Quick examples for inspiration
Worst
2005
Minnesotta Vikings: Linebacker Napoleon Harris, 2005 1st & 7th Round Draft Picks. Oakland Raiders: Wide-Receiver Randy Moss
A real loser really for both sides. Raiders were Raiders of course, and in fact made people forget about how rather great Moss could be, in spite of his then-attitude problems. And Vikings with that top pick? They used it on Troy Williamson.
Best
2007
Miami Dolphins: 2007 2nd & 6th Round Picks New England Patriots: Wide-Receiver Wes Welker.
That's right folks. The Fins had Wes F'N Walker*, and let him go. In fact, Welker might just be a key reason for Moss' career resurgence up North. Also so far has tied the Super Bowl game record for receptions, got selected to the Pro Bowl as a reserve, and a few trips to the AP All-Pro Second Team.

Mavericks trade Robert "Tractor" Traylor to Milwaukee for Dirk Nowitzki
The Mets trade Nolan Ryan to the Angels for Jim Fregosi
Falcons trade Brett Favre to Packers for a first round pick
Cubs trade Lou Brock (+ two others) for Ernie Broglio (+ two others). Cardinals get a future hall of famer and 2 word series wins, Cubs get 7 games won out of Broglio.

Roy Williams to Dallas for their 1st, 3rd, and 6th round selections, which ended up being Brandon Pettigrew, Derrick Williams, and Aaron Brown, who have all played a role in the Lions season so far. And then there's Roy Williams, who has had a pretty bad year. I think the Lions got the better end of that deal. ;D

In a trade a thought was NUTS at the time, the braves traded our best pitcher in 1987 for some no name minor league SCRUB who hadn't done JACK.
The pitchers name was John Smoltz.
Also..I missed the *this decade* part.
Still, it's a story I find amusing.

Pittsburgh Pirates trade for Matt Morris. I don't even remember who we went for him, but either way it was too much. Morris was one of the worst starters in the Major Leagues when he was with the Pirates.

Lakers trade Kwame Brown to Memphis for Pau Gasol. 24 hours later, the Lakers become an elite team again.
Oh and The Lakers trading Shaquille O' Neal to Miami for Lamar Odom and Caron Butler. Initially, it looked like a bad trade for Laker fans because they missed the play-offs for the first time in 11 years that upcoming season, and the Heat wound up winning a title in '06. Thank God that transitional phase is over.

NFL BEST Denver trades Clinton Portis to Washington for Champ Bailey and a 2nd-round pick in the 2004 NFL Draft (Tatum Bell) Rarely, if ever, do franchises exchange players for anything other than draft picks. It has worked out well for both teams. Portis has rushed for over 1,000 yards in all but one season in Washington (the one season was an injury-riddled eight-game season in 2006). Bailey is still one of the premier shutdown corners in the league, and he has hung with the best receivers in the NFL since coming to Denver.
WORST Oakland trades Randy Moss to New England for a 4th-round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft (John Bowie) This trade was so ludicrous, that when my roommate told me about it that morning, I called him a liar, and went about my morning routine. It wasn't until I checked NFL.com about an hour later that I found out it was the truth.
MLB BEST Florida trades Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell and Guillermo Mota to Boston for Hanley Ramirez, Anibal Sanchez, Jesus Delgado and Harvey Garcia One of those rare trades that works out absolutely perfectly for both sides. For the life of me, I can't understand this sudden rush of Boston fans who regret this trade. Yes, Ramirez has turned into an All-Star and future MVP, but the Red Sox acquired the best playoff pitcher of his era and a throw-in who turned out to be a World Series MVP.
WORST San Francisco trades Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano and Boof Bonser to Minnesota for A.J. Pierzynski In exchange for one season of Pierzynski (.272, 11 HR, 77 RBI), the Giants gave up a reliever who turned into arguably the best closer in baseball, a phenom who was an absolute wrecking crew until Tommy John surgery curtailed his career and an above-average fourth starter. It's underrated as an absolutely awful trade.
NBA BEST Orlando trades Tracy McGrady, Juwan Howard, Tyronn Lue and Reece Gaines to Houston for Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley and Kelvin Cato For a trade that took literally over a month to orchestrate and finalize, this was about as even as it gets. Some felt that Orlando got a steal, some thought Houston were the clear winners. That's the definition of an even trade, when a winner cannot be chosen. While the players have all decomposed over the past five years, the sheer magnitude of this trade when it occurred cannot be fully encapsulated.
WORST Memphis trades Pau Gasol and a 2nd-round pick in the 2010 NBA Draft to Los Angeles for Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittendon, Aaron McKie, Marc Gasol, a 1st-round pick in the 2008 NBA Draft and a 1st-round pick in the 2010 NBA Draft There is so much controversy behind this trade, it's astounding. Memphis GM and legendary buffoon Chris Wallace said that "it didn't get any better than this" in regards to the deal. Many conspiracy theorists said that this deal was orchestrated behind the scenes to land Gasol in LA. Conspiracy or not, it was an awful, awful, AWFUL trade for the Grizzlies.
NHL BEST Boston trades Sergei Samsonov to Edmonton for Marty Reasoner, Yan Stastny and a 2nd-round pick in the 2006 NHL Draft (Milan Lucic) The Oilers acquired a talented winger who helped in their stunning push to the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals, and the Bruins landed two mediocre players. But what evens the trade out is the selection of Milan Lucic, who has turned into a future captain and superstar. Also, the Oilers had some free cap space after Samsonov's contract expired, and they used it to land Fernando Pisani and Dwayne Roloson.
WORST Ottawa trades Alexei Yashin to New York for Zdeno Chara, Bill Muckalt and a 1st-round pick in the 2001 NHL Draft (Jason Spezza) Not only is the trade remembered as one of the worst in recent memory, the contract that Yashin received in the aftermath of the deal is the cherry on top of this turd sundae. The Isles signed Yashin to a ten-year, $87.5 million deal that they eventually bought out with four years remaining on the contract.

Shaq to the Phoenix Suns. The Suns got a well past his prime Shaq and got rid of Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks. Marcus Banks sucked, Marion was hella unhappy here, and Shaq got better again. Even though Shaq's in Cleveland now, the Suns are one of the best teams in the NBA. However... to be fair, the Suns are great now thanks to this: Raja Bell, Boris Diaw and Sean Singletary to the Bobcats for Jason Richardson and Jared Dudley.

I really must disagree.
I think Shaq really did get good again. Most Suns fans agree with this, and we miss him here.

Knowing Memphis though, he'll probably be flipped to a contender in a few years for say... Brian Scalabrine. I would've put down Pierzynski for Liriano, Nathan and Bonser, but Liriano has been painfully average since the elbow surgery, Bonser has dropped off the map and Nathan has proven to be a great regular season closer while blowing games at a Jose Mesa clip in the postseason.

I really must disagree. I think Shaq really did get good again. Most Suns fans agree with this, and we miss him here. In his only full season with the Suns we didn't make the playoffs. After 3 strong seasons before that, I can't see it as anything other than a failure. As for missing him, having the best record in the West so far this season proves to me that he just didn't fit in with the Suns style of play. But everyone's entitled to their opinion on it.

What about the Rangers dealing A-Rod? In the end, it essentially became 'A-Rod for Brad Wilkerson'.
