I agree. The guy built the program, if he's saying he wants one more year, give him the farewell tour, and use that time to search for a successor. They already have their head coach in waiting Jimbo Fisher.

There are reports surfacing that Notre Dame offered Stoops 24M over 8 years. Which is actually a pay cut. Let me state that those reports have to be false because.....there is no way that Notre Dame would be that dumb.

Exactly....it's gonna take a truckload of cash (something I know ND has) to get him away from OU... Just there is no way I can see Stoops not being at OU honestly....

ESPN Radio just stated that Bobby Bowden will announce his retirement tomorrow, effectively immediately.
While I'm sad (somewhat) to see him go, I think it's about time. The man's friggin' 80 years old. I don't mind people staying in the sport as long as they can (Mark Martin), but seriously? Him and Joe Pa really need to retire before they die on the sideline on national television, warping the minds of both viewers and fans.
As for Charlie Weis' firing, it was inevitable. And now, Notre Dame will look for another coach to lead them to 2 good years, then 3 more bad years before firing him, and the Circle of Life will continue on.
Maybe Notre Dame needs to realize that no matter who they bring in, they will suck after so long because of their high standards of education.
Name me one program that lasted longer than two years near the top with Notre Dame's high standards of education.

The thing is they won't be a big time program as far as titles until they give a coach space to run the program how he sees fit now how the boosters see fit... And I hate that Bowden is retiring....I always wanted to see Bobby beat JoePa's record....

Bear Bryant was pretty close to that happening, dying about a year after he retired. Hopefully, he was given the option of retiring this year or next year. If they didn't give him at least that option, that's bullshit in my opinion. I think him retiring right now means that he's being forced out. To me, that doesn't sit well with me. He made that program what it is (which I admit lately hasn't been that much), so he should at least be given an option.

According to ESPNews, he was given the option of retiring following the bowl game or returning next year with no power and not being brought back after the season.

I get that Florida State has been down for years now (I mean seriously, I love my guys but they lost to UK in a bowl game two years ago. That's not FSU.), but there is no quick fix, and I think the fans more so than not would have wanted one more year to say goodbye. Now it's just ... over.
From all I hear they're supposed to be a legit Top 20 team next season. Why not just give Bobby his farewell year, let him shake the hands and say the goodbyes and get the applause, then hand it off to Jimbo?
Jo Pa was down for years then suddenly Penn State was in national title contention for a portion of last year, and in Big 10 contention for most of this. Football is a lot harder to maintain excellence in than basketball. Teams slip, they come back. I'm not saying Bowden brings them back to Top 5 again in the rest of his career, but I don't think one final year would have done them any harm.

Actually, I thought they were going to force Joe Pa out several years back, and I thought it would have sucked. I'm not a fan of Penn State, but Joe Pa has coached some awesome squads.

Boise State wide receiver Austin Pettis will miss the season finale against New Mexico State due to fracture in his lower leg. Pettis may be able to return for a bowl game.

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops once again had to address rumors that he could be a consideration for the open Notre Dame job. "I fully intend to be at Oklahoma, hopefully, for a good while," Stoops said Monday. "What I'm saying is I'm going to be at Oklahoma next year. I can't be in two places at once."

Just heard about this. This is the kind of decision that tells your a lot about a coach. Does he sit him for the entire game, or go with a far less severe punishment like benching him to start but still letting him play a good portion of the game? If you don't sit him for the entirety of the game, you're sending a terrible message to the rest of your players.

Well, on Sportscenter....it has been announced that Mr. Dunlap has been suspended indefinately and definately will not be playing in the SEC Title game. You had to have known this was going to happen as Coach Meyer is very strict on his players getting into serious trouble. I know since Bobby Bowden just retired, we should not talk bad about him. But trust me when I say that Bobby Bowden would have let the guy play the day after the offense.

GoVolsExtra.com cites a source "familiar with the selection process" as saying that Tennessee will take on Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl to be played on December 31.
