubt I am alone there.

I thought the Sandman segments were gold and I didn't mind Kelly Kelly's Expose. Especially the one where like half her ass crack is showing.
Also, couldn't it have been potentially dangerous to put Kelly kelly right out there to do the Expose on Live TV in her debut?? What if she would have accidentally messed up and did show her tits or something. Im guessing she probably had her nipples covered with tape but still.

Fun Fact of the Day: The Sandman segments were a rip off of the original ECW. Back in the original ECW, Paul Heyman would purposely book something bad on the show, so that 911 would come out and beat the crap out of whatever was bad in the ring.
According to the Sandman from On the Road w/ The Sandman, he was told he was going to be on "special teams" and do run ins like 911 (this was when he was contacted about going to the new ECW). So, for those diehard ECW fans, the Zombie segment was a take off of the original ECW.

I liked the 911 segments, so I enjoyed the Sandman incarnations tremendously. It always amused me when the "hardcore" ECW fans were spitting blood over them.

I don't think it ever went wrong.
I may not like Punk, but without his ECW run, he wouldn't where he is now. Miz, Morrison, Yoshi, Kofi, Mark Henry, Big Show.... ECW has done a LOT for their careers.

I think what the OP is saying, when did ECW stop being "extreme" and start looking like another WWE production (albeit, a good one if you enjoy just good in-ring action with minimal goofiness).
It was a gradual process, but when RVD and Sabu were busted, the writing was on the wall. It's a shame, because it was neat and DIFFERENT, even if it was still kind of WWE-ized.
I'm not saying it's not a good show now, but it has absolutely nothing in common with the original ECW (for better or for worse, your call) besides those 3 letters. And Tommy Dreamer getting beat up all the time.
Keeping Khali. Whatever!

While we're on the topic of new shows that started off promising and later degraded into C-level shows, can we also use this thread to complain about Superstars turning into the new Velocity?
Or can we just say that it was inevitable and move on?

They still get some good name-name matches for the main events
