movies.ign.com/articles/104/1047284p1.htmlPlease, no. Just no. This year's movie was good. Really good. Better than I thought it could be, probably the best it COULD be with a new cast...but there's no need to re-do EVERYTHING.

Is anyone really surprised?
I mean Kahn is effectively the Joker of original Star Trek.
So fan casting time.....Javier Bardem?

This is a brand new timeline, and it is obvious they don't plan on doing a TV series in this timeline, at least not at the moment. So these new movies will be the only way to advance the story for now.

I have no problem with this. Heck, pretty much expected it when I heard how the first movie worked.

Khan was in all of one episode of the TV series, and one movie, and a handfull of books. Whatever universe Abrams is trying to set up would be fine without him.

One episode, one movie sure.
But outside of broad villain species of Romulans or whatever, old school Trek wasn't known for single villains widely known by name. I mean consider Wrath of Kahn happened (unless I'm mistaken) because Kahn was a memorable one-time adversary. And an easy to write revenge angle.
Remake or new, I just want a good movie.
And considering the scriptwriters (who also penned Transformers 2 which also came out this summer), its a 50/50 proposition.

How would this work? Kahn was an adversary after Kirk had been Captain for a while, and then years passed, Kirk became an Admiral, and then Kahn came back. The timeline's all forked.

I think the universe he is making is one where all the major stories still occur, but you never know who'll die and exactly how these now classic stories will be retold.

The timeline's all forked. then its a retooling of "Space Seed." I.e. fugitive from the past awakens, super strength and IQ threatens space peace or whatever usual blockbuster nonsense. Its there to work. Not a guarantee, but it can work.

It's a seperate timeline. That still happened in that time line and the films are based on the new timeline and so they can do things differently with this one.

Asides from the destruction of Alderaan, err I mean Vulcan, the only other major significant change really in continuity was supposedly that crew getting together a few years earlier than they did on TOS. Right? I wonder if in these new Trek pictures, they'll bother with the theme planets. Nazi Planet, Gangster Planet, Roman planet...

Yeah I was about to voice the same complaint, until I realized it was irrelevent...so I'll just say don't do it instead.

I would suggest that those "theme planets" simply existed so the Trek gang could get some cheap use out of already existing set pieces on the Paramount lots, so they simply kept re-using tired plot devices to do so........but that'd make me sound like a cynical douche. Its all good. I love it anyway

Well, aside from killing Spock and retirement/Old Age, Trek films only have five plots 1. Time Travel 2. Moby Dick 3. Stopping the Kennedy Assasination. 4. Alien probe tries to destroy Earth. 5. Klingons.
I mean, they have used Time Travel, thus far. So remaking Moby Dick works as a Film 2. I mean, unless you want another Probe searching for the Whales that created it, or some Klingons causing mischeif, or Zombie Spock making the magic bullet from bearskins and flint tools, I suggest you accept Khan 2.

No, no Klingons. Name one thing that hasn't been explored in a through manner with Klingons? Look, if you are going to reboot Star Trek, please don't do what was already done to death. That's like saying, they should do an episode with the Borg, or explore Bajorian Religious Beliefs.
