Yeah, I just read that myself. Amazing how that can still work. I was watching the Hogan DVD and still got excited remembering the builds, and the undercard matches, and it was what I like to call WRESTLING!!!

Give that man a job in creative... he cuts through all the crap, and doesn't go the "why do they insult our intelligence with Eugene/Umaga/whatever" route... wrestling needs to have a formula, and if nigh on 100 years of kayfabed grappling hasn't come up with any solid, unchanging groundrules, then my names Gabe Kaplan.*

I fully agree, but it's not like WWE is going to give a crap And that is why wrestling is dying, at least in the states.

Give that man a job in creative... Um, he kind of had one around 1995/6 time, he wasn't great.

I gotta disagree on some things. While wrestling is what makes a wrester a wrestler, character makes a wrestler a star. Wrestling has gone Hollywood, and wrestling skills isn't the complete importance anymore. Now, we have to have drama, action, comedy, and suspense in the form of storylines and promos. Most of the time, a wrestler gets to the top on his skill, but he stays there on his ability to be beyond a wrestler. If this wasn't true, then the main event would always have a revolving door of people and no one being a stand out.
The problem isn't the whole "Wrestling is getting ignored". it's the filler isn't as entertaining.

So when Cena/Orton finally happens are we all gonna go crazy? Probably not.

He makes some good points, but I still believe that Joe/Angle happened so quickly because TNA wanted a major match to headline them moving to primetime.

formula is fine as long as the fans don't get wise the the formula. how many times did hogan befriend someone just have them stab him in the back and then there was a feud?
instead of booking from a formula, how bout episodic booking. every week add another piece to the story......it work for raven/dreamer.......
most of these schmucks in creative were never on a successful tv show, but they wrote for tv......think about your tv shows.... most successful shows added pieces to a story. The bigest recent ones in drama were prison break, the shield, and heroes, one from a few years ago was friends. I didn't watch half of these shows, but even i know the big plot selling points. how did lost become so big? the sopranos? Deadwood? they all added another piece to the story bit by bit. you cannot just throw the entire story out there in a month. add to it week by week. some storylines can last six months or the year. i think if there was a way for batista to stay healthy for more than 30 seconds at a time then the booker t batista feud didn't have to have batista win the first ppv they meet. it kills booker t. just like edge/ cena. let edge keep the dang belt for a while longer than 2 months, have cena build up the fan base of women and children.
if you have to think of the pay off first and work backwards. how many authors did that and made tons of cash

He makes some good points, especially about Joe/Angle. No way they should have had them face off one month in.

He makes some good points, especially about Joe/Angle. No way they should have had them face off one month in. Again, while I agree with this (would've been better with more buildup and storyline going in), I do understand TNA's reasoning behind not doing that, so I'm not so sure it applies to the argument he's trying to make. The thing is, bookers need to realize that there's a place for complexity in wrestling booking, but it's not meant to be done at the complete and total expense of simplicity. For example, driving a storyline through backstage skits that have to do with, I dunno, a love affair, or some strange thing like that? Negative complexity. Starting an angle, letting it simmer for a bit, adding new players to it logically and eventually turning it all on into a full boil involving more than one person? Positive complexity. I shouldn't be able to watch wrestling and constantly guess what's going to happen, but I should watch it and constantly scratch my head thinking "That made NO sense," either.

What flavors do WWE and TNA put out? Cuz if it tastes like Tropical Punch I'll buy a packet or three.

Great article. Someone send this to all of the WWE writers and Vince Russo. Every Day. For the rest of eternity until they realize that this guy will solve their problems.

I still think Angle/Joe was hot-shotted due to concerns about Angle's health. If you think Angle has only a few matches left in him, you can't do a slow build.

"Pro wrestling should be about getting from Point A to Point B and making a compelling story between the two. Instead, the modern definition of “creativity” is remaking pro wrestling into some strange amalgamation of ego, comedy and randomized and bastardized snippets of wrestling’s long and profitable history."
That last line sums up the current incarnation of not just John Cena, but the WWE precisely.
Bravo.

This why Smackdown is the best show.
Easy to follow fueds, bad guy vs. good guy.
Along with the more complex mic workers.
And in general the best wrestling show put out period.
