Both the IFL and CIF are postponing their seasons due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic. Oakland vs. Iowa will still go on Saturday, but it will be an empty arena game. And the AAL will be business as usual, since nobody has noticed the Charlotte Thunder (formerly Carolina Energy) have yet to even release a schedule.

After the XFL, I’m wondering what will be the long term Implications here. The IFL, despite being probably the biggest indoor league left, still had a lot of small-market teams. They could have a really tough time surviving an extended absence.

Are the Oakland Panthers one of them? They issued a statement just now saying they are committed to next year. But it may be hard to keep momentum going when they have yet to play a single down of football. At least their ownership group includes Marshawn Lynch, who would likely have deeper pockets than most owners.

Plus with Columbus coming in next season, they're gonna want to have an even 14 teams.

I wonder if they'll still be the Albany Empire since the AFL is, well, dead. Or if they decided to go with a different name. I'd say go back to the Albany Firebirds. That'll bring people in the stands. If they're allowed back in by the time next season rolls around.

I'm trying to look into it, but I think there was a copyright issue with the previous owners still having the rights. The city and arena have been pushing to have arena football in some capacity continue. Without an arena team the only full time tenant of the arena is the Siena Saints college basketball team. The arena is a whole other issue that I could to into a diatribe about.

Last I recall, Walter Robb used the team name during the 2009 af2 season. My main concern about the NAL expansion is some of the market choices. Albany is a strong get, but Tampa Bay and Louisville are "wtf?" choices, particularly as those teams come from more questionable semi-pro leagues (which would've included the AAL had it played this season) and Baltimore just does not give a crap about indoor football, whether its due to the substandard arena or other factors (not to mention the Baltimore Lightning are just as amateur as Tampa Bay and Louisville). Frankly, I would've like it if Albany was part of the Indoor Football League's push for a Mid-Atlantic division, but I guess differences in pay structure (the NAL pays players higher, on average) as well as the risk of long distance travel despite the hopes of keeping teams in as geographically isolated as possible may be the motivating reason.

I don't understand the Louisville and Baltimore choices, either. Albany is a strong market for the sport and always has been. I was hoping for them to join the IFL as well. Hopefully things work out.

The NAL quickly realized how aimless the Baltimore group was (who didn't even secure a home venue), and kicked them out of the league, preventing another New York Streets from happening.

Preventing these Mickey Mouse horse shit teams from entering the league are best.

I heard from sources that Cedar Rapids and San Diego could be done in the IFL.

s I heard from sources that Cedar Rapids and San Diego could be done in the IFL. I wouldn't be surprised about either. Cedar Rapids had been on shaky support even after they lost the indoor soccer team to Orlando and San Diego seems like a market the ownership is willing to sacrifice, especially since they announced plans on adding a new, unaffiliated team in the Prescott Valley area.

I was pretty sad the AFL closed up shop at the end of last season.
As for current arena/indoor football leagues, I just want to see good football. Period.

The Oakland Panthers are going dormant for the 2021 season, with an eye towards coming back in 2022. This almost never works out. Sucks since I was ready for a new Bay Area team, and was glad to see the arena would still be used after the Warriors left.

You'd think they would give it a shot in 2021 and they came off as one of the most invested teams in the league.

Some more updates around the leagues: The Quad City Steamwheelers are going dormant for 2021, looking to return in 2022. Tampa and Louisville both had their memberships terminated by the NAL, with sources stating that they couldn't provide a line of credit for the league. And then today, the IFL announced that Louisville will join them for 2021. And that last one is providing one reaction from everyone:

Sioux City Bandits announce new ownershipLongtime owner of the Sioux City Bandits, and mayor of Sioux City, Bob Scott announced that he has sold the Bandits to Northwest Missouri businessman and entrepreneur, J.R. Bond. I never thought I'd see this. I figured Scott would either fold the team, or die before he sold it.
