Seth - Let me disarm your relevancy argument. Say you're the #1 undisputed high school football prospect. Every school, I mean every school wants you. Big, small, west east coast, etc. Meyer and Carroll are willing to fist fight in the parking lot for your signature. You could play for any program, at your choosing. Tell me, how high would Notre Dame rank on your list? They wouldn't be top 5 for me 1. Florida - 2 National Championships in 3 years, you're going to be on a nationally televised game damn near every week (only games against teams like FIU won't be televised), the pro factor, and location. 2. USC - The pro factory, you're going to be in a lot of high profile games, a BCS game pretty much all four years, and location 3. Texas - Not a bad pro factory, high profile games, and is near the top of the Big XII almost every year so that means BCS appearances. 4. Oklahoma - Pretty much the same reasons as Texas. 5. Ohio State - BCS almost every year, quite a few nationally televised games, and whether you like them or not they have a good pro factory.

Seth Darkin - But this is WrestleCrap. What you expect?
Jedi-El - I think I totally agree with you there.

#13 Oregon d. Arizona St. 41-21.
If Oregon defeats Arizona (who lost today to Cal) next week, then the winner of the Civil War on Dec. 3 will play Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, because Oregon State beat Stanford.

The Pac-10 Conference has been the best football conference. USC is in fifth place, and yeah, I know this is not their best team, but they still have more talent in their special teams than most programs have in their entire roster.
The Big 12 Conference is the weakest of the BCS conferences. Outside of Texas and Oklahoma....State, there is absolutely nobody playing consistent football this year. Unbelievably disappointing.
The Big East may have TWO teams playing in the BCS if Pitt wins the conference.
I don't even know what to think of TCU's new uniforms. Oh, and those guys are legit.
Florida vs. Alabama is the real national title game. No offense, Longhorns.
Ohio State in the Rose Bowl and USC's loss yesterday put Boise State in a BCS bowl game.
Charlie Weis lost his coaching gig last night. Jon Gruden or Brian Kelly will be receiving phone calls shortly.
Not a good time to be a Maize n' Blue fan. Especially when you see Michigan alum Jim Harbaugh take Stanford from being the cellar dwellers of the PAC-10 to one of the most impressive turnarounds in recent college football history.

Yeah, the Pac 10 went from being a terrible division to gaining back a lot of the credibility. Even though I know my school won't even get to a bowl during my stay here unless we completely overhaul our football program(and even then, I will only be here another 2-3 years, and change takes time), but I am glad that its not the USC show this year. Its great.

So, really since most teams that warrent discussion are awaiting their conference championships.
So, I guess I can get the ball rolling. SEC. Bama or Flordia? The Gators or the Tide?
Both teams have been great, but they've each had close calls(or at least games that should have been blowouts but weren't) against some good teams, and a few mediocre teams(but, one could argue that a #1 or #2 team won't play nearly as hard against mediocre teams). Obviously, both teams are gonna try and bring their 'A Games', but that could be a game that could come down to one play, or, considering the quality of refs this year, especially in the SEC, one call. I honestly see this one going either way pretty legitimately.

I could complain all day about playing for overtime, and then the play calls in overtime, but I'm not going to.
Freshman QB, on the road, for the Big Ten title, and they went toe to toe with Ohio State. Unbelievable effort, and I think in a strange way they proved more in defeat than they did in any victories.
Now then, it appears based on what WHO Radio's Jon Miller was able to find out late last night, that barring anything odd happening with Texas in the Big XII Title game the Fiesta Bowl will take Iowa with a win at home against Minnesota.
So protect the pig, and we'll head to Glendale. Not a bad consolation prize.

TCU is playing about as good as anyone, and has almost no hope for a national championship spot.
How can a sport (college football) so great have the absolute most worthless postseason in any sport? Wait, I take that back. Even the lower divisions of college football are smart enough to have a playoff.

while I agree that the BCS is extremely flawed, a standard playoff system is just as flawed in its own ways, too.
First off, just a standard 32 team playoff bracket adds up to an additional 5 games to a teams schedule. You add teams getting things such as first round byes, and then the season gets longer. 5 extra games sounds great the the dollar and cents guys, but really isn't all that great for the players. If you started the first round of the playoffs the week after the season ended, with no bye weeks during the playoffs, the championship would be around the same time every year, but, like said, that would not give any teams a bye, including before the national championship game. And you factor in when some teams had their bye week in the season, and its possible you could have teams playing for up to 16 weeks straight with no bye week. That's starting to get somewhat barbaric, especially for young men who aren't getting paid(legally).
If you start throwing byes in, even if its just a one week before the Championship game, then the season lasts longer. The great thing about the relationship with the NFL and College Football postseasons is they don't really conflict at all. You start extending the season by a week or two, and now you have a conflict. I as a fan wouldn't want that. If you say move the games to another day in the week(such as Thursday), then you factor in the rest factor that I explained above. The reason why the current BCS Championship game works on a Thursday is because its the first game played by both teams in a month.
Then, you have the number of teams factor. Like I said above, a 32 team standard single-elimination bracket has 5 rounds(or 5 weeks of football if you have them playing more than one game a week that would be insane. Some teams would have played over 10 weeks straight of football, some weeks with more than one games). In 2010, 35 bowl games will be played(meaning 70 teams). A playoff would result 38 teams that normally would get to play in a bowl game now do not get to. That might not sound like the biggest deal, but it is, both for the sake of the players and the sake of the schools. For many players, a post season bowl is the most high profile game of the season. A good performance in a bowl game often can make a huge difference in draft position and whatnot in the NFL, which can determine a players destination, which can effect a lot(both positively and negatively). Many of the late round picks are picked almost soley on bowl play. Its good for the school because they can get anywhere between $300,000 to $17MM dollars, which for some teams is able to keep their athletic programs afloat. Plus, money from ticket sales of bowl games, too. Playing in a bowl game also builds awareness for your program, which helps with recruiting. If the playoff system happened, it would just be the same teams getting recruits repeatedly, even moreso than it is now. If a playoff system had been the standard always, then yes, it may work. But Division 1A(now FBS) Football is dependent on the bowl system. The entire format of the league down to its basis would have to be changed for a playoff to be beneficial to the NCAA as much(or more so) than the bowl system already is.
Sorry for the huge rant(in the middle of an essay writing spree, so concise answers are at a premium) but I really just do not understand the thinking that a playoff system would automatically solve all the problems in college football. If anything, it would make just as many problems.

In the FCS, teams usually play 11 games in the regular season and the top 16 play for the title. Everyone else sits at home for the remainder of the season.
Most FBS teams play 12 regular season games. The more games, the more revenue. It'll be hard to tell Michigan that they can't schedule an extra home game, especially now that the Big Ten is rumored to be considering adding a 13th game to their season. Although scheduling an extra game would bring in revenue, most programs would scoff at having their teams playing potentially 16-17 games a season because of injuries and other mitigating factors. Some people think 14 games is a ridiculous number and that's the max right now.
Secondly, is the bowl system still intact? Remember, no one else outside of the 16 plays beyond the regular season in the FCS. These bowl games pay out thousands to millions of dollars to a university. No program would go for a system where they lose that kind of payout.
Thirdly, how does the pay structure work in the playoff system? Assuming you keep the bowls intact for the non-playoff teams, if you lose in the first round, would you have been better off playing in a bowl game that has a bigger payout?
I think you noticed the trend here is $$$$$$. That's the bottom line. The universities and conferences don't give a s*** if the system is flawed or that the fans don't like it. It's not like enough people will boycott to make a difference.

Its not just the football programs that would suffer. Schools would have to cut entire sports from their athletic programs.

The SWAC plays a championship game during the FCS playoffs. Also, the Bayou Classic between Southern and Grambling is on the weekend of the first round. The SWAC chooses not to participate in the FCS playoffs however. Also for tee longest time, th and thee SWAC and MEAC played the Heritage Classic in the post season. As for bowl payouts, the teams gets $12 million dollars for going to a BCS game, but with the exception of Notre Dame, they have to share that revenue with the rest of the conference. Every team gets equal amount. All the other bowl games pay no more than $2 million and then, revenue sharing takes over. Many teams that go to a bowl last year actually LOSE money because the teams go days in advance and do special events and such. Then the schools charter airplanes for their fans and administration. Some schools actually lose a millions or two going to a bowl game. With a playoff, you get extra sponsors involved and TV. Every game will be on National TV and the bidding for games between networks would be insane. Plus each round, the money involved gets even bigger. Plus, if one or more of the rounds is hosted by the schools themselves, then that's just more money for the teams to make. Each team involved, even if they play one game, could make just as much as a current BCS game.

With Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis seemingly hanging on by a thread, expect some big names to be tossed around the rumor mill. This week the possible candidates include Oklahoma's Bob Stoops and Iowa's Kirk Ferentz. Last week it was Cincinnati's Brian Kelly.
